hair curls differently near the tip than near the root, (due to weight, etc.). that may be why it looks unnatural to shorten hair along the same curve. also, the strand lengths almost never line up when shortened. the best solution is to just make another hairstyle for the desired lengths. changing from the original length just doesn't look as good.
