People's Choice #64: Prince

This Week's Theme: Prince

Next Week's Theme: Open (no theme)

Huge shoutout to our Patrons for curating this one! We admit that we were maybe a little hesitant. Prince has always been this larger-than-life figure, and we’d heard about his influence, but we’d never really sat with the music ourselves. Maybe even carried a bit of quiet bias, just not knowing what to expect. But these six tracks? They truly gave us a window into the undeniable talent, versatility, and the feel of Prince. Thanks to all!

6 tracks from 4 Albums.

Songs covered this week, in order:

• Soft and Wet

• I Would Die You U

• When Doves Cry

• Darling Nikki

• Adore

• Diamonds and Pearls

-> People's Choice Spotify Playlist <- (every song we've covered on People's Choice)

If i was your girlfriend another amazing track.

metiba clark

Also I could never take the place of your man. The lyrics are so serious but the beat is uptempo which makes it great. It's beautifully quirky.

Thanks for taking the time to share your impressions, memories, and insights, Tnulb! You da boss! My dad had a Cutless Supreme too, a second-hand rust bucket. (dad)

I’m a HUGE Prince fan. There’s an extended version of “I Would Die for U”…It’s the only version I listen to.

Maria

We see you Erik! Great suggestion, a bit too deep of a dive for People's Choice, but I hope to get around to it someday, and at least more Lupe sometime :)

You guys should react to Bizzy Bone- “Thugz Cry”. He samples the Prince song “When Doves Cry”. https://youtu.be/MqZLvRns_aY?si=Ph9ki5u__SIKSTns

Glad you found some you love, he does have good popular hits, but the lesser known ones are where the real treasures are. After Prince died, my hubby introduced me to a couple of his favorites that didn’t get any radio play and now they are my favorites as well.

Jen M

For Real is a lovely song. 🎶

PC#65 Guys i know ur dad love lirycal rap so do some masters couple sugestions: Aesop Rock - Checkers Eyedea - Now Sadistik - You Dont Know

Adam Unierzyski

As a huge Prince fan, I thoroughly enjoyed the song selections and your honest first reactions. PC#65 - For Real by Amel Larrieux (prior member of Groove Theory, previously covered on the channel)

Kim P

You should do favorite songs by Queen !!

Amanda Scantlebury

Next Theme Idea: Family Acts or Bands Funk

Precious

Thoroughly enjoyed this! I really appreciate your openness. I made a comment last year that Prince’s talent was undeniable but he wasnt a go to artist for me. Some of the Patreons (Jen & Felicia) encouraged me to dive into his deep album cuts which I love. Using the description you guys used, I appreciate how uninhibited he is. Those are the type of artist I have grown really appreciate.

Precious

"Love is to weak to define just what you mean to me!" Adore is 100% the greatest love song written! And I'm a love song girlie!!

Kenysha

Great playlist. I was not paying attention at all and didn't realize Prince was the theme this week. Y'all picked two of my favorites. Diamonds and Pearls and Adore!!! Y'all should watch the video for Diamonds and Pearls. Actually, all of his videos. Prince's catalog is massive and he is so versatile.

Shaquea White

Rip Prince. Genius artist. “Darling Nikki” is one of my favs. I love “The Purple Rain” soundtrack.

Simira

My suggestion for PC65: Proud Mary by Ike and Tina Turner I’m guessing dad knows that one. OR Emotional Rollercoaster by Vivian Greene

Jen M

So glad you guys finally covered Prince!!! Yay!!! 🎉 Diamonds and Pearls was a good song, but it didn’t blow me away. Adore though? That’s one song that gets better every time you listen to it. My husband and I think it’s the best love song ever made…especially if you listen to the lyrics. Whoever he was singing to, he really, really loved her! I’m glad and relieved that you got to experience a taste of what us fans love about Prince! Happy you enjoyed his music and thank you!! 😊

Jen M

PC 65: Phyllis Hyman "Somewhere In My Lifetime" Very similar to Karen Carpenter in the fact that she had a beautiful, beautiful voice; yet she suffered from depression and poor self-image and unfortunately took her own life in 1995.

Caeldo

I Would Die 4 U is actually about Jesus. Prince was a VERY spiritual person. I believe each one of his albums has at least one song with some sort of spirituality to it.

Caeldo

PC #65 Lupe Fiasco - Animal Pharm(video by TimesNuRoman pls :D)

ERIK

Some songs I would suggest would be. I'm Yours, Crazy You, Just as long as We're Together, Bambi, Delirious, Sign O' The Times, Paisley Park, Alphabet Street, I Wish U Heaven... the list goes on and on

Christian Prince

Thanks for the reaction guys! Prince was like a household name in my home growing up, ironically my last name is Prince. I think some full album listens will do him more justice. His first album, and every album that he put out almost one year after each other up until like 92 are all classic albums and he even had great songs on his albums from then up until his death. Just an all around great artist.

