Dad Reacts to Missy Elliott (Patreon Exclusive!)

Well well well... I wasn't sure how my dad was going to take this haha. This is our first Patreon exclusive video for the month of October. What are you thoughts on Missy and what track might my dad like more from her?

Comments

This sound was groundbreaking back in the day when it came out. I remember hearing it for the first time on the radio in my bedroom at night and almost being chilled with how eerie it was. Part of the appeal was how different this was back then, so it’s probably hard for your dad to grasp that compared to all the other hip hop he’s heard.

Dad would appreciate missions I can't stand the rain .

I think this video had to much visual stimulus for a first time listening for your dad,he might appreciate it more if he just listening to it. Miracles and blessings to you and yours ✌️ 💜 🙏.

Hey Kai and Dad, I’m from Hampton Roads - same as Missy Elliot, Timbaland, Pharrell Williams, & Pusha T. They are the hometown hero’s and each have impact/influenced hip hop insurmountably! Definitely would love to see y’all explore more of them.

Missy dope, please do more “Take away” “Best friends” “Sock it 2 Me” “Friendly Skies” “The rain” “Turn off da lights” w/ Tweet “Nobody’s Perfect” w/ J Cole

Marco

It doesn't help that all those cameos aren't recognizable to ur Dad

This instantly brought me back to high school. This is a song to move to! And showing your dad a Busta video is a great idea.

Dad being completely unimpressed with THEE Missy Elliot, is disappointing 😂. I don’t think this song was a great introduction to Missy at all, Kai. I think having extensive knowledge of African American culture and African American black would allow for a greater appreciation for THEE Missy Elliot and her REMARKABLE contribution to not just “urban” music, but music in general. She (along with Timbaland-highly sought after producer) was ahead of her time back in the 90s and 00s. Go do your research Kai. Thanks for sharing!

Hey Kai/Dad! Great reaction, it doesn't have to be positive, as long as it's honest, for me. It was so funny/surprising how much he disliked it because I had the exact opposite reaction the first time I heard it! That beat is just nasty and makes you want to dance and when the video came out, I was in awe of the choreography most of all. Maybe for artists who are visually innovative, you should play the song first, then the video right after so he has an immediate chance to hear a song twice and isn't overwhelmed with the visuals and song all at once? He may enjoy The Rain by Missy a bit more.

You know what...I just went and watched most of Busta Rhymes/Hype Williams videos and I am ashamed that I didn't mention "Dangerous" I smiled watching every single one. Masterpieces and SO. MUCH. FUN. PLEASE DO BUSTA. 😆 🤣 😂

Great review/reaction as always. I think you've spoiled your dad with too much substance and lyrical prowess with what you've shown him. Missy, though I respect her, is more of a "vibe" artist. Dare I say one of the earliest "vibe" artists? To me she never really had much substance, it was moreso about her delivery and how she'd manipulate words/sounds. She was about fun. Not to be taken too seriously. Like you said "bounce". She was like "Pop" rap to me, which isn't bad. The beautiful thing about hip hop/rap is there is something for every occasion. I am curious though... you referenced "I Can't Stand the Rain" by Ann Peebles early in the review but I saw the title...thought it was a typo. Figured you meant to play the song Timberlamd sampled from that "Can't stand the Rain"...but maybe you're saving that one. Rough first listen for Missy for your dad. Maybe that song will win him over? Probably not though...he should at least dig the video more than that one, I think. Btw...That was the Hype Williams video ERA!! He was making visuals that no one had ever seen before. Would love to see how your dad would react to "Woo Hah" or "Gimme Some Mo" by Busta Rhymes OH!! BETTER YET "Put Your Hands Where MY Eyes Can See". All Hype William videos. Busta is also a phenomenal rapper with so much charisma, coupled with Williams visuals... P E R F E C T I O N THANKS! Can't wait to see more. Ps. Still the only channel I am a Patron of. Also, I know you guys have done Scarface "Never seen a Man Cry" and it's in the Frontroom vault (you referred to reviewing it in one of your other reviews and I got stoked)...I am on the edge of me seat

Missy is often MisUnderstood. She's not only a rapper, she sings and is the mastermind behind so many hits. He might enjoy her features on other people songs more. Like the Lady Marmalade remix. Her and Timbaland are musical pioneers. They hail from Virginia. Pharrell (The Neptunes) and Teddy Riley were all in the same circles when they came on the scene. I have friends who knew all of them before they blew up. Their stories are truly remarkable. Missy always was an odd duck in the industry but she's still Royalty and deserves her flowers. Her videos are odd for sure, but The Rain is probably one of the best remakes of I can't stand the rain.

Well not guaranteed he'll enjoy but theyre a bit more palatable I suppose you could say. Ciara -1,2 step, Tweet - oops, oh my, Monica - So gone, ones I can think of at this moment.

Glad you showed dad the video because MOST of missys music goes hand in hand with her imagery! Im not sure he'll like any of it if he didn't like that one! Definitely don't play him "I bet it tastes like candy!" HHAHAHAHA seriously don't! She's a better producer IMO. There are loads of songs he'll enjoy that she's produced for other artists and has featured on. X

Ayeisha Perry-Smith

It looks like Ja Rule, LL Cool J, Ludacris and Busta Rhymes also made appearances in the video. All great artists. When this song came out, it became such a mega hit for her. You heard it all the time. Can’t wait until you react to The Rain.

Oh my gosh haha, that just made my day! There’s a really exciting post in the next couples days I think you should enjoy Chavonna!
