LGR Wrap Up - January 2025

https://youtu.be/7iHJFQ2xIyE

The first LGR Wrap Up for 2025 is now available! This time with quite the welcome update on the house and some footage of the progress. Let's get into all that, plus the videos from the month and your questions!

Feel free to leave your questions for next month's video in the comment section below this post. Thank you for your ongoing support, it is deeply appreciated!

Comments

Same, I'm pretty sure LGR was the first channel I supported through Patreon. It took me years to remember that there was exclusive content 😅. For me supporting channels is more "thanks for what you've done" rather than "Here's some money make something for me"

BatteryPoweredBricks

Thanks I was wondering which mic it was as well 😅. Mine's in the mail!

BatteryPoweredBricks

Question: Forgive me if I or someone else has asked this before but I was re-watching all of the old thrifts episodes and saw the one where you got the C&C Red Alert soundtrack. I was wondering if you had ever heard of Frank Klepacki & The Tiberian Sons? It's insane to me that the actual composer of the music joined up with a video game music cover band and put on some of the best shows imaginable. What a time to be alive! The 2019 Magfest performance on YouTube is really something to behold and an absolute technical marvel. I also have to mention the band Bit Brigade for having a frontman that plays an actual NES and speedruns games while the band plays the music :). Any favorite bands of yours that do this kind of thing?

BatteryPoweredBricks

Thinking back to your thriftings days, what's the most ridiculous thrift store find you regret NOT buying?

Brandie Drown

I recently acquired a IBM PC/5150 and an AT/5170. Other than completeness, is there a reason to obtain an XT/5160 in your opinion?

Blah Humbug

Take your time! Don't stress! Glad to see the house progress, it is so cool to see that aspect of your life.

Dustin Brothers

Glad to see the progress in your house, and a slight bit of stress removed from your life. The screensaver video was one of my favourite videos you’ve done in awhile. Not to suggest any others have been of poor quality, it was just a pleasant surprise to see a video like that (Tech Tales-ish?) from you again. You are far and away my favourite channel and have been for some time. Thank you! Glad to be able to support.

Jacob Owen Lütje

Aww bud I'm so fucking happy to see how well you home is coming along, and how happy you're looking about it all! The room with the fireplace in looks like a cozy lil cave :3 My question for next month's video is - how engaged are you in current gaming and do you play regularly and/or have any favourites from the current console generation? I was genuinely suprised when you showed that you owned a PS5!) ....also the completely not-obssessed part of me honestly NOT obssessed with SoulsBorne games wonders whether you've played any/much of the Darks Souls/Bloodborne/Elden Ring series :oP

Saint_Redfield

Yeah this.

A condenser mic tends to pick up more ambient noise and room tone as a general rule. They're more sensitive to the room's acoustics but the upside is they generally give a cleaner, brighter sound. Room treatment does matter a lot—I'm not sure what your old acoustic setup was like but dynamic mics with hypercardiod patterns tend to be better at working in poorer environments. The downside is that they have less frequency response and often need a good amount of gain to give a usable signal, and you could end up with a noisy signal if your preamps aren't good. Plus, you seem like the type who close-mics which further downplays room problems (at the risk of more mouth noises and plosives). It may be that your rental isn't perfect in terms of acoustics but it's not terrible and a dynamic papers over a lot of it. FWIW I didn't hear anything obviously wrong with the SereneScreen voiceover, but I can definitely tell a difference between, say, your SimCity 3K video and that one. It's not a difference that'd make me say "Man, the audio in this video is bad" because you don't sound terrible at all! Rather, I can tell that you've got some more reflections and the room tone isn't quite as clean. But if you used that new microphone in your treated setup they'd be very close. The average youtube listener probably can't tell the difference because of their listening environment. I've certainly heard much worse from so-called "professional youtubers." But I wouldn't have pointed anything out about sound differences because I know you're in a different environment that you don't have much control over. I expect it to sound different. I bet when you rebuild your studio room if you put in some bass traps and did a basic acoustic treatment with some panels and diffusers to eliminate reflections you could probably eliminate a VO booth entirely.

Haha, yeah. I just checked my e-mails and the last sponsorship opportunity for RAID came in March 2024. Seems like it's tapered off, but there was a point where it was being advertised everywhere.

Aldranis

Are they still doing that?? I haven't gotten sponsor emails from them in at least three years. They used to send like 5 a week, ha

LGR

No shame in taking a sponsorship... unless it's for RAID Shadow Legends. Fuck that predatory hellscape masquerading itself as a "game". 🤣

Aldranis

Yeah, here in Germany we call that Altbaucharme, old building charm. 😅 If an actual electrician would look at our flats electric they would throw hands and run away. Fast and far.

BastetFurry

Wow. Had no idea. Oh well. Guess as long as you're not having to start an Only Fans, I think we're all fine with whatever you want to go with 😂. But it makes me, how in the hell would that be possible?! LMAO 🤣. What would you do? My ADHD OCD brain has unfortunately leaped into a rabbit hole. Somebody, HELP!!!!

Dustin Matteson

Those are all the types of sponsors I'd prefer not to do, as they don't really mesh with the whole theme of tech and computers. They also pay far less than I'm willing to sell my soul for 😬

LGR

Oh and maybe some ideas for lgr episodes might be a something like a "looking back" episodes to list off some audience favorite moments. Like a best of the oddware series or something. Would likely mean more engagement in the comments if you ask the audience to name their favorites from lgr's past. Might even ask some of your colleagues to name their own favorites and vice versa. Would benefit both parties in the end.

Dustin Matteson

I'm not sure what potential sponsors you're looking at. I'd say a safe bet would be services like Factor, Hello Fresh, or Misfits Market. Another idea would maybe see if the local tourism board would want to collaborate on something to drum up more tourist traffic.

