Early bird: PET Mini!

Dear Supporters

In this week's early access we look at the Commodore PET Mini. Awww.

3 things to look out for in this video:

1) The voiceover was mostly recorded in the new sound-treated room I mentioned. Best case, it will sound "the same" or "better" to you! (Less digital "ick" from the now-retired echo removal plugin.)

2) This is my first video to feature something I rarely do - a 60 second "integration" from a sponsor. My first instinct was to leave this out of the Supporter early access, but in a funny way I felt I'd be depriving you of some content, as I threw in some fun channel references to the segment and I actually kind of like it as content. I feel like we're all part of the Π―R team, and felt you might also find it interesting to see the segment, as it genuinely helps the channel continue a little bit, just as your kind support does in these somewhat uncertain times. I therefore felt on balance it was nicer to deliver the full video to you so you get the whole package, but do correct me if you'd prefer to have these removed if they happen again.

3) Full disclosure: This is also a rare video where I didn't actually do the build. Shock horror! In fact I was contacted recently by 2 enthusiastic makers of the PET Mini, who happened to be fans of our little channel here, to ask me to feature the build. At the same time YouTube channel "Operation 8-Bit" showed me their build footage of the exact same machine, and weirdly they use the same software and 3D printer as me. So to help support and promote a smaller channel, we arranged for me to remix their footage into the Π―R style as a sort of experiment. Weirdly it took about the same amount of time to make this video as the workflow was quite different compared to my usual process.

The integration and remixed footage are rare things and happened to both come at the same time, but I hope neither detract from the storytelling of this insanely cool little (very little) project. πŸ‘πŸ•Ή

Thank you for your ongoing support, and as always I welcome your feedback.

Very cool! Wheeled one in indeed! Not too light... If you didn't see my ZX Spectrum Next video you can discover my ZX81 connection... πŸ‘πŸ•ΉοΈ

I really enjoyed this episode too. The Commodore PET was my first introduction to microcomputers. The teacher wheeled one into our primary school class, and it was at that moment I knew I wanted to learn more and have a future that involved computers and programming. My first computer ended up being a ZX81, and while not being as impressive as the PET, it got me started on the long road to geek-ville and I’ve never looked back.

The PET was the first computer I programed on and the first I hacked on, trying to fry it with peek and poke commands! Loved this! Thanks!
