Demo of Background Techniques w/ Glass

Thanks to everyone who suggested recommendations for new videos; I decided to start the month off with a demonstration illustrating my background paint application and how it corresponds to a clear glass.

Thank you so much for this demo! It’s great to see you painting in real time. Something that was very helpful to me at the moment was seeing how thoughtful and intentional you are with each brush stroke. It’s a great motivator for me to be more present and intentional when painting! I tend to make too many brush marks that don’t add to the painting in the hopes of painting faster, but then having to redo those sections, so it ends up taking longer. This seems especially important when painting glass. Thanks again!

Thanks Michael! Really enjoyed watching you paint this demo and find it very helpful! I often struggle with the keeping it broad concept. I put in too much detail sometimes and it gets fragmented then I start massing and it looks flat, more about striking that balance would be great! Such a simple object and looking beautiful already!

Thank you very much for an another great tutorial. Just wondering how do you set up a studio light for purpose of painting (not for filming). What kind of light i.e., Lightbox with honeycomb glid etc. and how much brightness will be ideal for Aputure and similar lights.

Thank you Gray! It's not greedy at all. I appreciate the feedback so much... I kind of go on auto-pilot and forget that there are all kinds of ideas to discuss. Some more in my area of expertise than others but I can give anything a shot! I will definitely try to be more intentional about addressing specific questions in the future.

This was quite helpful. I appreciate your repetition of all the little distinctions you were seeing (specular light, cast shadow, distortions), while working toward a balance of "keeping it broad" and yet rendering enough detail. One of the mysteries for me (and one of the qualities I suspect makes your work so captivating) is this business about "atmosphere" or an airiness. Your 'keeping it broad' is maybe part of this? If an occasion arises where you can speak about what you mean about "keeping it broad" (or resolving the tension between details and atmosphere or spaciousness) I'd appreciate it. And (not to be too greedy I hope) -- more about Sargent's painting "what he knew" and opposed to "what he saw" (or if you have a reference for this notion?) Thank you so much Michael.

This was a such a terrific lesson that I will watch it again and then attempt myself. I am still at the hospital everyday and I don’t know that I will try it with watercolor.
