I believe it would be a 14d12 for a 7th level spell, and scale up to 16d12 for 8th level and 18d12 for a 9th level. That way you can use it once between long rests, and have the option to do it again for a cost. I think originally in the PHB it applied to only 1st-5th level spells.

When the overhaul feature says “take 2d12 necrotic damage for each level of the spell” does that mean 2d12 for a 7th level spell or 14d12 for a 7th level spell. If it’s the latter that’s a heavy price for getting max damage.
