Early Access: STORMWEAVER 3 - Chapter 9 [ROUGH]

Decided to keep the convo in. Unsure of this ending, so we'll see about how this fits in with the next chapter, which is when I think things are really gonna start moving!

*********

A few rules & reminders:

THE REDDIT THREAD

Comments

Sounds too dues ex machina for how he writes. Would be cool though.

Nikola Vadim

Yeah, you’re right, I love the emotions but it would be a good point for a jump in time. Though I’ll hold any serious criticism for later drafts when it’s clear how the story flows with the rest of the book. And reading multiple versions of the chapter like they get released now might make it seem more exhausting than it would be if the entire book was out.

Linn G

Masterclass on expositional emotive writing. I will be honest with you, I was half expecting shido to prompt rei with 'link restoration' healing ability the second he touched viv haha. That would have been sick to see, everyone's reactions in the room as Rei's CAD heals viv and she wakes up.

Nick Holden

It's a lil jarring that book 1 covered about 7 months and book 2 and 15% (roughly) of 3 have covered 5 weeks thus far. Not knocking the storytelling at all. Love it. But I'll be glad when we start getting chapters starting with "2 weeks later..."

Brandon King

The first part of the chapter is the next day but when they are visiting her it is the day after the contact reveal. I think it’s probably been about 36 hours when they see her. I do agree it’s too early for her to wake up.

Dell

Thank you all for your replies. It's been suggested that we move this over to Reddit to continue the discussion. Unfortunately, I do not have a Reddit account so if someone wants to copy my initial post, and continue the discussion there, please feel free. Toodles!

Shakara

It's fine but it's too slow. It's been 9 chapters inside of what, a day or two? The story telling is way too decompressed.

dark phoenix99

I agree with Samantha's analysis above. However i want to add one thing. I think the original post makes a mistake 'Rei taking a chance on his family'. He is not in my view takiung a chance on his family. We know what his thoughts are on his family because Bryce has given us that information. he merely is desperate for options to keep together the first team of supportive people who have been around him ion his life so far.

Gwydion

Awesome chapter! Made me choke up a couple of times. Love how you've humanized Liam Gross, he acts like a hard ass but here you see he really cares about his students. Keep up the great work.

Cynthia L.Lara

It is depressing but Bryce does an excellent job of showing that. It's a good sign when an author's words can make the reader feel what the characters are going through.

Samantha Sandlin

It hasn't even been one day yet. Viv's training accident was literally the night prior to the day they are now on. This conversation is happening ~ 12 hours after her accident. ETA- the conversation was the evening after Viv's accident. The visit to the hospital was ~ 36 hours after her accident (my bad).

Samantha Sandlin

Rei always seems to take the hard road and is very self-sacrificing. Both Aria and Viv have commented before that he pushes himself too hard and is willing to do whatever it takes. The impression I came away with is that Aria is upset that once again Rei did something that could potential hurt him (even if emotionally rather than physically) and he did it for the sake of the rest of the team. And he did it without their input. I think her anger is more frustration because this time he is potentially opening himself to hurt for her and the others and not just doing it because he really wants to meet his family.

Samantha Sandlin

It’s only been a couple weeks since he and Aria had their talk about Rei’s attitude and thoughts about his importance to the team. I also felt that she felt hurt that he didn’t talk to her about it. If he’d talked to her and then made the same decisions she would be less likely to be upset. Rei made a decision for the whole team without talking to any of them. Every Catcher is a little distant. They’ll all forget about it when they meet their instructors.

chris kizziah

I was hoping that Shido would wake her up. I know that would be unrealistic since it’s only been a couple days but…

chris kizziah

Fantastic chapter, keep them coming!

Linda Thompson

I love your writing and this story so much!!!! Keep up the amazing work!!!!

Wilsonkrom .

Hopefully, this situation will conclude soon. Not that every piece of the story should be sunshine and rainbows and given how long this book is probably gonna be there should definitely be time for these emotions, but them being all broken apart right now is so depressing to read about. I just want to see how they rise to the challenge they have been faced with by Central. And I finally need that family reunion to happen, like, right now.

Linn G

That last line. Ouch 🥲

Genevieve Dickinson

Nice wrap — I am drowning, let’s move on. I like the challenges, fights and the CAD growths. I like happy results and relationships. Let’s have more tear things up, less tear jerk drama. Keep it 90/10. Let’s go!

Lyn Shirley

Feels like you're back... Good lookin' out for us.

Michael Wuestenberg

I love the strong the emotions of anger and sadness and love are all interacting here. Well done!

Freedcats

Love the additions to this chapter. I hope Viv wakes up soon. Everybody seems so sad, even her type instructor.

Dell

Hey guys.. Bryce did a great job on this draft of the chapter.. let’s take this to Reddit.. thanks

Heather Herren

I'm so ready for the kayima meeting, hopefully next chapter.

Jacob Clemens

LOL! I had missed that one. I concur, The Logan can just get over his name change...

Other

Yeah, I want to put her in a corner like the brat she's acting like, if she was a real person.....lol

Joanne Hans

Yeah, the not knowing hasn’t been changed yet

Iron Akela

Hmm, lines are still there about three of them being the only ones to know about the offer which is incorrect. Logan and Chancery knew there had been an offer but were never told who was offering and what the details were since they were new to the team and not exactly fully trusted yet. Easy to forget this has all been within such a short time frame relatively speaking. Curious how long Viv is gonna be like this along with aspects like recovery time and other restrictions. In spite of it, time isn't gonna stop for her and Firesong needs to be getting ready.

