GOOD ONE JP! LOL I have always loved this song. Oh, yes, Ringo is left handed, but he DOESN'T play a left handed kit. He has always played a right handed kit and attributes that to how his drumming is unique to most drummers. Other famous rock drummers call it "the Ringo sound"

Wow Justin - you hit the nail on the head when you found the connection to the Four Tops’ 60s hit. “(Reach Out ) I’ll Be There” At this juncture in The Beatles songwriting they were expanding their musical palette across the board citing Motown as one of their influences. Could it be that that the Four Tops song, which was recorded and released later than this track, was influenced by this song?? If so, you’re onto something. As a side note this 2009 remaster has buried Mc Cartney’s brilliant walking bass line.

I love the perfect triads formed by the three voices on the 3rd verse; one high on the root note, another descending chromatically, and the lead vocal bobbing and weaving between them. I also think P's bass is particularly good in this one.

Is this a song ripe for re-working? I always enjoy its harmonies, but perhaps lyrically it could stand being arranged in other styles... Its storyline would stand up in most any decade, with appropriate period flavourings.

The Anne Murray version is a solid soulful cover that was successful for her.

That hi-hat triplet was overdubbed postproduction, but ringo never played with two separate hi-hats.

Ringo is left-handed, and learned to play on a right handed drum kit. It makes for some interesting action. Love the harmonies, too!
