MukBangs

So I've been seeing some really shocking stuff coming out of the Mukbang community and have myself been subjected to disgusting, slurping, sauce-covered clips on my fyp. I feel like I'm literally watching people eating themselves to death and QUITE LITERALLY there have been some prominent Mukbangers who have. I would like to make a video about it: how this trend went from people happily eating food together virtually, to shoving fistfuls of fried food down their throat in the most extreme way possible. But I know this can be a sensitive subject. Do you guys have any advice as to ways I can approach this subject with some tact based on your own experiences or the experiences of others? I myself have had an unhealthy relationship with food, but I want to hear a multitude of perspectives. This is what I want to do with the Patreon from here on out: no more random videos, just involving you guys more deeply in the content with behind-the-scenes stuff, early announcements, and brainstorming together!

Did you hear the news about Nikocado Avocado? Rocked the world of Mukbangs.

I agree with Cleo about the Misophonia stuff. I have it, and I really want to support my favorite youtubers, but even lip smacks get to me. Is there a way you could make a censored version just for sound? or just mute the clips? Maybe not, I am not sure what the current drama exactly entails.

Fay

My misophonia has just been getting worse and worse, and as far as watching people eat on camera goes, I've gone from "bored" to "viscerally disturbed." I can't even stand the sound of eating in anime, and I've started wearing earplugs almost all the time to tune out the sounds of my dad slurping (even seeing him slurp out of the corner of my eye activates my misophonia, like pavlov's dog). And that's without even getting into parasocial "feederism"...

ALSO, i reckon a lot of these very popular mukbanger fake a lot of their content. Notice that it always cuts before they swallow and they somehow eat copious amounts of food without gain weight or getting sick. Big difference between competitive eating and mukbangers

There is a story coming out of china about a mukbanger dying on live stream. Heads up to everyone that it seems this story is false and the reports are using pictures of women who are alive and well, and no evidence of this mukbanger exists

Mukbang started innocent enough, and for people who are lonely, it's nice to not be alone when you eat, which is such a social activity, but with our rapidly isolationist society is becoming a more solitary experience. Our brains crave connection, and when we see people doing similar activities and actions to us, we trust them more and feel more connected (in psychology, this is called mirroring when it is in person, but can happen over the internet as well). I am not very involved in current mukbang culture, but I understand the psychology of why it became popular. Of course, we tend to take things to the extreme in order to chase clout, so it has devolved from a social experience to more of a performance or feat. Our western culture has a horrible relationship with food. We are expected to be skinny, but the only foods we can afford are not nutritious. We are promoted unattainable lifestyles by health influencers, but we all have copious amounts of food like a mukbanger, so that's easier. We are in a world that thrives on consumerism, whether it be money, food, or other indulgences.

This is totally off topic but do you think you will cover what is going on surrounding ballerina farm?

It’s obviously fetish content I think you should bring up the fact that eating is supposed to be an enjoyable experience, but when becomes gross and something you get shamed for, but also makes people angry. It just becomes really weird. Layze made a video on it and made some great points so maybe looking at that would help

Midari Cari

It is a crazy subject. I think you should go about it however you feel you should. I'm here because I love your content. I think you'll do a great job with it no matter what. And if people can't handle it then that's their problem. Hail funky frogbait!!! 😂

They're gross but kind of mesmerizing. It's clearly a fetishist, but why? Also why so much shellfish? Also is there racism? Well I mean everything has racism. Anyway I'm fat and I don't think there's anything more wrong with mukbangs than anything else.

I'm one of those people where I actually get grossed out watching people eat at all, doesn't matter who they are. So I don't watch mukbangs, but I'm curious about why other people watch them, like what do they get out of it. Perhaps if you did a video like this you could make it so the impact of the content isn't lost if someone just listens to it, rather than watches the video? Thank you :)

Lisa Oliver

I’ve never really watched mukbangs, but when I happen upon them, I always wonder how much they have to starve themselves beforehand so they don’t get sick. It’s always made me a little disturbed, especially since I don’t have a great relationship with food either. As for tact, I’m not entirely sure. Maybe make the culture of the videos more of the main topic?

