LGR - Opening Stuff You Sent Me! October 2018

Been a few months since one of these. Got a bunch to catch up on!

LGR - Opening Stuff You Sent Me! October 2018

It's done on an individual basis. Send an email if you have something in mind and I let you know if it's something needed :)

LGR

How do you send mail to him?

Hope you're doing ok Clint, you've been mentioning more feeling a bit lost or dealing with the pressures of being a YouTube creator. People here buy into YOU as a creator and how your mind works, so whatever interests you will also interest your most supportive fan base. It boils down to people wanting to spend more time hearing about what you enjoy, with some info thrown in there too. Maybe get some more social hobbies which have nothing to do with online? Refresh your head so you can feel better about what you're doing. Take care of yourself dude! We're all rooting for ya.

OSW Review

I'd just add that, being into legacy software (not so much the hardware) I always enjoy your episodes. Your youtube name always seemed a total lie though, I mean you certainly doesn't come across as lazy! Maybe it would help to return a little to your channel roots and just do a game impression as you play it, or do a let's play with pushinguproses or someone else and not feel expected to do all the research. While I certainly appreciate it when you do, I think you can totally get away with just making some... "lazy" episodes too. It was back then I found you after all, and I joined you then. Where you went after that has been very impressive and I love it, but I hope you don't feel expected to outdo yourself. I think I speak for many fans that we don't see this as a competition. More like a "hanging out with like minded friends" :)

Cleverly Blonde

Clint, keep up the great work and keep doing what you’re doing! I’m envious in that you can (hopefully) work from home full time. I test software for the USCG (desktop/portable) in a Federal Building far from my home here in CA. 45 minutes to work in the AM and at least 60(+/-) back in the afternoon in SF Bay Area traffic. I do get to telework from home once a week, so that’s an upside. My favorite videos are NOS computer builds, retro-computer systems and Oddware. I haven’t been much of a gamer since we had our daughter. However, now that’s she’s 13, I’m starting to do retro gaming with her on old NES, SNES, PlayStation, and Nintendo handheld gaming devices that I’ve collected over the years. It’s specifically because of you and David (8-Bit Guy) that my interest in retro computers and gaming has been piqued. I now have the NES mini, Atari 7 mini and C64 mini. I also have old C64, 286/386/486/early Pentium computers that I will now start breathing life back into. So... fear not. You’re doing great work, you’re inspiring others to do as you do and you’re putting out amazing videos! You’re obviously at a crossroad. Take some time to reflect, focus on what’s important to you and do what makes you happy. If it’s not enjoyable, then kick it to the curb. Eric

Eric Simmons

I certainly hope not :) Thank you.

LGR

Wow that eMate, super cool!! 😍 I eagerly look forward to you unboxing that Epsom machine. I have a white Epson branded SCSI Zip drive which I always thought was neat. In response to your last bit: Your videos are wonderful, please keep up the good work. All artists doubt themselves, but rest assured you have nothing to be concerned about. You have a unique talent for showing your genuine joy of old technology and sharing your perspective, history, and knowledge of your finds. Somehow it magically comes through the screen in a fun and entertaining way (I’m sure it’s much harder than it looks but it seems effortless!). Your content is almost infectious, in a good way, making me eagerly await further content and driving me to make content of my own. 👍

Mac84

Also your sandwich reviews/builds are awesome :D

Every great artist will doubt his own work as shoddy or not great. This is the reason the art survives and flourishes. It is in the self doubt of the artist that scrutiny towards perfection is born. Your work on this planet brings many faces joy and laughter on an extremely consistent basis when life itself can be very cold. You may have doubt but I believe its your real and raw nature that truly draws people in. I dont think thats something that could just disappear do you?

Clint, I caught the PC bug many years ago reading Jerry Pournelle’s monthly Chaos Manor column in Byte magazine. Somehow your videos have captured the same warmth and enthusiasm for computers and their many uses that Pournelle provided in his write ups on his technology adventures. Keep it real and keep it flowing from the heart.

Retro Viator

Of course you don't know what you're putting out there, LGR's just unscrupulous, random nonsense. It *is* who you are. Keep doing what you do, Clint. I haven't seen anything wrong with your content so far. You've got me into collecting vintage computers myself, which is really expanding the hobby and interest I already had. I have an IBM 5155 in my possession now and a Compaq Portable I on the way. To have you influence me enough to expand a small hobby into my life means you're doing something right.

I can give you a third one, check out EEVblog Mailbag. :)

BastetFurry

I appreciate that!

LGR

Can't wait to show it, really does look brand new

LGR

Thank you for the concern. I often find myself needing reminders like this, it really is increasingly tough to guage how I'm doing the larger the audience becomes.

LGR

Heh, yeah I always knew there were other "Smarties" than what we have in the US, but I had no idea they were candy coated chocolate things! Good stuff indeed.

LGR

Many thanks, Robert. Will continue to do my best to live up to the hype, so to speak :)

LGR

Thank you for the support. Yeah it's fair to say a bit of the anxiety comes from going through so many types of projects, one after the other. I feel quite split in my interests and often have no clue if it'll translate to interest with my audience

LGR

Glad to hear that!

LGR

Heh, yeah it's really one of the most unique pieces I have at this point. And thank you, I can only hope what I'm doing makes some positive impact in the long run.

LGR

Haha, no worries :D

LGR

Thank you for the kind words :)

LGR

YEP. Just about every video..

LGR

You know those throwaway things that you might just say off the cuff that then get focused on at the expense of everything else and you kind of wish you hadn't mentioned anything because it wasn't really that big a deal...well I do anyway. Keep doing what you enjoy.

