Oblivion's Fatal Flaw

Hey everyone! We hit 400 Patrons pretty recently, and as a goal for hitting it, I promised I would edit together this video that I filmed back in October 2021. The footage had been sitting untouched since I filmed it (long story), but here's the final video, in all it's glory. Hope you enjoy the exclusive video, it was fun to put together! Not entirely sure how I feel about it as a video I'd ever release publicly (maybe some day on my "tomatoangus" channel), but for now it remains Patreon exclusive.

Also this is a minor thing but the Halo thing would also nerf “hot swapping” armor mid combat by making your shields initially depleted when you put them on

I’d make an exception for racial bonuses like Nords’ 50% frost resistance since they don’t need to worry about the scaling issue and aren’t meant to be applied “actively”. Bonuses like that should feel special, not something that can be replaced by a piece of gear, so a flat % resistance works well in those cases.

I've spent way too much time thinking about how I'd rebalance Skyrim to make it competitively viable without making changes that are too "invasive". Honestly, items or permanent effects that give a flat % resistances to a certain type of damage shouldn't even be a thing, even if they're multiplicative. It's very difficult to make it so that they're balanced and fun to use at low level without making them overpowered at high level, and they tend to sour the feeling of a well played fight where it turns out you didn't need the item by making the item feel "wasted". The thing that challenging games realize, especially the Souls games, is that even low-level defensive effects and weak shields should have the potential to massively reduce or completely eliminate the damage you take, IF you use them skillfully and effectively. That's what the Elder Scrolls games fail at. I realized the solution to this when I started playing the Halo MCC. Resistances from potions, enchantments, and spells should work like the shields in Halo, where they negate a fixed amount of damage (that scales by level and stacks additively) and start regenerating if you don't take damage for a certain amount of time. It fixes the scaling issue (each effect has a higher % reduction for low level enemies than it does for high-level enemies) and it has the side effect of buffing your active defenses (shields, wards, and dodging) by allowing you you to regenerate your shields a lot more frequently if you can use them at the right time.

god dammit bethesda...

Conveniently, once you're at Alteration 100, you're already able to cast Dragonhide, which gives you 80% resistance to all physical damage. Interestingly that 80% physical damage resistance stacks multiplicatively with other resistances to physical damage. So they DID know how to make resistances stack multiplicatively, they just decided not to do it most of the time.

Jackson Pekkanen

Skyrim tried to fix a lot of this by applying an 85% cap to most resistances/defensive effects. It's a band-aid solution to a problem that really should've been fixed by just making the effects apply multiplicatively or something, but it works well enough. But you know what they DIDN'T apply the 85% cap to? SPELL ABSORPTION. That means to get the best defensive builds in the game, you need to hit 100% spell absorption, which means you have to take the Atronach Stone (50%), get the Alteration 100 Atronach perk (30%), and wear two pieces of Miraak's armor (15% + 5%) You'll usually end up with the bizarre combo of two pieces of Miraak's robes, and two pieces of whatever other armor is best (probably heavy armor).

This video is awesome. Off script tomato is great.

Playing through it again right now!! Thank you, this information needs to be out there!! Another thing is how you'd think you could have gotten some fanboy discounts when you are selling stuff to the fences with the gray howl >:(

Great video! Thanks for sharing it with us, your scripted videos are always so well done, but tangential and casual Tomato is hilarious too!

LOL this video was hilarious from start to finish!!! would love to see more videos in this format too because it’s undeniable proof you have range. although the video does have one fatal flaw - it’s missing the positive affirmation snuck in there. have to put it at my second favorite video you’ve made because of that. 🤷‍♀️

Natalie

I loved this format. Partly because the more off-the-cuff style is fun and relatable, and partly because your passion for the subject matter is clear and infectious.

From my experience the "level of importance" a faulty behaviour in a game has to reach for me to care is directly proportional to how much I love the game. Games I don't care about can have all the bugs in the world and I can still enjoy playing them now and then and the bugs wont bother me. But If I care a lot about the game, when it comes close to "perfect entertainment" in my eyes, I hate the small flaws that prevent the 11/10 score. So, I can understand your point. Is it reasonable to dedicate time and energy on making such a video about it? Hardly. But lets face it, you decided to go by the name Tomatoanus. Being reasonable is optional. I liked it. I needed stupid fun because I am just diving into a nice flu right now and will likely have to work on Friday anyway. Keep the silliness coming, its highly appreciated!

This is the goofiest thing to be upset about, and I absolutely love it. Oblivion is a top 3 game for me, and I never knew this was a thing, so learning about it almost 20 years after it’s release is amazing. I honestly really like this style of video, and wouldn’t mind seeing more of it. Idk how many subjects would fit the format, but the loosely scripted/ unscripted style was fun to listen to. I also liked the editing with the “Part X” cards, nice touch

My partner appreciates your unscripted, more casual dialogue pacing compared to your speedrun explained series. Sometimes you don't gotta go fast I guess????

Would love to hear any/all your thoughts on this one, positive or negative!