Christian Prince

All five members of Bone Thugs-Harmony reunited for their street single “Aww shit”. Would like to see your reaction https://open.spotify.com/track/1DfEdMRMdPOIMKiFwAHTrz?si=KTmx1QqQSyOJfQa4Wm9wKg

I'll check that track out this evening over a cold one. (dad)

PC 65 Charles Hamilton - I'm Good (Bret Hart) It's a rap song with a guitar solo and he named it Darling Nikki even though it's pink. It's a Hello Kitty Fender.

ficy

I think I just didn't particularly like falsettos or really airy/breathy singing voices. Some are ok like Eddie Kendricks' and El Debarge's. Maybe it's because they have naturally higher registers, but I also don't really like it when Mariah Carey or Chloe x Halley go that high when signing. Pop Life is still my favorite Prince song so far.

ficy

Babyface has two brothers (one older and one younger) that were in an R&B group in the late 80s/90s called After 7. Their most popular song “Ready or Not” is a classic! It would be awesome if you guys could check it out - Babyface co-produced it

That was fantastic! Thanks goodfellas. 🤘

So glad you covered the songs you did. It was a wide array of his range. Kai, you said something I was thinking throughout my watch when you said Prince was timeless. The thing about him, to me, that makes him phenomenal is that he was a musical catalyst. So, I feel, the reason why certain eras of music, like the 80s has that "80s sound" is that artists were influencing each other and that made for a "sound" that can be distinguishable because there are similarities. There's always a turning point in eras of music that creates a shift in that sound. When an artist almost single handedly changes the sound of that era, ushering in a change. Like you said, Ye is in shambles BUT he's a good example in hip hop. There was a particular "sound" at the time and he was the catalyst for creative change which shifted that era of rap at the time. That birthed the sounds of artists like Chance or Cudi and other producers that changed that eras sound. Prince was that but his influence was bigger. He was a true artist and did not seem restrained to a musical "era" or "sound" or even genre. He just did PRINCE. Almost a genre of his own. He was one of a kind and always was. To me, that's rare. Like how he created music in the 80s that didn't sound like, '80s music". Wow. Also, for me Prince made so many "I remember where I was when I heard" songs. I can remember sitting in the back seat as my dad drive down Pontiac St. In his Cutlass Supreme playing "Darling Nikki" and me (a young kid at the time) thinking "WOW this music is so cool" (my critiques weren't as in depth then). Or, me listening to the radio in my basement/bedroom hearing "Diamonds and Pearls" for the first time. Dad, don't beat yourself up too bad about not getting the greatness in the first listen of "Diamonds and Pearls I think that sometimes when an artist creates something that breaks the framework of a conventional sound, judging on one listen can be to one's detriment. Personally, some of my most favorite songs, I didn't love immediately. My ears and mind had to adjust in order for me to appreciate what the artist was doing. Again, I appreciate the review! Well done! I'm so glad that you heard the greatness of "Darling Nikki" too Kai. I realize it was a risky pick BUT I absolutely love what he was doing sonically and vocally on that track. No rules. A genre bending track. When I suggested it, I thought, they Love Karti... They've GOT to at least appreciate something like this (not comparing the two BUT I see the musical boundaries that Karti is willing to push and Prince also pushed boundaries with his sound). Prince is and always will be one of the most influential and creative musical artists of all time. One more thing: https://youtu.be/6SFNW5F8K9Y?si=JmsXcEwZpbuMw32h

Tnulb

This was perfect. As a huge Prince fan it's nice to see someone listen and appreciate what he does.

Great range of songs. I enjoying watching your reactions!💜

PC#65 Another Sad Love Song - Toni Braxton (produced by Babyface) This is the first song on her debut album.

Stella

❤️ Awesome song selection! For PC 65, I suggest "Distance" by Yebba.

Brenda T.

PS: U GOTTA WATCH THE MOVIE! Each of those songs from it expresses how he felt at the time.. he was goin thru shit with a girl n she made him mad n was embarrassing her with Darling Nikki but it was like a long, completely amazing concert film so he performed almost everything on stage! And YES Kai the live performance was MIND blowing!!!!!

Felicia Wiggins

I actually don't like the song Purple Rain, either🤷🏽‍♀️. I just don't get it's appeal.

Earlona Weary

I'm almost scared to watch!! The song choices are PERFECT considering the vast catalog to choose from!! I didn't make a recommendation last week bcuz i couldn't choose just ONE but ur doing the ones I've advocated for in the past n I'm literally about to wet my pants in excitement 🤣🤣 (I'm the one that told u I saw Purple Rain 13x in the movies ALONE LOL!) I'll be back after....

PC#65: Lucy Pearl - Dance Tonight
