LGR - The Bear-A-Byte PC

https://youtu.be/mQYL_88MOe0

Now here's something truly unique.

Greetings, all! After somehow acquiring this bizarre bear computer at the end of last year I've finally gotten around to restoring it and building it back up. And boy is it a sight to behold.

Hope y'all have fun watching this one, as it's thanks to messages from a number of you that I even heard about this odd beast to begin with!

And now begins work on another topic that the internet made me do... chances are decent that you've seen these things online by now. Well I've got one! Along with that slim 386 handheld PC from the same person. Truly don't know what to expect once I start diving into them so it should make for a pretty interesting LGR thing.

Till then – enjoy this early look at THE BEAR.

If you can play Descent on this, than it is going to be fantastic, in my opinion! :)

Seeing how "fluidly" Need for Speed III and UT99 were running, I'm wondering if they'd perform better in software rendering rather than trying to push that poor SIS chipset into gaming? A PIII 500 has enough grunt to get it going around 512x384; I will do some testing on my Windows 98 PC to try and verify it.

Bryan McIntosh

Not yet but that’s something I’d like to experiment with!

LGR

Saw you commenting on the NIC BIOS taking a while to boot (assume its seeing if it can get a DHCP lease and boot options). Made me ask have you ever considered setting up a PXE boot setup? I know you use CF cards a lot, but if you are installing OSes on old hardware, it could help with avoiding physical media. I use iPXE in my homelab and it does wonders.

Okay from what I remember from my apprenticeship as electricians. Without load the voltage usually should be a bit higher, sometimes up to 1V higher. But it never should be lower. Also the 5v channel has 6,5v? Like what is it expecting to power there? Good thing you checked I think it would have blown up the whole motherboard.

Ezydenias

It probably got sat or stood on by a child to get that bending.

DOSGamerMan

Nah I didn’t find much need, it’s all held in place quite well by the bear :)

LGR

Not sure, the bear really doesn’t weigh much! Almost seems like it was stored for a long time underneath some much heavier objects

LGR

Some might find this a long video... but Bear with it ;)

Mat Cooper

This pc is so awesome I can hardly bear my excitement! So if it came just basic stock, wouldn't that be a pc with the... Bear necessities?

Woody's Retro Loft

You talk about it, but did you get some numbers for temps? At least to see if it's bearable.. Glad to see you saved this absolute gem!

Tossabaddle

I think you bought this PC just to make a video full of bear puns. ;)

Akselmo

Yesssss, finally! Kinda yikes about that case warping, tho, does the bear really add that much weight to it? Or was it possibly a side effect of the being bolted to that table?

Valora Inverse

Did you bend back the sheared case? Did you glue back the broken front plastic pieces? I wish you did the Duke voice with the "Much better" at around 20:00 :) Configure the 2 digit display to bE and AR :D

Dukefazon

Should get a legacy N64 emulator and run Banjo Kazooie in there

Hernando Heilbron

Yeah, I was thinking that the components in there are probably NOT loving it

Hernando Heilbron

I gotta respect the commitment to the bit that the original creator had making this abomination. So glad you gave it a home!

Tyler Compton

Where on earth is it pulling its fresh air from? The poor PIII is likely sweating in there.

Flying Toaster

The comment about the fuzzybutt pc coming to life after dark. 😨 That unlocked an old kid memory from the movie Look who's talking too. If those eyes would have lit up on boot this video would have been to spooky for me. https://youtu.be/uS0tZxXcjRU

PiraTed

What an incredible piece of history this thing will be. Museums will want this in the future. Loved the video!

Jeremy M. Beaver

Just bearly 😂😂😂

BatteryPoweredBricks

Wow, this looks like the weird offspring of Teddy Ruxpin and an early 2000s PC. I would have called it a Paw-card Bear computer.