Voror

Another absolute BANGER

YangThePolarBear

Aria gives a number of reasons: Galens and uncle Rama would cover for us, you signed a contract for the squad without telling the squad, you’re letting your family have an in… but the strongest of these was, you took it all on yourself AGAIN (after promising previously to consult with Aria). Which for Aria probably reminds her of her mom always dictating Aria’s direction. This and probably she figured out when he did it felt like a betrayal deserving her anger (and probably some reduction of trust for a bit).

gratch42

Dammit Viv wakeup so we can kill you! Great chapter extension. Don’t forget to clean up the earlier part of the chapter - given everyone knew in book2 that Rei had a sponsorship though Logan/Chancery didn’t know about the family part. Favorite typo: “the Logan”. Change approved! Logan should always be The Logan. 😝

gratch42

Great expansion on the previous iteration. Love the dynamics of the team without Viv. Shows the strain of the team. They aren't able to just bounce back from everything like it didn't happen

Cal

Another thought to go with this. Central jerked her around as part of testing Rei, taking control away from her (someone whom always had it taken away because of her mother). Then her father shows up, to jerk control away from her again. That threatens her friends and relationships. Then REI does something, again, which takes control and agency away from her. It might just be an emotional fight-back response to losing control, especially from a place she didn't expect it. Things are being done to her, without her consent, and Rei just made himself part of that. I'd sure react poorly!

Ridayah Ahnkhuatra

I’ve been similarly confused here. There are a few reasons for Aria to be mad at him, making decisions on behalf of the group alone, making the choice without talking it over with someone, or not trusting Galen’s to solve the issue. All have varying levels of justification but makes sense. However it seems like Aria is upset that he’s taking the deal at all. Not at the situation that forced its necessity, but at Rei for making it, even after conceding there really weren’t other options. Also appears that Catcher agrees with her to an extent. Maybe I’m missing something in the subtext, maybe Aria needed to be mad so she could forgive him when the contract gets Viv medical treatment, or maybe the author has more plans coming down the road. I’m generally enjoying the book so far and trust the author so we’ll see where this goes.

Jack

@Heather Except, those are not the reasons Aria actually gave for being upset. Additionally, his rationale was something she couldn't argue against, and she didn't disagree with it. Her sole, albeit strong opinion, pertained to his family, of which at this point she knows nothing about, and neither does he.

Shakara

And having finished ,beautiful expression of emotion. Aria's pretty cheesed but I think this will give her the reability to think about it. I wonder if this also means Kamiya will come in and use some secret tools of THEIRS to help Viv along, especially if asked. That could be something they do that might endear them to Aria. I also wonder if they'll all meet Hiroto, and see what Jasper's like. Gonna be INTERESTING!

Ridayah Ahnkhuatra

By my understanding of relationships, which I will admit can be flawed, it definitely isn't rational behaviour. That being said, emotions are not rational, especially in teenagers which are the main cast here. So I can understand their anger to some degree, even if I don't necessarily agree or understand with why. I suppose being angry at Rei for arbitrarily sponsoring the team might also be part of it, especially given their apparent lack of desire to forgive their Sponsor's treatment of their friend. I do agree if Rei wants to reconnect with his family that should be a matter for him though.

Bryn Thomas

Awesome chapter

Heather Herren

It’s not just about Rei. He made a huge decision for 6 people without discussing it with them. The decision could be life altering. The stress on them is astronomical then add aria’s issues with people not letting her chose her own fate.. huge, expected backlash.

Heather Herren

I'd suggest you post this on the Reddit thread Bryce linked to in his post, as that is the place for concerns / complaints. You'll likely get some reasoned feedback or discussion about your concerns.

Craig Bentsen

I guess to simply answer? They are still children even if they're technically adults, with only Chancery being a year older.

Sugoi

That "Explain! Explain Rei!" came through in my head in a Dalek voice, not gonna lie! Now to read the rest of it.

Ridayah Ahnkhuatra

I usually avoid posting comments on any platform, but I feel compelled to express this. I'm feeling perplexed and frustrated by Aria's attitude. It's becoming a common theme in recent novels for characters to display anger towards another character's decision. I can understand being upset if it's about the "lone wolf" aspect, but that doesn't seem to be the case here. Aria appears to be more upset because Rei chose to take a chance on his "Family," emphasizing "his." This doesn't strike me as a supportive attitude, nor is it endearing. Demonstrating love shouldn't entail 1) making the decision solely about oneself and one's emotions, and 2) treating Rei like a child by disregarding his reasons for wanting to do it simply because of disagreement. I didn't understand it when Viv reacted similarly the first time she found out either. It's not one's concern unless the person makes it so. If Rei isn't bothered and it's a reasoned decision, why is Aria so bothered? I'm sorry, but this just doesn't sit right with me. Could someone please help me understand why this type of response is considered acceptable? I genuinely can't grasp it, and it comes off as extremely childish and self-centered.

Shakara

Oh man, this chapter had me tearing up. Great job Bryce! This is some of the most raw emotion shown so far, and I am here for it!
