We paint with Paint

I had friend say one time that in order to "paint thick... you have to paint thick". What was meant of course, is that you are not going to make luscious paintings full of energy, if you are afraid to mix a pile of paint.

This painting by Jean-Paul Laurens, The Late Empire: Honorius is a perfect example and also a big inspiration for me. The paint handling is out of this world, it reminds me that paintings need to be viewed in person and not just through our phone. Although, these close-ups are amazing and worth your time to study them.

This blows my mind. Up close so many brushstrokes look slapdash (or the work of a madman in a frenzy) and yet at a distance they snap-together, cohere, turn exquisite. Learning to see that 'doing this' will 'look like that' from a normal viewing distance -- I guess this is one of those, 'you can only figure it out through practice' things. Good god!

I’m not sure Jan, sometimes pigments make a difference but usually not so much.

wonder if he did all this without cad red light? Vermillon maybe?

wonderful , and don't you just love the props in the scene as well?

Wonderful.
