Welcome back to The Weekly Wednesday! Today's header image is from the cover of Power Punch II on the NES. I have a few things to say about this game...
Hey, you actually posted on Wednesday this week!
It's true!
Ok so....what's the deal with Power Punch II?
I spent pretty much all day yesterday researching Power Punch II, the supposed sequel to Punch-Out. I've concluded that there is zero evidence this was a sequel to Punch-Out. It was originally titled "Mike Tyson's Intergalactic Power Punch" and developed by Beam Software, based out of Australia.
- Why would Nintendo not develop this?
- Why isn't Punch-Out in the title if it is a sequel?
- Why did early previews of the game not mention Punch-Out or Nintendo at all?
By 1992, Mike Tyson was found guilty of rape and was serving a prison sentence. His name was dropped from the game and became Power Punch II.
I reached out to several people who worked on the game. Still waiting to hear back from a few. One person couldn't recall exactly, but he doesn't remember Nintendo being involved at all.
I'm chalking this up to a case of something people want to believe, but it is not actually true.
New Episode Next Week!
While I am busy working on this Punch-Out episode, we are in the process of converting one of our old Facebook videos into a full episode! The "Sega vs. Nike" video will be updated with more information and released next week. As usual, I should have a preview for you all before it goes live.
