Fright Night (1985) MOVIE REACTION! FIRST TIME WATCHING!!

Comments

I LOVE Fright Night so much! God, Chris Sarandon is a big ol' bag of sexy in this (despite his name being Jerry.....no disrespect to all the Jerrys out there). That club scene......DAMN.....By the way, he was the detective in Child's Play and the speaking voice of Jack in Nightmare Before Christmas if you and Tom weren't aware. Very versatile actor! The original is one of my favorite horror films, but I will say the remake is definitely worthy. Not as good, mind you. Opted out most of the practical for CGI as most modern films do. Other than that, it's pretty damn good as well. I own them both. As you two did, I saw the remake first unfortunately, mostly because of Anton Yelchin (RIP, forever missed). He was a terrific Charlie and was a lot more proactive than the original. I'll give him that. While Colin Farrell was definitely great as always, Chris just has an aura about him that cannot be denied. The SEXINESS cannot be denied. He's psychotic, yes, but that's just a formality. On a serious note, the practical effects are incredible and the synthesizing score dropkicked you into the 80s. Gotta love it. Will forever be one of my favorites.

I remember watching this in the theater and completely freaking out when you see the girlfriends big toothy mouth at the end when she uncovers her face. This was so nostalgic. That's Roddy McDowall who played Cornelius in Planet of the Apes.

Fright Night Part 2 is my favorite. Itโ€™s hard to find but itโ€™s free on YouTube.

This is one of my favorite horror films of all time. So glad you guys liked it and so glad Tom got to watch it. Love all the characters especially Roddy McDowell as Peter Vincent and Chris Sarandon as Jerry Dandridge, such great performances. The practical effects are so good and you gotta love that fire 80's soundtrack.

Great to see Tom back for a reaction. Glad u both liked it. As usual big respect to Shaun for keeping the chanel alive.

Glad you liked this. It's a fun movie. I also agree with you guys about the look of practical effects. If done well they still look better than CGI to me. Especially in the horror genre. And some of the best practical effects experts in the business were working in the 80's.

As a young gay teen in the 80s I was completely aware of the queer (not that subtle) subtext. And it was so good ๐Ÿฉธ

They should do it one day. There are plenty of cinemas that have smaller screens that can be hired out at reasonable rates where you can choose your own film and even invite people to come and talk about the film beforehand on stage - Cinema Rules LIVE!

Glad you watched it together with Tom and that you both enjoyed it. I know I keep saying it, but I'd recommend you check out Stephen King's SALEM'S LOT (the 1979 original directed by Tobe Hooper of Texas Chainsaw Massacre fame). That book and that screen adaptation set the template for modern vampire stories set in a small town in America, as before then it was usually that the vampire was living in a castle in ancient times. It's got a 70s style of course, but it still has a great story and is so memorable. Now you've seen Fright Night, you may recognise a lot of the elements as Fright Night was a comedic spin on the same story, albeit that Salem's Lot takes the premise that the vampire gradually takes over the entire town.

The sexy sax in the background might be the defining sound of the early-mid to late 80's at least according to the movies. It didn't matter what genre. Horror, crime drama, romance, comedy, political thriller, or other genre. I can guarantee you that there is an example scene or the whole soundtrack is sax or definitively sexy sax in at least each of these. We had it in Fright Night when Evil Ed is in the alley way by himself at night right before he is turned.

Even back in the 80s when I was watching these movies, I never understood why the music was so obviously cheesy and inappropriate to the mood. I assume it was just a cost-saving measure, hiring the director's brother or whoever to create a soundtrack on his electronic keyboard. Would I travel to the UK to sit in the cinema with Tom and Shaun??? Booking my flight now!
