LGR - This Calculator Mouse Numpad USB Thing

https://youtu.be/IZghNXI1t7s

Anyone seen images of this thing floating around online recently? I know I have, largely thanks to some of y'all sending me links! Yeah it's just one of those devices where as soon as you see it, the first thought is "Why?" followed by "I wonder if it's any good" and then if you're like me, "I have to have one." So I got one new old stock, straight from Japan! And here's the resulting video of me unboxing it and testing it out. It's not quite obsolete or involved enough for the full Oddware treatment, but this ended up being structured a lot like that regardless.

For those that aren't aware, I've been outta town for a while and only got back home a couple days ago. That's why there was no LGR episode last week and I haven't had time to finish the videos I was working on before that. So this is admittedly a bit of unscripted filler to get me back in the groove and have something to release this week, but hopefully it turned out as a bit of disposable fun if nothing else.

Oh and there's a weird bit of silence at the start, that'll be fixed in the final upload tomorrow. Lemme know if you see any other errors though, I hope you enjoy! And if not, well I'm back to editing the larger vids I was working on last week before the trip, along with the footage from the trip itself. So stay tuned.

Yeah I've been meaning to dive into that one finally! Not sure about a review but it'll surely show up as a benchmark of sorts :)

LGR

The beige one is more of a gray/white! Canon stated on their website it was meant to fit in with the typical Japanese desktop of the time

LGR

I see Eradicator on your XP desktop... upcoming review? ^^' It's one of my fav FPS/TPS games from the 90s.

Alyxx the Rat

Wait did I hear you day this was released in 2008? I guess the black version does have a mid-2000s vibe but that beige one screams 1999 to me.

Great idea, half assed execution. I would totally buy something like this for work purposes if the num pad was more usable and the build quality was good.

Joon Choi

Definitely! Unlike so many of these old combo devices I can readily see the use case argument here.

LGR

It's a neat concept. For someone on the go who needs to make frequent calculations for their work, this makes perfect sense to bundle with a laptop. As a programmer though, I keep a full scientific calculator next to my keyboard on the left side at all times as there's a definite increase in usability having the mouse and calculator separate from each other, but naturally, this takes up more desk space. :B

That's what I thought when I first saw those images floating around online! A flip phone or maybe one of those telephone mice with a handset built into the mouse. Canon was *really* trying to solve imagined problems here, haha

LGR

More or less, yeah. Canon specifically stated that it would be ideal for businessfolks traveling, this way you'd have fewer items to pack in your luggage! And yeah like, I guess, ha

LGR

From the thumbnail, I thought it was a flip phone with extra buttons. It just makes me laugh that they came up with such things...

Adrian's Digital Basement

Awe I thought maybe we would see you test it on a Vista rig....LOL, it is very neat indeed, I'm sure this was directly marketed towards Accouting type people who are on the go? it is very useful for being sort of odd for sure...

John Piscopo

Oh yeah, it would definitely be handy for hotkeys and whatnot! So long as whatever's being activated is only a single keypress :)

LGR

I did indeed, sorry to hear y'all couldn't make it! It's still worth visiting if you get the chance before this fall when they're likely to close down for good. I really only went to film things and not for pickups. Though I did come away with a couple of fun small items to fit into a carry-on :)

LGR

Did you have fun down at Computer Reset? A friend and I really wanted to go down there and meet you, but weren't able to get off work for the 12 hour drive... Hope to see some of your newest acquisitions from the warehouse soon!

Huh, I could see someone use this kind of mouse as a macro mouse for MMO's back in the day! Especially before "gaming" mice became a thing.

Akselmo

True, may as well throw it in the trash, it's worthless!

LGR

As mentioned in the post, yes. Thanks though :)

LGR

feedback: the video starts with 8 seconds of blank

Dukefazon

I mean it's cool and all, but does it have the seal of approval from Steppenwolf like the PowerMouse?! I don't think so.
