However, it really helped contextualize my current culture in a new way that made sense of the vapid individualism I was so annoyed with. Haven't seen it mentioned much at all.

2024-06-26 22:16:46 +0000 UTCyou're right, I haven't, but I am interested. what's it like up there? to me it appears socioeconomic status gives a major leg up both on healing and on intellect, but I've come to believe that healing results are not based primarily in either intelligence or wealth. the people I know in real life who have genuinely devoted their lives to healing seem to operate on a very different wavelength than what's depicted in this video essay. with a few notable exceptions, it seems to me that almost anyone who's posting on social media all the time is not doing ok. actually healed people seem to stay off social media as much as possible

With every belief system, there will be solace, but also the egocentric and capital seeking profiteers. Since the target audience is already primed and beaten down by culture, they are susceptible to being taken advantage of. Spirituality is a journey. Social media helps, but “the work” is more than a few infographic slides and TikToks.

2024-06-26 10:23:24 +0000 UTCbrad, am such a big fan of your work, and i do think you’re onto some very important ideas here, but it seems you are in danger of throwing some babies out with the bathwater. i wonder if you perhaps haven’t gone through the wringer and had your life turned upside down by mental illness / nervous system dysregulation / chronic health conditions like so many of us have. and you’re right, our culture and our systems don’t offer real solutions to any of this, but that doesn’t mean we don’t all actually have something deeply wrong with our brains. i think you’re right that staring at a screen all day has a lot to do with this widespread problem. peer reviewed scientific studies support the notion that complex trauma really is extremely prevalent, and that its effects are as palpable and chronic as acute traumatic events (for example, childhood emotional abuse can have the same effect on the body as physical abuse). great therapists actually can make a huge difference in one's maturity and ability to have functional relationships (i’ve been fortunate to experience this change myself over the past four years) but there are SO FEW truly admirable therapists, even fewer who are affordable and accessible. if everyone could have a therapist (or better, a parent) who is a loving role model and a good example of how to live, i suspect a real mass healing really could take place. also, re: "woo culture"- mysticism is not reducible what you see on social media. the umbrellas of new age spirituality and alt spiritual healing cover a wide array of nuanced cultures and traditions which go back millenia, the serious practitioners of which are mostly not posting tiktoks & reels because they’re busy meditating and helping people in need. anyways, i would love to discuss further, and hope you continue to share your analysis on these subjects - you doing studio visits or gallery exhibits in LA ever?
