Talking Heads- Genius of Love STOP MAKING SENSE LIVE REACTION AND REVIEW

Comments

Tom Tom Club was a side project for Chris and Tina while David was doing solo stuff. Adrian Belew played with them, and it is alleged by him that Chris and Tina asked him to replace David in TH. Adrian also had a falling out with Chris and Tina after he asked for writing credits on the album and he cowrote Genius of Love.

Lol. It's not a cover. It's their original song. Tina's bass line is killer.

As others have noted, TTC was Chris and Tina's side project. The studio recordings featured Tina and two of her sisters, as well as Adrian Belew, Jerry Harrison and other musicians. TTC opened for TH on their 1982 tour. Unfortunately, Tina was pregnant during that tour, and on the night I saw them she was not up to performing both sets. So the TTC set was canceled. Still got to see a great TH performance that night, but no TTC.

Tom Tom Club was Tina's band. Not my favourite song of this show, though. But David needed some time for something for the next song, check it out as soon as possible. Enjoy :)

I'm gonna get booed for saying I like the recorded version better - but it's still one of the most iconic funk/dance songs of all time. Justin probably remembers it from the Mariah Carey song that samples it - I forgot the title - it's super famous though.

Jennifer L Kellow

surprised that Justin didn't look this song up on the interwebs during his reaction

"major costume change"...does this mean that David comes out with his over-sized suit next? or did that already happen?

MikeCarr

Nice too see you groovin to this, Justin. If I'm not mistaken next to James Brown's "Funky Drummer" the intro on "Genius" is one of the most sampled tracks on hip-hop recordings. IDK how they keep tracks of such things, but that's what I've heard. Two other video versions of this exist without The Talking Heads live. The original studio version with accompanying animation is great stuff!

Tom Tom Club was a side project of Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth. This is such a catchy song with an infectious rhythm! Tina is one of my favourite bass players. She has a great feel and an ear for a great bassline! On the commentary for the DVD, Chris mentions that people still shout out at him in the street, "JAMES BROWN! JAMES BROWN!".

Not such a stretch. Tom Tom Club was Tina's and Chris's (the drummer and Tina' hubby) band who put out several albums of their own who play their song so David can rest and maybe change costume.

As a stage spectacle, this is what pantomime would term ’a front cloth scene’, with a lively activity to entertain and cover the time needed for a major costume change by a principal character, going on offstage. Musically we get a lot more than that since the Tom Tom Club is a successful act in its own right. As infectious rhythmically as anything that has gone before, we get lots of fun and inventive moments. Yay!!
