Question about visual novels

When playing a visual novel do you prefer the character you play to be an established charter or do you prefer it to just be an avatar for you?
I personally prefer to play as an established character in the visual novel format, because that gives the story and additional character; one that if correctly executed can lead the story to be a very good one.
But what do you prefer?
If possible also comment on why do you like the one you choose. thanks n.n
