Yeah most new gens wouldn't get the times. Though I was born in the late 80s, even hitting the early 90s, dial in services were quite common, you'd call a number for a service and pay a small fee. Only they were a bit like spam mail were most services were extortionate and where the initial connection would cost more then the per minute connection, so say something like £2 connection fee and then 10-20p every minute thereafter but could be anything like upto £1 a minute for some premium service. I am sure it was more expensive in the 80's because you pay for infrastructure but that was mainland rates. International rates would be exceptionally expensive. So this particular service just told you the current time, but clearly it's an international call, so international rate would apply. For 4 days. Even in that era would of been like £1/10 or 20, multiplied by 60 x 24 x 4 = between £500 and £1000 depending on rate. As a millennial, I got told off a few times for calling services in my gaming magazines that would help you out of a jam. I didn't realise the connection rate was so high and after a few calls that bill was already pushing boundaries 😌

2025-10-09 13:53:31 +0000 UTCThe talking clock is a number you ring to get the time. (It's an automated voice.) No one really uses it now because we all have mobile/cell phones. But it was rougly about £1 (or £2) per minute. Probably around $2 to $3. She rang it 4 days ago and it was an American one. Which means their phone bill will be astronomical. She basically got her own back for him dumping her. She left the phone off the hook, so the call was going on all that time.
