LGR - Star Wars Episode 1 Racer

It's finally been re-released and works nicely on modern PCs, so it's as good a time as any to take a look back at the original release!

Now this is Pod Racing!

Protomario

Funny you post this, one in a box just came for sale from one of my favourite sellers on Trademe (NZ Ebay) https://www.trademe.co.nz/gaming/pc-games/driving-racing/auction-1617029223.htm?rsqid=b638f2c9b58c47629adaef58158d4714

If only everything undesirable would fade into a picture of Jar Jar... I don't know if that would be a good warning to stay away from things that suck... or if you'd just get sick of seeing his stupid face everywhere. :P

Lindsay Michelle

Can we get a clean version of the Watto mix at the end? :D

Dude

Thanks for throwing in the Voodoo 3 footage, that's what I had back then and while watching most of the video I was thinking I would have swore the game looked better, fairly high res. Also had it on the Dreamcast which was an excellent port. This and Need for Speed 3: Hot Pursuit are the 2 best arcade racers from that eras IMO and both are still very fun to play.

Chris Munch

Not that I'm aware of? But being on the PC all you'd have to do is configure play to use multiple joysticks in the options, or hook in a proper dual-stick flight controller.

LGR

Haha, thanks!

LGR

Great video :) your enthusiasm for the game really stands out, especially since I have fond memories of this game myself! And that outro music you did with Watto humming is brilliant :D

Mark

Does the PC version have an equivalent to the "Dual joystick" control scheme that the N64 version has? Even though it was a secret cheat, likely because of the control scheme requiring two controllers, it was a very interesting way to play the game.

It is indeed! https://www.gog.com/game/star_wars_episode_i_racer?pp=fa33988727d7f572be002b845e65858e68bb92e9

Love the review; I'm definitely going to give the rereleased copy a go ... maybe even convince my roommate to play some LAN racing :P. Is the affiliate link available yet -- maybe I'm just missing it? I want to make sure you get a cut.

This is honestly one of my favorite tie-in games of all time, and I'm glad to see all the love for it.

I always loved podracers when I was a kid, mainly because of this game. It would've been nice to see some classic Star Wars locations within the tracks, though. Abyss could've been Bespin, for example, while the ice track could've been Hoth. Either way, great game, and great to see it's been re-released. Always nice to see.

Tim

I played the N64 version when I was a kid. I'm not usually one for racing games, but this one I remember fondly. To be fair though you could have slapped Star Wars onto almost anything then and I would have been in it

Garoninja

Yep, it's a longtime favorite of mine!

LGR

You're very welcome :D

I loved the sequel on my PS2 back in the day. It seems like this first iteration has a couple more features though :O Speaking of racers, Clint, have you ever checked out Dethkarz? That's late-90s sci-fi racer for you in a nutshell :D

Played this a lot on the n64. I still remember Anakins "come on come on, work" line and I use this line to this day.

PhotoSvein

I remember the first discovering this game in middle school. Apparently one of the computer room teachers loved Star Wars because a demo of this game was installed on every computer in the computer lab. You can only play the first level in the demo though. That room was also where I discovered ski free!

Terry Lee

FLÅKLYPA!

YES! Thanks for covering this one, Clint. Spent/lost so many hours playing this on PC.

Justin T Lee

Thing I just realized: the announcer is Greg Proops, who was sometimes on "Whose Line Is It Anyway?"

Peter Metzger

GOG coming out this week apparently.

Wallace Fung Wooh Sheen

Btw Clint, did you know that Lucas copied many elements of the podrace sequence from an old Norwegian stop motion film from 1975? A race with the protagonist's home made race car vs the antagonist's professional team etc. Not sure if he actually admitted to it, but the similarities are too many and cannot be a coincidence, so I bet you George saw this at one point and stole (with pretty great success, we're not mad ;)). https://vimeo.com/84289137

Anders Enger Jensen

Ooh.. I had the demo back in 98/99 some time. Great memories, not the best game. :D

Anders Enger Jensen

Oh, yes- I remember Jedi Knight. (From the catalogue)

Robert Butler

Played this so much with my dad back in the day, those were good times! Thank you for the massive amounts of nostalgia while watching the video! :D

It's working! It's wooorrrking!!

Beegotron

Where was it released on?
