I don't have a lot of my new work up on my old website so I thought I could post a few every once in a while. I recently photographed this for an article and it made me think of showing you all.

It is a large work measuring 72 tall by 35 wide, one of my biggest to date that is still around (some were attempted and thrown out or destroyed). The piece was conceived during the pandemic and it was a time when many people were isolated and going for walks to keep their mind in tact. This is a portrait of my wife but it is more a figurative piece as she is looking away from the viewer.

There was a lot of experimenting on this piece as well, if there are any questions please feel free to ask. This is part of the permanent collection here in New Salem.

Amazing, thanks for the info. Am currently working on a full length where the model is all in black (cotton) so was great to see you post this. Don't think I'll do plexiglass but will try to emulate some of your tonal relationships.

It was started with a drawing in raw umber on the front and then a chromatic block in on the back, when I flipped the panel over you can lay in large color swatches in higher chroma. Whenever everything dries I would sand it and create some "tooth" to the surface and continue as normal for the most part. Seeing the color through the panel was the most fun for certain glazes and scumbling effects

That sounds so sweet. I can only imagine what it’s like in person. Thank you for the artist, I’m watching some videos about his work. This concept reminds me of a minimalist I found through the Axel Vervoordt gallery who layered synthetic organza with paint. That’s something I’ve been wanting to explore myself. But how was this painting started? Did you create a fully rendered background on one side or just washes of glazed color, any sizing or sanding needed to adhere the paint? and did you enjoy it, would you do it again?

Hi Kasmin, thanks for engaging and inquiring. This painting was part of a small group of works done on Plexiglass panel. I was inspired by an American artist living in Paris named H Craig Hanna who uses plexiglass often with colored ink. I wanted to see what it would be like with oil paint, so I made a small study about 18x14 inches from life (which was very difficult on the plexiglass) and then the larger one in the studio with photographs guiding the process. I painted on both sides of the transparent material creating some really fascinating affects which are only visible when studying up close in person. I wanted to preserve my desire to paint in the tradition of the naturalist painters like Bastien Lepage but do something new, so the panel was the easiest way to make it contemporary in technique.

Hi Michael, I was just wondering what sort of experimenting you did for this piece? It looks very challenging, considering the size and all. It’s a pretty picture too by the way.
