PATREON ONLY: Nas - I Can

I'm looking to check out another Nas album with my dad. We have covered Illmatic (the uncut version is available here on Patreon if you haven't seen it). Maybe thinking of doing God's Son or It Was Written. Perhaps something more modern like Kings Disease 2 or Magic?

I honestly forgot about this song and video. And at one point during watching with y'all I actually teared up. I LOVED this song when I was younger. Obviously, I only ever heard the radio edit but this song really hit me. I've always lived by if I want to achieve something then I just gotta know that I can do it and then work to make it happen. So far it hasn't let me down.

You guys were talking during one of the most powerful lines: Be..be-fore we came to this coun-try/we were kings and queens never porch mon-keys/There were empires in Africa called Kush/Timbuktu where every race came to get books/to learn from black teachers, who taught Greeks and Romans. These are the messages that change perspectives, regardless of your race. Love you guys and what you’re doing going through these modern-day and future historical greatest poets, writers, and expositors.

Please do more Nas “We will survive” “Still dreaming” “Bye Baby” “Surviving the Times” “Remember the times” “Just a moment” “Getting married” “Ultra black” “Thugz Mansion (NY)” “Heaven” “You’re Da Man” “One Mic” “Rule” “Nobody”

Curiosity: Don't really know why and how, but, Chiclets are so iconic that, in Brazil, the popular and almost always used, name for all "chewing gum" (literal translation - goma de mascar) is "chicletes".

Thanks, David. My favourite all my life has been Juicy Fruit. - Kai’s dad

Well since it's out now. KD3 or Magic even

the intro to this video made me realize i enjoy watching you two talk about anything relating to pop culture; even chewing gum lol. great video.

Try undying love or I gave you power...NaS is a story telling genius

Stillmatic, God's Son, or Distant Relatives (with Damian Marley) are Nas's best work after Illmatic IMO

Big D

I get emotional pretty much every time I listen to this song or watch this video. Such an empowering and rich song. I love how Nas is able to educate in an accessible manner....You mentioned one of your favorite lines in the song is "she's my queen"...Nas is referencing a line in my favorite movie "Coming to America" starring Eddie Murphy. Thank you for another great reaction!...

Precious

Id say listen to IWW then doing a takeover reaction before doing stillmatic

Good suggestion. The only thing is that It Was Written is packed with so many deep meanings, nearly every song. So if we were to do the whole album it might be too much to unpack in one session. It's right up there with Illmatic for me, but Illmatic might get the slight edge over It Was because of it's impact and cohesiveness.

The FrontRoom

Good suggestion Luke! Another album I love from that same time period is Lost Tapes.

I feel KD2 is better. But KD1 is really cool because it is one of his most stylistically different projects, so it stands out real well. In that way, I can understand why it might be better!

The FrontRoom

That's so cool! Perfect song for that.

The FrontRoom

That's a really good point. I've never thought of those two albums that way but that's right on the mark. Magic is also really good... I can't believe he's releasing such good material to this day.

The FrontRoom

Go in order.. It was written… which some say is better than Illmatic

RedOctober

I sure did! I’ll have to get on Kai’s case about that.

The FrontRoom

We need to get some Logic going!

Robert Boyd

Please review God's Son! A wonderful album.

The 1st Kings Disease is WAYYYYY better than Kings Disease 2, plus nas won a Grammy for the first Kings Disease

Any reason we haven't gotten anymore UGK?? I thought dad really enjoyed them

Regarding the statement this song could be a PSA. My elementary school used to play it at every school event. It was my first intro to Nas.

Christian

I can’t think about Chiclets without also visualizing that scene in Dennis the Menace. If you look it up online, you can’t I see it. Lol. You guys should react to Nas-Can’t Forget About You. It features a really popular Jazz song sample by an even more popular Jazz singer.

Chavonna Christy

Kings disease 2 just to show his growth over the years. Gods son and life is good I think would be good ones because they're his most relatable? To an everyday grown man.

Paul Salvador Estrada

Great pick! Definitely prefer it to KD1. But it was interesting seeing Nas with a wide variety of features and styles on KD1.

The FrontRoom

I would recommend Kings Disease 2, a great album with an amazing Ms Lauryn Hill feature!
