#MakeThisBattle Feedback - Nov 20th

We are in the final push to get the new battle out! But, we didn't want to leave you all hanging in terms of #makethisbattle feedback.

So, Peter took some time out today from editing to offer up feedback on some of the ideas you all submitted. You can vote for your favorite idea over on the new poll - see:  https://www.patreon.com/posts/31728839

But, let's see what Peter thought!

John F. Kennedy vs Elizabeth I (submitted by Slicer)

I have always been leery about using JFK. I think I’ve mentioned that before. But damn it, he is a great character. Maybe this is the straw that broke the camel’s back right now. Dam breaks. Volcano erupts. JFK is now on the table. But, Elizabeth I doesn’t seem like the right opponent for him. At least this isn't a Camelot thing. What is this connection?  I’m embarrassed, but maybe I need to Google Elizabeth I. Okay, no maybe I didn’t. It's who I thought it was. The 'virgin queen'. Whilst JFK was a bit of a player. It's a slim link at best. Elizabeth has and will always been somewhere on or near the table - but I don’t think this is the right lineup.

Sheldon Cooper vs The Fonz (submitted by The Omega Man)

Oh the eternal Sheldon Cooper. I have to admit, I like him not. I have to further admit, I know him not. I’ve never really watched more than an episode of his show. I did watch the creator of that show talk once, and he was very dynamic, but that’s as intimate as it got. I did try to watch Sheldon Cooper. I even think I’ve tried to like him, or at least like him for an ERB.  Sadly, I just don’t. But I do like the Fonz. I like the Fonz a lot. I feel like Henry Winkler is an achievable cameo. But, I think Scooby Doo would have to come first, and then kind of take up that whole early 80’s nostalgia TV niche!

Popeye vs Sailor Moon (submitted by Great Potato)

I’m not trying to hate, but this feels like scraping the barrel of believability. Ed, was there a category I missed? Was it… match-ups that are impossible to enjoy? Maybe I’m being too harsh. I even sort of like this one. Maybe I got triggered at the idea of doing another Robin Williams tribute. Either way, it's a no.

Kurt Cobain vs Buddha (submitted by Neo!)

Buddha is always right there as a fascinating endeavour. Would we by default be the wrong kind of disrespectful? I feel like we would be. We wouldn’t do Prophet M or Jesus C for a similar kind of reason - why-bother-poking-the-wasp’s-nest-they-don’t-even-make-honey But, Buddhist YouTube probably wouldn’t even get mad, it would be more of a “awwww man…don’t do Buddha” and I think that’s even worse maybe. I have a voice in my head that says Buddhist people don’t watch YouTube. That voice sounds like Benedict Cumberbatch, and is then handed a piece of paper that looks like a mantra but is actually the WiFi password. Looking specifically at Buddha vs Cobain as a match-up idea, I'd say it has everything it needs to be a great battle. We all know a little about each character, and there is a lot to say. I'm seeing lots of suffering puns. Punishing.

Conor McGregor vs Rocky Balboa (submitted by Mike J)

Oooooo now this is speaking my language. Maybe my ERB ears are just tuned to brutes right now. But, this sounds like it would be good. I’ve actually been eyeing McGregor lately, as he’s just so ripe for insulting and bragging. It's an interesting match-up for sure. Lloyd would probably love to be either of these characters. Zach’s voice with me as a body double for Conor? Hmm. Or we could just voice the characters and bring in body doubles. PvP Jesse acting as body double for Rocky? We could make it work somehow.

Barbie & Ken vs Beyonce & Jay-Z (submitted by Jimothy)

Now this duo theme I was prepared for. I actually like this match-up too. It’s not fair, because in any kind of rap conflict Beyonce and Jay-Z would obliterate Barbie and Ken. Cos Barbie and Ken have nothing. They would be fun to make happen on screen and funny to watch, but they have no foot to kick ass with.

Penn & Teller vs Jay & Silent Bob (submitted by Zawesome)

I feel like I used to see this a lot. Now, I am a fan of both. I love Clerks. I love P&T. I think I own all of 'Bullshit' on Amazon Video. I don’t know if I love Jay and Silent Bob enough to make them not get their asses handed to them. I’m imagining one of them should stay close to silent. But, I’m not sure if the Silent Bob character does that any more. Does Bob talk now?  Is he Loud Bob? Oh Jesus, I just only now realized that connection. They both have a silent guy. Penn talks enough for two people. I guess Jay does too. Okay then - I think Penn would abolish Jay. Penn & Teller bring too much heat. Frankly, I’d rather see Beyonce and Jay-Z vs Penn & Teller. That at least feels like they might be able to tie in showmanship.

++++++

The next round of #makethisbattle is now open for business!

The theme for the new round is... 'Historic Losers'.

They might have been bad leaders. They may be known for their mistakes more than anything else. They may have strived for success, but ultimately failed. They may have been good people, but ultimately ended up with their head on a spike.

We will select at least 2 match-ups that contain at least one character that fits that theme in the next batch of feedback. (But, as ever - you can ignore the theme if you wish!)

Same rules apply as normal. Three suggestions per person. You can post them in the comments below, email them to erbpatreon@gmail.com or post them on the Discord server in the dedicated '#make-this-battle' channel.

Deadline for submissions is 9am PT on Saturday November 30th.

Comments

Judas Iscariot vs Sir Lancelot Mao ZeDong vs Leopold II James Cook vs Ferdinand Magellan

Styx_n_Stonz

Jesse coming back as Rocky would be awesome! Or maybe we can find a fresh guest. I always thought Lloyd had the build and voice for McGregor, but whatever you think is best.

Michael Johnson

Christian II vs King Louis XVI (Both having rebellions against them) George Mallory vs Amelia Earhart (Exploration) Josef Mengele vs Michael Wakefield or Hwang Woo Suk (Scientists)

Max Wallén

Ed Wood vs Tommy Wiseau. Both failed yet adored/hated directors for their movie(s). Can be considered heroes, in a certain light, that failed to make good movies but succeeded in making people laugh. Another good old vs new battle idea as well if you're looking for that 😉

Danger Dave

I actually wouldn't mind a Popeye vs Sailor Moon.

Shawn Ravenfire

Achilles vs Davy Crockett! (Both lost their most famous battles, but went out like a boss. Both legends-in-their-own-time. The difference being that Achilles was fighting from the outside of the walls in, and Crockett was fighting from the inside of the walls.)

Shawn Ravenfire

Popeye vs Sailor Moon? This's for FitP, right? Anyway, how about Al Gore vs Barry Goldwater?

Jason Ulloa

General Custer vs Benedict Arnold is a great one. Bernie Madoff vs The Winklevosses If you want to go ancient, Achilles vs Hector.

Scott Nap

Pete really made a Doctor Strange reference.
