Why steel cables can bend
Added 2022-11-27 12:26:08 +0000 UTCThis is one of the videos I'm most proud of. Not because it is better animated or scripted more correct, but because I discovered this concept myself. It might or might not be a well-known concept, but the way I learned it was by thinking.
As might be obvious I'm a bit obsessed with simple mechanics. So I simply thought: "I'll make a video about rope, there will surely be something interesting about rope". And that's what I did. First I made a list of why rope is awesome.
It's strong. It makes short fibers into something long and useful. Multiple places can fail without the whole thing breaking. And... it can bend without having to deal with material fatigue as much as non-cable materials. And that's what set off my thinking. I just sat and thought about it, until eventually. Bam. The twist. It is the twist.
