Added 2024-02-17 00:05:36 +0000 UTCSorry all! I thought I had this scheduled for 9am, but I fucked up and made it 9pm instead! Only realized when I noticed I hadn't gotten any comment notifications.
This chapter is weird, sorry! I swear it wasn't my intention to write this section, but it popped into my head and refused to get out. I wanted to insert some action earlier in the book, and while this is Chapter 7 right now, it might end up being the Prologue, with parents getting pushed to a later chapter for something. We'll have to see!
Good news is I have a chunk of the followup to Chapter 6 done, so i'm really going to try to get you guys that now-Chapter 8 to you guys by next Friday! Cheers all!

Huh. When I looked up “Names of chess pieces in order of strength” google gave me King, Queen, Bishop, Knight, Rook, Pawn. Which is what I always thought it was, but I’m not much of a chess player so…

Then comes Knight, then Bishop, and finally Pawn right? How come Rook, Knight, and Bishop are in reverse order of the strength of the chess pieces?

They're going to have to be pulled into a very specialized regimen to be able to win all categories of intersystems... Kamiya doesn't yet know the extent of the training the entire team will need ...but they are already pulling out all the stops. It won't be a big leap to assume Rei might develop all CAD types... So it's a great strategy on kamiyas part

2024-02-19 23:01:56 +0000 UTCI am guessing it refers to Rei (previously Christened the "Iron Prince" by the ISCM forums) unlocking the Phalanx mode of his Type Shift, or possibly that he has Aria and her Shield watching his back. I am not sure why that should mean anything to Serena, but she seemed to be more focused on the fact that it was related to Rei than the Shield part. So that probably is just the link between them, Serena von Bor being one of the most famous Phalanx Users. Who knows... maybe an old friend or flame of Kamiya Hiroto? But the context for that relationship is lacking so might just be me looking for connections where there are none.

Bear in mind that he is a 3rd Year cadet, while the two teams in this chapter are in the ISCM, so they have at least 1 year on him and probably more. Lasher is A8, iirc, which would be higher than any any of Emmaline's Bannerfall team, and on par with the members of Blackmaw with the exception of the S-ranked User.

I wonder how much someone like The Lasher would stand out in this bunch. Is he a big Fish, or a Big Fish just for his pond? It'll be interesting to see what first years would be like. How powerful are the cream of the crop even at their level?

Especially since Guest says that there is more they can offer him and Aria to improve the team before their new challenge.

Dent definitely has the credentials and a Duelist background..plus her prior knowledge could add much to the Training team. I think she would consider this since she knows literally everything is at stake..

2024-02-19 06:55:38 +0000 UTCI think it will probably be set up so that the entire team are permanently on-campus, especially with the commitment that Rama Guest has made to keep Firesong together and at Galens. That would be the most efficient approach. Originally, with the "Sponsor Rei" setup and with Type Shift having a Saber mode, it would probably have been geared toward teaching him the Brawler and Saber Types that he can use, and teaching him some strategies for combatting other Types. Now that it is shown to be unlocking the other Types for him to gain as well, as well as that he has shoe-horned the rest of Firesong into the sponsorship, having an S-ranked instructor for each Type means that everyone gets some good 1 on 1 time with the best the ISCM has to offer.

Will they have to leave campus every week to meet in Castalon for training? Will it be all trainers each time they meet, or will it be a different once each time? Will they all be staying nearby (on Castalon) to make training easier or will they be coming and going? So many things to look forward to.

Anyone with solid intel is going to want to train a guy guaranteed to hit King if not beyond.

I really liked the granddaughter’s reaction to her Grammy’s change in posture, attitude and intensity. But the #1 dessert for me was my husband’s grin and glee after the grandmother’s final reply to Jasper.

Then, a page or two in, I wondered if I was reading the right book before I recognized the von Bor name. After listening to grandmother break down the fight, I was thinking how much fun it would be to see Aria as her student. When the phone rang, I knew who it would be,but the line “the Prince has a shield” gave me chills. Loved the chapter and can’t wait for the next.

Can see where you might not be sure yet where to put it. Could easily fit before the book, as a continuation of jaspers recruiting that ended book 2. But could also go well sometime soon after the great reveal from Rei.

So, if that is true and unless Emmaline is fighting at night, then this would be at least the day after Rei agreed to the contract with Jasper. Thus, having this as a prologue would then mean going back in time to deal with all the Viv stuff that happens after this. This also helps prove that Jasper has some connections within Central because how else would she know that Rei has a phalanx mode now since it hasn't been announced yet?

Robert Jordan notoriously used to have long prologues with multiple POVs (usually where he set up/introduced secondary characters) Never detracted from the work and allowed us to get our main character fix for the majority of the book start.. It’s always good seeing someone like ‘Grammy’ turn back into the bad arse warrior they were, and a ROOK!?! Holy crap, the whole team will be fanboy/fangirling all over Serena when she tips up at Galens. She’s a legend that they’ve studied, and she’s on the arena underworks walls, and while she may be old she clearly isn’t past it! I’m so stoked to see this!!! Personally, I think the parents work great as the prologue, and while I can totally see this coming after the next chapter - it would make a great follow on to Logan and Rei sparring (and the reveal of Shido’s new hotness), part of me thinks this would be a great palate cleanser part way through the chapters we’ve seen already. Some of those are hardcore and full of feels, so throwing this in there could work well. Looking forward to the next chapter!

Possibly taking over as Firesong's manager, and having an element of the political intrigue that she mentions in the face to face meeting with Rei. Doesn't hurt that she is pretty much my ideal woman either... so much so that I might be abandoning Team Viv for Team Jasper :) But it certainly looks like Jas is putting together the coaching dream team that will put Firesong through hell, to get them where they need to go!

2024-02-17 01:21:50 +0000 UTCI really enjoyed todays chapter The higher ranked battle was fun, I can already see the use of such an interesting ability for some of team Firesong (especially a user unique version of it aswell) One of my favorite things is seeing characters shift from the softer side they show loved ones to the cold war hardened soldiers and warriors they were forged into, so seeing that with Von Bor gave me chills. Absolutely enjoyed every word of that. ESPECIALLY the code phrasing of the Prince and Shield. I agree the parents are perfect for the prologue. Honestly I like how the story has flowed thus far. I think it would be placed better after the combat session between Grant and Rei, along with everyone else’s reaction to the upgraded armor. I think after that scene is over if we shifted into Jasper building the specialized trainers would be awesome. Coming right from the Book 2 cliffhanger I would want to get straight into that nights events and aftermath before reading this backstory no matter how much I enjoyed it. So definitely after the events and aftermath for me.