Dustin Matteson

Thanks for the speedy response

Graham O'Mara

try this one after it processes https://youtu.be/7iHJFQ2xIyE

LGR

I can't view it on YouTube, says I need to be a platinum member

Graham O'Mara

That’s definitely what it felt like! The survival situation after the storm everyone here kept comparing to The Last of Us or The Walking Dead

LGR

I think doing tasteful (or funny) sponsor integrations is fine, especially given the situation you're in. Like an example of sponsors done well is Aging Wheels, for me. So temporarily lowering your standards a little is fine, I think. I'm glad things are starting to come together.

Kristian Høy Horsberg

In the beginning of this video your house and surroundings look like from Fallout 4.

Finnish Lalli

Strange, I wasn't supposed to be able to see LGR wrap up. Anyway, I'm supposed to now. I'm looking forward to the day you get your house back :)

Uncleawesome

https://a.co/d/gG1r6cB It does have silly RGB but thankfully it’s easily disabled.

LGR

Yeah I’m not a fan of disjointed sponsors. If I do one, it’ll be something pertaining to the channel, or ideally related to that one specific video.

LGR

Regarding the situation I can understand that you might do one or two sponsored videos. As long as not every video has this...TBH I find it kinda annoying that some Youtubers that I otherwise like (or in some cases liked) started to put that in every video. Like some dude talking about a retro laptop and suddenly he puts in a segment advertising some powerbank or a VPN...IMHO pretty annoying. In regards of this camera thing for film cameras, I´m not sure, haven´t heard much good from such devices. Yashica isn´t a real brand anymore, some chinese company owns it, like with some other classic names unfortunately. Maybe it´s a piece for the oddware collection.

Udo Krawallo

What mic did you buy, specifically? I see a few on Amazon that could be it, plus or minus silly RGB

Nathan (PixelPipes)

I loved it. A loose Clint is a fun Clint. And 100 times fuck Elon and all his shit.

Asaf Sagi

I don’t think of Patreon support as transactional - I selfishly feel good giving a little money to people who already created things I enjoy with zero expectation of anything else in return. You’ve already earned the support you are getting. To use a terrible metaphor, you need to put on your own oxygen mask first before you can do anything for anyone else. Take care of yourself and be in a good place and the rest will follow. 👍

Nick Melville

Yeah it seems a lot more convenient. And I really enjoyed those videos.

Alyxx the Rat

Thank you for the feedback, I appreciate it! Yeah it's wild, I really thought I'd need more in this rental setup since there's so much traffic noise. My Neumann I normally use is a condenser, this new cheaper desk mic is dynamic. Maybe I should've been going that route all along.

LGR

It is amazing how much harm can come from good intentions combined with a little ignorance! For lots of things.

LGR

Battletech you say, which House? :D Regarding the home computers of the 80s and 90s, the main problem was that these all had a NTSC/PAL divide and if you made a game that really stretched what these systems did you would be cyclecounting, and it doesn't help if one system is faster in another region. All that ended with the rise of the PC as a gaming platform, VGA output was, most times, 60 hertz and all that changed was how fast the CPU is. Question for the next one: You mentioned doing reactions on old computer shows, care to go international with these? If yes, can you do one for the German WDR Computer Club?

BastetFurry

So glad to hear things are coming along. As a person who owns a house that was DIY'ed badly too, sympathies. Get as much done before you move back in for sure.

Stephen Fralich

I think I heard you say Fuck more in this episode, than I think I've heard you say in all the years/decades I've watched you. It was a chuckle-worthy shock every time it dropped. Good luck with the house and life recovery, man.

Honorary Octopus

Hell yeah Bluesky !

Dan Milner

As a professional audio producer, uhm... yeah your audio sounds fine in your new videos so I think you can safely use your new setup without worrying too much. I'd say having a recording booth is only a concern if you have a lot of environmental noise in your area, like if you live downtown etc. As long as you don't have TOO much noise coming in on your recording, then it's fine.

Alyxx the Rat

It's so dang awesome seeing that the house reconstruction is going along swimmingly now, such a great turnaround from where you were in the last Wrap-Up, seriously, and here's hoping it continues to go well in the months to come! I was also super elated to hear that you actually did really get into MUGEN back in the mid-2000s, so for my question for next month I decided to double-dip into the topic, plus a little addendum: From what you remember from your personal collection (which I really do hope you can find and even archive on IA, never know if something on there is really rare or lost), which characters were the most stand-out in your opinion? And that can mean so many things, like which ones were the craziest, the crappiest, the most surprisingly high-quality, etc. For the addendum, these days more and more MUGEN fans are switching to a fan-continuation of sorts called IKEMEN GO, which not only has online-play support but also has so many cool under (and over) the hood bugfixes and additions that truly enhance the experience and gives creators more toys to play around with.

Cyborg Sun

Great to see you looking so much happier!

Gav Massingham

Clint, we hope you are all doing well. For next month QA I was hoping you can provide (as the largest subscriber count for an Appalachian YouTuber) an update on how your town is doing. Without getting political, maybe you can tell us what government aid / changes are happening in NC and TN over the past month or so. It is our belief that the government was not very helpful in the Fall of '24. (I ddn't finish the above video, so if you covered all this in the current video, thanks and disregard my above request).

InSyder

Regarding the plumbing and electrical if it's not code your homeowners might cover it. I would ask your adjuster if you have Ordinance or Law Coverage. Also I would ask your contractor if your current wiring and plumbing are code for your area.

B W

When did you become a fan of Steve1989MREinfo?

Salem93

Enjoy the double dose of wrap up!

LGR

I was just catching up on the previous wrap up today. Perfect timing!
