Dad Reacts to NWA - Straight Outta Compton (ALBUM)

Comments

You and your dad should react to the movie

Dr Ozzy

NWA really brought a new sound to hip hop that still sounds fresh today. In my opinion, some tracks are more relevant to it's time (80s) but tracks like the title track, Fuck the Police, Gangsta Gangsta, and Express Yourself are 100% still fresh today and will always get repeated plays by me till I die. Their next album, EFIL4ZAGGIN, is a really dope one too , despite it not having Cube on it.

I now have the song "Gangsta Lean" by DRS (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels) stuck in my head. It was like a low budget R&B song that was an ode to those who passed away. I'd be surprised if anyone has actually heard it. I LOVED it. Remember listening to it riding on the bus to school. Thought maybe it was just popular in my region but maybe not? (24 mill views...maybe more popular than I thought) https://youtu.be/dVSiv8-ugu0

Loved this, great video guys Important to note, NWA were near the first group to coin the Gangster rap style. They did so many important things for rap

Adam Morrin

Ludacris did a good sample to Gangsta Lean called Diamond In the Back.

KBG

Oh no I've got everyone calling it gangster lean now! 😅 I wish it was called that so badly 😂! You should 100% do it especially because Kai hasn't heard it! Another good one to show Kai would be Harold Melvin and the blue notes 'Wake up everybody' ! A gorgeous song every human should hear in their life. Looking forward to more of Kai's reactions. X

It’s funny I discovered Gangsta Lean kind of randomly on Spotify maybe a year ago and have it on my jogging playlist. Kai doesn’t know it and I’ve actually been thinking of having him react to it. What do you guys think? (dad)

Nice town, Port Angeles. Took the ferry over from Victoria many years ago and impressed by all the hitorical buildings. - Kai’s dad

Can you guys do ridin dirty UGK album too ?

Femi

Still none the wiser on that mysterious cow bell though! 😄

Ayeisha Perry-Smith

Ooooo! And the award goes to you sir 👏 going to have a listen now too! Thanks for your service 🙏

Wow! I was way off track, I just saw the la la la la and immediately thought of the fugees. I never heard Ohh Wee until a few minutes ago. Looks like it samples the songs Sunny by Boney M and Son of Scorpio by Dennis Coffey, which I’m listening now. Very cool.

Jason

OK! Jason are you still with me!? 😄....so the song I was thinking about is Ghostface Killah 'ooh wee' with Mark Ronson and its deffo not that..then I remembered I wanna dance with somebody by Whitney Houston and I believe it could be that!! Saying that I haven't gone through the list of known samples or anything, so I could be wrong but its the closest so far and it did come out only 1 year before Gangsta Gangsta.

Ayeisha Perry-Smith

Lol! No way! The Fugees are my fave rap band of all time! But my mum did just inform me that Ready or Not, is actually a remake of a song by the Delfonics in the 60s and Funkadelic sampled it in the 70s. But the song I'm thinking of is like early 2000s maybe? Oh I'm going to get to the bottom of this by the end of the night if it kills me 🤣

Ayeisha Perry-Smith

It sounds like you might mean Fu-Gee-La by the Fugees maybe? We will get to the bottom of this!

Jason

Omg! Just as I pressed reply it came to me!! I can't even remember who did it but do you remember that ooooooowee la la la la la la la la song 🤣 I think it maybe that song!, well done if you know or can work out what the hell im talking about 😂

Ayeisha Perry-Smith

Haha! omg! Youre right of course it was William DeVaughn who did gangster lean 😂 I'm a victim of my own laziness, for years I've been listening to that song on YouTube but someone has put a pic of Curtis Mayfield as the picture and I've never cared and so clearly my mind has used that video for the source of my memory! That's the dangers of the Internet and fake news! 🤣 and yes deffo no cow bell on that one! Argh its annoying me now, I'm thinking maybe it was used as a sample on something that came after!?

Ayeisha Perry-Smith

William DeVaughn? He did Be Thankful for What You Got, don’t remember a cowbell in it though LOL

Jason

I recognise that cow bell! Its from a song I've heard a millions times! Argh can't for the life of me! Someone help!! Curtis Mayfield I think is who sings Gangster lean. PLEASE DO THAT SONG! it's one of my faves! And its lovely and long 😄

Ayeisha Perry-Smith

OMG!! I LOOOOOOVE Funkadelic! Fave song is 'one nation under a groove' check them out asap! And if my memory doth serve me correctly one nation under a groove is where the Fugees got inspiration for Ready or not. In regards to the things NWA say, IMO, I think its just an unspoken acceptance that alot of the harsh lyrics are not actually meant in their actual form, its more of a 'omg just the fact that he said that on a rap song is sooo tough/funny! Obviously, Kai is right when rappers speak of being "real", there are obviously many rap songs, that have lyrics that are well add truly meant. But in my opinion, I bet you 100 percent, when they were in the studio recording! The worst lyrics got the biggest laughs and wrrw exasperated to sound worse, if they were really into that stuff and WANTED to be in the streets they would have been there instead of the studio. I think the stuff about their actual enemies you can take more at face value, but if I was being robbed or assaulted in front of these guys I bet they'd jump to my rescue without question! They all loved love, definitely! X
