I think it's quite obvious they are still first years, the book is building towards the System and Intersystem SCTs that are, for the first time ever, including first year brackets. The whole reason behind Rei finally accepting Kamiya's offer of sponsorship was because Aria's dad came in and told Rei and the colonel if Firesong didn't win the whole of the first year tournament Rei (and Aria too maybe?) would be transferred out of Galen's to Sol. There's not really a specific antagonist, its Rei and the team fighting against the threat of being broken up and also against Abel in a general sense, especially lately

Book 1 and 2 moved through the semester and were easier to grasp the end goals, but for book 3, I haven’t quite seen an end goal. I mean, are they even still 1st years? How long has passed since Viv has gotten out of the hospital? Who is the enemy here? I understand the book isn’t finish, I just can’t tell if the story is progressing at all. I absolutely love books 1 and 2 and cannot wait to see more fights against other schools. Or possibly some insights into the Archons.

2026-02-10 00:09:37 +0000 UTCI think this book especially, but the series in general have an important theme that ties into these chapters perfectly. Does the end justify the means? Obviously that subjective and the real question is how far are you willing to go to save the human race? Rei and his team should hate Able, but if his team is the best chance they have to at least stop the archons cold then I would say that training session is justified. He will grow from that experience and it is small shit compared to being attacked by S rank projections, I feel like that is a level of torture no military should be ok with. In this case what she did was push him to exhation, America does the same thing for longer periods to our special forces.

So it’s using whatever (or whoever) it can; even Abel and Dent. I think that’s why we see some shifts in their personas. The MIND seems to be trying a variety of different approaches. Valera is the safe protector, and Abel is the hard anvil. Those two may think they are doing what they think is best, but the MIND is the one secretly influencing those decisions. We can now see it’s obviously talking to both of them, and I wouldn’t put it past the MIND to try different things to see what Shido responds best to. It also seems like it likes to play dumb. You can’t tell me the most powerful AI in the world can’t figure out what Abel’s doing. Just guessing here, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we find out Abel was somehow gaslighted into doing this, thinking it was all her idea, when really it was the MIND dropping certain hints at certain times. To me, the MIND is playing everyone like puppets to get the desired result.

But after the entire S-Rank stabbing at sectionals and the torn lung, she is still literally torturing him. But besides that, I think it is interesting how the mind seems to be directly talking to Abel after mentioning to Dent that it is also fed up of her, yet let's her make choices directly against what it wants. Kinda makes me rethink how much influence it actually posesses