E Ziggy

What is interesting to me is why it’s interesting to us. If we watch, they perform $$ so it’s easy to figure out why they do what they do but why do we want to see this stuff? What’s in it for us? I would like to understand that behaviour.

Wendy Hansen

Just here to say I’m waiting for this vid to drop. Can’t wait.

I never thought about the unhealthy aspect of mukbangs so I will be interested to hear people speak about that but personally, I really hate the mouth sounds. If it is at all possible, the sounds could be limited, it would be nice but I realize that might be unrealistic.

First, I'd recommend familiarizing yourself with the ways fatphobia is ingrained into our culture, particularly the more subtle ways we perpetuate it. Even the things we're taught are medical fact (eg being fat being bad for your health) are not as grounded in science as we believe, and some of it was just made up and repeated until people assume it was true. I recommend looking into the work of Aubrey Gordon, particularly her second book ("You Just Need To Lose Weight!" And 19 Other Myths About Fat People) and her podcast, Maintenance Phase, where she discusses how our perception of fatness and fat people has gone wrong. She often details how discussion of food and eating can swerve into fatphobic rhetoric, so she could be a valuable resource for learning how to approach a topic like mukbanging without harming an already marginalized group.

I feel like mukbangs might of started with twitch and a streaming activity together that was benign (Eating noodles with cute girls etc) and then the commercializing took over. Tipping if they used hot sauces and such. Because capitalism can't exist without ramping up to the nth degree, it feels like mukbangs evolving into today is a direct result of the monetization of it. Non Western mukbangs have a ton of filters too, where they might misrepresent the size of food being eaten (quail eggs vs chicken) Also, people are mean and fat people can't exist without being commented on. Snark communities dedicated to ripping on these people. I dunno, ppl in these communities feel like those kids who get excited to finally be in a situation to use a naughty word and then belabor it.

i personally have a pretty toxic relationship with mukbangs, but im really fascinated about the culture surrounding it. im a recovering bulimic, and would watch them instead of eating/gross myself out with them intentionally. (ive definitely left that part of my life behind me, im currently in culinary school and studying to become a dietitian) the original intention, to me, always seemed a bit parasocial too, because it was an “eat with me” kind of content, and popular with people who lived alone. food is an inherently social thing, which is why i think this style of content really took off, especially during covid. it just sucks that, as usual, social media (and capitalism) warped it into something really weird and horrible, exaggerating all the worst parts of it (drama, the huge amounts of calories, etc)

aux_iliatrix

As someone who used to always blame our love of food for our body dysphoria (took a long time to love ourself), Ve are VERY happy you're doing a topic on this, but probably don't include video of people eating. You are very good at being extremely descriptive without being overly gross yourself (just worry about the 'overly' part, you're good at knowing how far to push grossness LOL). A lot of this is, once again, people who need to the point of being desperate for love and attention, so go gently. You're doing the Flying Spaghetti Monster's work.

There's a Japanese YouTuber (who I'm not sure is active anymore, she's gone silent which is a little worrying) called Yuka Kinoshita who has a huge amount of mukbangs. Unlike most, Yuka has a medical condition that allows her to eat this food mostly without harm - something about how her stomach doesn't absorb nutrients, so despite the massive amount of food she eats, she's still very thin and her blood work/etc from her doctors is good. I feel like the Mukbang trend just warped the same way any viral trend did, going from wholesome eating together to trying to get the most views by doing absolutely unhinged shit.

Komatsu

I don’t know if this is truly relevant, but what came to my mind. There is a TikToker in the UK called Becki Jones who started off a bigger girl and I liked watching her takeaways and food because it was fun and relatable as I’m overweight too. Becki has now quit her job to TikTok full time. Her content is getting takeaways all the time and eating meals which are often thousands of calories each. She doesn’t do this to camera - which is why it may not be relevant but I find it so sad to watch Becki eat herself to an early grave. I’m sure that the fact that her income and views come from the extreme nature of her meals doesn’t help her. I find it as troubling as pro-ana content and really feel for her and others who are trapped in this cycle of eating for views. Becki does get a lot of hate online too from people for being ‘fat’ but I feel a lot of people just feel bad for her stuck in this cycle of extreme unhealthiness for views.
