I'm going to recommend reconsidering Dr. Donovan's work. She should not be scapegoated in this conversation. The article's author chose the smarmy church line at the end, or maybe the editor added it, nothing to do with Donovan's extensive work. If we're looking at current recruitment strategies, then the sheer number of people (that you cite) playing is a more concerning target than the comparatively much smaller amount of young people going to church. I agree with you that church can be and has been and currently is a site for fash organizing, and is seen as morally preferable. Please check out Donovan's work: https://joandonovan.org/ .
