They are definitely pretty out there with their soundscapes and structures and absolutely understand it can be a bit jarring and certainly not for all. 😅 I strongly believe Chris Thile (the leader) is one of the greatest musicians on the planet. He was awarded a MacArthur Genius grant in 2012 for his excellence and creativity in music. And all the band members are highly accomplished and spectacular on their respective instruments. They do tend towards the unconventional and since they aren't super famous, the high quality video options are fairly limited (and live performances are a must for this kind of music). They can play some mean bluegrass though so I'll see what I can dig up in the future. Chris' mandolin was prominently featured one of Sufjan's most known tunes, "Mystery of Love" and they are friends and hold one another in very high regard. Chris is currently in two bands, has a new podcast/radio show coming out soon on Audible, recently premiered a one man musical called "The Manhattan Variations" in NYC, and he has been performing his newest orchestral piece ("ATTENTION! A narrative song cycle for extroverted mandolinist and orchestra") with orchestras all over the the US. Point is, the man is all over the map and does a lot of weird (and wonderful) artsy shit.