Techmoan

Sorry for the sike-out on the edison-bulb box!, I actually only used that as filler to wedge the TRS-80 box in place so it wouldn't bang around and crush everything else. It was that or packing-peanuts! Have an awesome week.

Jeremy

Holly Crap, I lived near Belleville for years (actually went to school there). I heard it was a tech hub in the 80's and 90's but I've never seen it, since in the 2000's it turned into basically Detroit, and (at one point) break-in capital of Canada.

Andre Pothier

Ants to the picnic indeed. LGR lets me indulge my retro collecting fantasies. Without filling up my house, I can see more than I'd ever be able to get my hands on alone. And it's available to everyone with access to YouTube!

JennaKay

You're doing a great job and everytime you put out a new video, I'm onto it like ants to a picnic. Keep doing what you do, your style is awesome. And really looking forward to seeing the review on that Epson computer. Should be a great video.

Bryndal Dwyre

Sorry to hear about the self-doubt. Your video quality has been quite good for many years now and I think it has only improved with time. Even if you made a video of you eating potato chips for an hour, I think I would watch it. Your videos make me happy every time I see them, no matter what the content is. Just have fun making videos, tinkering with things, playing cool games and you're golden. I say this tho, I kinda miss LGR plays type of videos. Just watching you play something and chatting about random stuff is really relaxing. But anyway, do what you wish, it's your channel. :D Keep on keeping on!

Akselmo

Hey Clint! You and your videos help me through a lot of tough times, I’m sorry you’re feeling self-doubt, I understand it can be so taxing on many different parts of life. I’m sending some prayers up for you for peace and reassurance! Regardless of what you make we all enjoy it so much, definitely do whatever makes you most happy! 💖

suchmeerkat

Dude that epson computer looks super cool, can’t wait to see the video on that!

Zachary Outen

Hey Clint. I joined your Partreon after binging every episode of Thrifts one day. As a fan and supporter of the show I am worried that you're feeling a bit lost when it comes to how the show is doing. I personally look forward to every episode you've put out to this date and have not been disappointed in any content you've produced thus far. You show interesting stuff from my childhood that I've forgotten about or would love to play with but can't due to space, time and/or money so I appreciate the work you do to produce the show. However, If you're feeling doubt or worry about anything, make sure you take the time to investigate it. You don't want this stuff eating at you until you crack. You only get one life to live, make it a good one.

Andrew Paul

Just got back from Canada after a week visiting some of the wife's family, and we definitely brought back some Smarties and Coffee Crisps (and a bunch of Swiss Chalet sauce packets). It's good stuff.

John Covil

Clint, your videos are super inspirational- I hope one day to start collecting like that for myself! My first computer (lost to the ages, unfortunately) was an Emerson 80286 with 8MB of RAM and a Seagate ST-157A (still have it) hard drive. I have always loved retro tech and when it came time to subscribing and helping support the channel, there was never really any question- I couldn't not say "Hell yes!" for the many hours of enjoyment that I have gotten out of everything you do! Tech Tales, Thrifts, the retrospectives; hell, when I discovered that Thrifts was a thing, you were on like episode 20 or so- which meant I spent like three days powering through the entirety of Thrifts, from Episode 1 up until like episode 23 I think it was. And now I will always support your channel, from now until you decide to do something different- you will continue to have my patronage!

Robert Butler

The self-doubt thing I absolutely get, I feel it myself when my life shifts through various disparate projects. Just like to say that I appreciate all your different kinds of videos, but never find myself impatient for any one thing. I’m more than pleased that you produce each video as the opportunity arrives, and I watch them all with similar fascination. Some more than others, but everyone’s got their favourites! I’m happy to have been supporting it all here for the past couple years! Whatever you make, I’m game.

Steve Skafte

I marathoned your other unboxing videos a week or two ago, but I'm not sure why I like them so much since standard unboxing vids bore me. Perhaps it's the quantity, where there's just so much variety along with so many potential neato things to get a glimpse of? (Best guess, anyway, since that's roughly why I watch your other videos...)

Tukaro

The Commodore nerd in me is quite jealous with that piece of the old MOS building. That's a lovely piece to have around indeed. Sorry to hear that about the struggles - what you've been doing is great, it's utterly important to help preserve things, both hardware, and software (I actually quite dug the ep on Motor City Online from that angle alone).

Rob Caporetto

Sure did and it looks great on my Apogee/3D Realms shelf :)

LGR

Thank you for the kind words, am certainly trying my best! The balance struggle is real, sometimes I regret branching out into so many types of videos

LGR

Glad the Duke Nukem disk arrived. I was starting to wonder.

Mr Lurch

You’re doing a great job Clint. It must be very hard to balance all the demand for different types of content from your various fanbases (“more game reviews!” “More retro tech!” “More sandwiches!”) while keeping yourself sane and healthy. But most of us enjoy all the content you create, regardless of topic, and hope you keep it going for a long time to come. You’re creating a mix of content that really resonates with lots of people and you should be proud.

Joon Choi

Indeed.. I've wondered the same. For me it's more of I don't want a pile of boxes sitting around, so I always film the unboxings when they come in, then compile it all when it is time for an episode.

The 8-Bit Guy

How is it possible to avoid the temptation to not open the packages for months, until you have enough for a video?

ClanFever

I have been! It's quite the quality pad.

LGR

Yay! Hope you enjoy the 👁🐝M mousepad! :)

Thomas Fuchs

LGR and The 8 Bit Guy are the only people who can make an unboxing video interesting :)
