LGR - 5.25" Drive Bay Speaker System

https://youtu.be/cZ_CEJMOPQw

Greetings, all! I'm currently on the way to exhibit at the VCF Midwest show in Illinois and, naturally, prepwork for that took up most of my time this past week. But I still wanted to get a quickly-made video out and this bit of silliness is what resulted.

Just taking a look at two 5.25-inch drive bay add-ons from the 1990s, which purports to convert your computer case into a stereo speaker system. Complete with subwoofer! Technically, I guess. Ha. Although I don't know what I expected, results still weren't quiiite what I expected. Either way I'm a sucker for these dumb drive bay peripherals and I hope you enjoy this brief look at two of them.

Right, so! I'll be driving back home in another week since my brother and I are spending time exploring Chicago after the event, so there's no LGR next week. We'll be filming all along the way though so expect videos about the trip in the future. If you're in the Elmhurst area this weekend, do feel free to stop by the LGR Things table and say hi!

Oh and I hope to record the next LGR Wrap Up video for $5+ patrons soon too, so those of you on that tier can expect that within the coming week if all goes well.

Have a nice couple of weeks! And to those of you attending VCFMW: see ya soon :)

Hey man, I am a long long time fan. Been watching you and your content for well over 10 years. Can I just say my favorites are the tech tales and I would really like to see if you could, β€œhow stuff works” like how floppy disks worked, or how hard drives work…. I think you would do really well with that, and it would make great content. Love what you do brother, keep it up! And. Congrats on where you have come from where you started, truly impressive.

That specific set of LGR merch was only available at this year's show, and the majority of it sold out. I don't sell things online, at least not at the moment.

LGR

How would one acquire some of the promo items you mentioned without attending the festival? Case badges in particular? Lmk cost and where to purchase if that is an option. Good luck in Chicago.

Isn't the subwoofer best in a Desktop-Case (Compaq DeskPro590, etc.)? I mean the further down the Woofer, the more Vibration on the Table?

Richard Seubert

I only mention this to demonstrate the depth of LGR's patreonbase, but I'm the PM who managed the Janet Jackson laptop issue, and related the story to Raymond Chen whose short retelling went viral.

GadgetBlues

I don't see why not, especially considering how low power this one is. Now, having multiple speakers up close to floppy disk drives... That's slightly more of a concern!

LGR

Cool video :) Would it be ok for a mechanical hard drive to have a functioning subwoofer inside the pc?

Uncleawesome

obligatory Janet Jackson mention

cooooooooool!

Oh, something that talks to me! I had the opportunity to grab one of these a good fifteen years ago while replacing old computers at a school. That device felt so odd that I had to take it. Here's what it looked like: https://www.acmetech.co.uk/discontinued.htm A good solution for testing out temporary builds, especially when you don't have speakers nearby.

Dioxaz

Yeah I tested that too and it only made a nominal difference, if at all. Didn't include that in the video but I'll put a note in the final one if I find time in the next few days πŸ‘

LGR

That subwoofer is probably crap regardless, but it might have more of a chance if the bay above it isn't blocked--that grill on top needs to breathe, assuming there's a speaker directly underneath it.

I do miss the look of those old CRT monitors that actually had speakers built in at the bottom. Kinda completed the look. Made the monitor look beefy in a good way. Sadly we never had one of those, but I did like them. I actually often forget that modern displays have built-in speakers as usually I'm listening through a headset anyway

Woody's Retro Loft

Well shit this is gonna be interesting!

Alyxx the Rat

No joke, this is exactly the kind of thing I was hoping somebody would review at some point. It was the type of thing advertised in the back of PC Gamer magazine and Computer Shopper, and I never had the courage to pull the trigger at the time.

if you like pinball, Fort Wayne IN has one of the largest pinball arcades in the country! It'll be on your way home, or at least only a small detour. Might be a cool place to film and check out. If you do stop by, let me know, I live like 2 miles away from there. Might be a nice place to stop for lunch or dinner. Meals on me!

Astromanaught

These (or variations on the theme) were super common in UK schools, for what it's worth.

What irritates me the most is this device wouldn't even be necessary if not for one of my biggest pet peeves, which is the fact that most computer monitors stopped including speakers in the early 1990s. So every computer had to have an extra set of wires and mess for external speakers. And now, ironically, all computer monitors include speakers but they sound so terrible that nobody uses them and they are only included just for HDMI compatibility. I yearn for a computer monitor with good speakers again.
