Comments

Sounds like me might have to cover that album at some point! - dad

The FrontRoom

The 3 albums are amazing but Voodoo is in my top 5 albums of all times. I am in love with that album.

Kamanda Hickey

Wow, how could that be anything but awesome. Thanks for bringing it to our attention. (dad)

The FrontRoom

Shit, Damn, M'fer is one of my faves from this album. I love the eeriness of it for the reasons you both described. He asks the questions as if he's in disbelief that he's actually seeing what he sees between his wife and friend. Then he dissociates during the act of murder. It almost makes it relatable because he's not raging. So creepy but so good! I haven't heard many songs that insight that kind of feeling.

Alexis Mitchell

D'Angelo and Lauren Hill have a song together that you would love call "Nothing Even Matters. "

Laticia Rhim-Davis

I got this album when it was first released and I still listen to it this day love this album. Great reaction guys.Miracles and blessings to you and yours ✌️ 💜 🙏.

Laticia Rhim-Davis

It's pronounced Dee-Angelo. Thanks for the review

Alanna

Saw this post and had to subscribe

Alanna

I think most of the artists we loved in the 90s grew up in church. Both of D'Angelo's parents were preachers so the influence is HEAVY!!

Lady LaReux

This is one of my favs!! In my opinion, his best of the 3 albums recorded. I used to fire up the 'wacky tabacky' & listen to music around this time in the 90s 💨 SN: "Lady" the older song was written by Lionel Ritchie and sung by Kenny Rogers

Lady LaReux

Please react to Eric Benét

Melaar

Thanks for the recommendation, Tina. Kai actually picked up an original copy of the Chocolate City album not that long ago!

The FrontRoom

Can you react to some Maxwell and Raheem DeVaughn?

Carla Davis

Yes, the original is amazing

jeff baker

You know that's a remake right?

Carla Davis

Yep! The whole thing! All of it! Including hidden tracks!

Tina Ellis

"Chocolate City"!! Please! Please! Please! It gives the essence of what they are all about and why they exist. Also "Up for the Down Stroke" and "Give Up the Funk". But pretty much everyone who knows them knows "Flashlight".

Tina Ellis

“Lady” is a perfect song. Kind of surprising your pops didn’t really feel it

Marco

Maxwell “urban hang suite” album next please!!

Marco

Please react to “Musiq soulchild”. His song called “love” is nice. He’s a important artist in neo soul music. In my opinion his the best male neo soul artist.

Sammy

Yes! I came here to say this. Definitely gotta speak about the Soulquarian movement. It definitely was a “something’s in the water” kind of energy.

The Afro Buddha

1996 High School High Soundtrack

jeff baker

Noted. We absolutely positively have to do A Tribe Called Quest. Never heard them but they’ve been requested as much as anyone. - Dad

The FrontRoom

I’ve never heard Parliament and I don't think Kai has either but we both know they are important to the history of music and have had an influence on rap as far as samplings go. We’re thinking of maybe doing a dual reaction to an entire Parliament LP at some point but not sure which one. Any suggestions?

The FrontRoom

Thank you for joining, Jeff!

The FrontRoom

I’d love to hear the two of them together. Sounds like a match made in heaven. - Dad

The FrontRoom

I always thought Shit, Damn, MF was inspired by the OJ Simpson Case, I think the trial happened the same year as Brown Sugar was released.

Amber Nicole

Yes!! Please do Mary Go Round

Amber Nicole

Also...Erykah and D'angelo had a song together called "your precious love". Beautiful

jeff baker

I've been with you guys since the beginning but I'm new to the Patreon. I'm glad I joined, D is one of my all time favorites

jeff baker

I don't know if you've checked out The Parliament, but "When we Get By" samples they're hit song "One Nation Under A Groove".

Early W.

A Tribe Called Quest included the name & the man into their"Midnight Marauders" album which made the name & the man a "household name". Kai & Dad, A Tribe Called Quest- "Midnight Marauders" reaction, PLEASE!🙏

KAZBAAH

Anything from "The Soulquarians" collective: (Erykah Badu, D'Angelo, The Roots, Common, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, J-Dilla, Q-Tip, Bilal) is monumental! I just wish that they would have created an album while they were all on fire & in high demand. It would have been so epic!!😞

KAZBAAH

I haven’t heard it but Kai knows it really well and pretty sure it’s one of his favourite albums. It is definitely a must-do, and sooner than later! - Dad

The FrontRoom

We did our first live maybe a year ago. Definitiely time to consider another one :) - Dad

The FrontRoom

Have y'all already listened to The Miseducation of Lauren Hill yet? Lauren Hill and D'Angelo have a song together called Nothing Even Matters that's really good.

Shaquea White

I love your platform, I'll definitely join a live once the audience convinces you guys to let us join the conversation!

Amethyst Simone

The outros on early 90s r&b albums will send you to church every time its always giving Take me to the King

Amethyst Simone

Thank you for your insight, Amethyst. - Dad

The FrontRoom

Raphael Saadiq is an absolute musical lesson requirement, a prerequisite for a lot of the top songs in R&B. You guys gotta do producer appreciation, babyface, Dallas Austin, Brian Cox, Raphael Saadiq,

Amethyst Simone

There's a lot of missing context in regard to the timeframe of the album debut and culturally how we moved in the community that primarily support this genre; the early 90s needed the peace and exploration of neo-soul cause we're surviving the crack epidemic as discussed in the Rap albums that came at the same time. D'Angelo gave us what we needed

Amethyst Simone

Please, please do Musiq Soulchild. Aijuswanaseing is a great first album and fits beautifully in the Neo-soul genre. And make sure India.Arie is coming up ❤️❤️❤️

Amethyst Simone

His talent is authentic and worth the wait

Amethyst Simone

This used to be in heavy rotation at the crib when it first came out. I still have the CD, lol. Glad y'all enjoyed (Dee-Angelo). Check out Angie Stone's Mahogany Soul album too. She's linked to D'Angelo artistically and personally.

Tawanda

The way you guys pronounce D'Angelo has me rolling 🤣

Amanda B

Been waiting for this one!!! Prince inspired D’Angelo and Stevie inspired Prince!! All amazing multi-instrumentalists!!! Prince played all instruments on his first five albums.
