LGR - Cleaning a BMC Monochrome Monitor from 1982

Here's one for all you clean freaks out there! Always getting requests for more videos of just tidying up old tech, so here's a video of exactly that. Same display that I found near the end of LGR Thrifts Episode 39.

And yeah I had to whip out the Apple II Plus to test this one out, it was only appropriate. A simple, laid-back video. Enjoy :)

EDIT: updated the video with some audio fixes, new footage

Damn, I like these restoration videos! And the swinging way you use your hand to brush the parts is almost unique :D. Please, just get on with the stuff!

Ralph

Thank you for the support :)

LGR

Yes indeed! Been back there many times, find something new every visit

LGR

Hehe thanks, I thought the same thing while editing

LGR

Love your fast forwards! Reminds me of speeding up the game in the old Sims games, especially when they did some kitchen work!

Timo Schmidt

My first advance video as a Patreon subscriber. How exciting. :) Love these restoring/setup videos of old hardware.

This is the monitor you got from that junk shop, right? I was waiting to see it return in an episode :-D Also, have you been back to that store?

Eric Siegel

I find it hilarious that they just slapped a logo plate on top of the knob holes. I had no idea that was ever done!

Steve Skafte

Probably the only video on youtube about cleaning an old tv that ends in multiple deaths

SuperBunnyBun

I miss when so many products had the atomic symbol on them, back when things being radioactive was a good thing? Anyway, neat. It's as old as I am

SuperBunnyBun

I love your “let’s clean an old thing” videos! More please! :)

Thomas Fuchs

I think it's really cute that monitor lives a past life as a TV.

Alyxx the Rat

Great little video. I have been loving this type of video lately. Keep 'em coming

Seriously though, if this is the sort of thing you're aiming for with the Monday videos going forward, I reckon it's great. Casual, relaxed, bit of fun.

Dominic Ashfield

LGR does ASMR? 😉

LGR - The cleaning show!

Got two more videos that should be done in the next couple days as well, hang tight!

LGR

Definitely describes what I do more often than not. Thanks :)

LGR

"It was behind a bunch of crap and nobody wanted it, but I diiiiid" That sentence from you fits you really well with your lovely obsession with old tech and other junk that nobody could possibly care about. That was really amusing to me for some reason and it's what makes LGR, well, LGR. Nice video.

What’s the music that starts around 11:18?

Simon

nice one duder

Kenny Ketner

Awesome. I was starting to go into LGR withdrawal.

Garoninja

Thankfully they're made to :)

LGR

"I'm curious if these knobs come off." I'm more curious if the knobs go back on, to be honest. :D

Jeffrey

That'll be in the final draft of the vid!

LGR

Oh man.... you didn't open the monitor up. :( I was hoping to see if the internals were clean. As clean as the outside already was I bet the insides were in good shape too. "The world may never know." - Tootsie Pop Announcer

perkindo

good video. i would love to know more about that dc-2 robot in the ad though :)

Yep, fixed for the final draft. Thanks!

LGR

That really does look a great setup with the Apple II, delightful!

Mat Cooper

Just a composite input so it'll hook up to practically anything from the past few decades, very little conversion needed even on newer systems. I showed it hooked up to a Sega Genesis in LGR Thrifts 39!

LGR

There's an audio desync at 2:46.

blahmoomoo

So if this is really just an old TV in disguise, how hard would it be to hook it up to a VCR. I think video on a green phosphor screen would be trippy. Or convert it to HDMI and play Fallout 4.

Steve Lovelace

All green, all the time. Gotta love it.

LGR

Perfecter timing, was just looking for someone to watch my video!

LGR

Ah, the early days of computers. When things were still... green.

Gary Leigh

Was thinking about such a collab actually. Would have to make my way over to Texas, or work out some shipping options, but that'd be fun if David was down with the idea. I also have an original Apple II and a later IIe that needs work, heh.

LGR

Ahh. The old “lets turn this TV into a computer monitor” trick. At first thought, when you compare later computers (eg C64) plugged into a composite screen vs a ‘proper’ monitor the difference was night and day. But in these earlier machine, because it really wasn’t pushing the graphics very hard, they worked really well. As for the Apple II, perhaps a collab with The 8-Bit Guy? :) That’d be kinda awesome. An epic YouTube resto on that keyboard! But that monitor combined with the Apple is perfect. As much as the II series could do colour, let’s be honest, 99.% of them had a green monochrome screen sitting on them.

Mr Lurch

Perfect timing, I was just about to look for a video to watch
