Winter Landscape

This is a repainted version of a sketch I made on location in 2021 here in MA. It has been one of my favorite paintings kicking around the studio so this was a pleasure to make.

Hope you enjoy it!~ Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!!

Loved it! Thank you.

Great observation! Let's see if I can explain my thought process. I like to experiment buying paints and adding to my palette, but what often happens is due to being a "creature of habit" I resort back to what I know. Though there are times when something is not that much of a departure from what I do normally. For instance, the supplementation of Cad Red for (Magenta + Cad Orange) was an easy switch in my mind. But then for figure work or florals I thought the brilliant pink would be nice to have a lighter value red on my palette etc. So there are times when I just add stuff because I feel like it, similar to cooking. I use that analogy a lot, but it holds true in picture-making as well. If you "feel" like eating a steak vs. a salad that is a deep desire that is being expressed without thinking too much about it. That happens if I have previous purchased paints that sit around my studio until I see them and want to try to incorporate that color again, sometimes they stay with me for a little while and sometimes not.

Michael Klein

Hi Michael, thank you for sharing your process as usual. I was wondering about some of the new colors on your palette. I heard you say at one point you mixed cad orange and magenta to achieve your reds. I see now you’ve adopted brilliant red, as well as pink and a few others. So I was wondering what do you look for when auditioning for new pigments. Are you mixing complementaries to see how dark your mixtures get, or find yourself mixing a color you would rather reach for? I’m just curious on your thoughts about experimenting with new colors.

That was cool Michael! Merry Christmas!

I learned a lot from this demonstration. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Happy Holidays!
