EXCLUSIVE: Mary J. Blige - Real Love | Poll Winner Reaction!

Comments

Real Love is not “simple” and definitely not “super simple”. Maybe the sentiment is simple, but the beat/instrumentation lyrics and her vocals are not at all simple. If you’re expecting it to be a super complex never heard anything like it meta Stevie Wonder or Prince composition, then I guess it’s “simple”.

This entire album is still as hard and as fabulous as it was when it came out.

Imo Mary's voice express a lot of feelings the more you listen to her music.

Laticia Rhim-Davis

Great recommendation for a MJB track where she raps - Family Affair (2001). First song I heard from her growing up, makes you just wanna dance

Mind Garden

I think the layered background vocals are giving a 70's R&B Motown vibe.

Amanda B

Y'all should do Method Man & Mary - I'll be there for you

Amanda B

Your def should do "Going Down" by Mary J. Also, you should check out Envogue, Faith Evans, Deborah Cox and Monica. Just some really great female R&B vocalists from the 90's.

Rene Afon

Very well put. Her vocals definitely improved over time, but the soul and feeling was the thing that really mattered to us from the beginning to now.

Tina Ellis

Mary's vocals only improved over time. Some people still criticize her for her vocals. For many of us, it wasn't the point. She sang our stories. She sang our pain and love. Her evolution was ours. Her rawness was real. She was us. My all-time favorite. All hail Queen Mary!!!! ❤️

Ez Dlittle

The Pointer Sister, Chaka Khan, Phylis Hyman are definitely inspirations for MJB

I was born in '88 Mary is the blueprint; my heart shudders for every album. A little black girl giving soul. Please explore her track with Elton John, the authenticity and pain in MJB voice has kept girls like me alive and surging n a world where strong black girls are reduced to agressive. Please check out her discography these catalogs are sometimes the best window into our souls. Her music resonates internally like good soul food on a holiday.

I love come close, I think dad will love that. It's one of the songs I would recommend they watch the video first.

Amanda B

Side note Puffy worked at Uptown records as an AR and brought MJB to Uptown Records. Then when Puffy started his own label Badboy he helped with the remix album and the remix version of this song is with Biggie on the rapping part. As much as many ppl don’t like Puffy he is considered the remix king and was the pioneer of it. The beginning of this album has MJB telling Puffy they ain’t ready for this album.

When What's the 411 came out I almost broke the tape playing it so much. Then My Life came out. It remains my favorite Mary J album til this day. Mary J Blige's early albums were game changers.

Shaquea White

Early MJB gave off a lot of Chaka vibes. She did a cover of Chaka's "Sweet Thang" on this album too. Mary's song "Enough Cryin" has her both singing and rapping.

Kenysha

Please react to r&b artist SiR and do his song “John redcorn”

Marco

Your dad might really like a song she did live with Whitney Houston if you look up VH1 Divas Live Ain’t No Way.

Chanelle O

Great reaction I would also recommend the remix to this song it has Notorious BIG

Anthony Mendoza

If u wanna hear Mary spit some bars check out Busta Rhymes song TOUCH IT REMIX https://youtu.be/GDtn_FtU614

Shawn Cannon

More Mary please!! She's such an icon. Dare I say worthy of an album reaction. Thank you both for this video! What a treat! ❤️

Hodge House

Piggybacking off of this comment, I agree that "I'll be there for you (all I need)" would be a great way to kinda bridge the gap between Mary and an artist in Method Man, you first introduced your dad to a while back when y'all reviewed Wu-Tang. Plus it's just a great song and he'll likely recognize the sampled/remade lyrics and tune.

Tawanda

Her song "Be without you" Iconic song! The music video is great as well. It even has a special appearance from a popular actor at that time. Her song "Family Affair" is always played at the family functions 🤣 Awesome song!

Aeriona Moles

Mary and Common have a song together “Come Close” I adore it.

Marsha S

Ironic dad would say it made him think of music from the 70s and she remade a lot of songs from that time like "Going Down".

Dwight Buskey

Ironic I just received this album on Vinyl today. I have been searching for it and My Love on Vinyl forever and now I have then both. Her first 2 albums are some of her best. I think you guys should check out "Sweet Thing" (remake) cover of Chaka Khan. "Reminisce" is amazing. "No More Drama" is an anthem. Even the album title song "Whats the 411" is good. And then there is "My Life" which an amazing song and that album is deep. I forgot another remake or rework sampling the original that is worth a listen to is Mary J and Method Man is "I'll be there for you (all I need)" I think your dad would appreciate that one.
