LGR - Resound OPL3: 4-channel Adlib Sound Card!

Adlib-compatible sound card with surround sound capability? Well that's different. Let's see what it can do!

LGR - Resound OPL3: 4-channel Adlib Sound Card!

How do you tell the front speaker input from the back speaker input? There doesn't seem to be a label on those ports.

Will Herrmann

I just love that Space Quest III theme. Always have.

Gary Leigh

Thanks so much, I am glad you're enjoying!

LGR

Really cool thing that you got there Clint. Grew up within the late DOS area. Born 93 and my first computer ran dos 6.X dont really remember. But damn that computer was awesome. And your channel really makes for great content. Glad that i found your channel and glad that i can support your work. From Sweden with love!

I'm sure you'll see more homebrew PC stuff in the future then :)

LGR

That's one of the earlier games I got boxed when I started collecting games! Been meaning to cover it forever, ha

LGR

;)

LGR

Nice, it'd fit in well with those machines indeed! Been working on restoring my own Mega PC lately.

LGR

Yay, the Unisys is back :D I just got mine onto a retro PC cart with my X68000, C64C, Amstrad Mega PC, and Mac LC III

Wow. That's really neat that they added surround sound! o_O

Evan B

"...put the hardware out there and then hope that somebody in the homebrew scene does something with it..." In my mind that sounded "Let's hope David implements this in the new Planet X" :P

LJFox

If love to see you cover Mega Race some day, as that game had some AMAZING AdLib music!

Tktagmedia

Dude!! If you have more newvou "retro" tech, I'd love to see some videos on them. Thanks to you, I've been recreating the system I had when I went to college (with a few upgrades of course) just so I can relive a lot of the titles and games I've seen you play and test with.

Carey Brown

All we need is new Sierra SCI drivers to take advantage of this thing :)

Jason Wellband

Now that'd be awesome. I'd be all over a modern implementation of something like the Roland LAPC-I.

LGR

Yep, they seem like a good idea, especially combined with the decoupling capacitors. Might be interested in this video from Kevin, the guy who made this board: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ImevKs--BFs

LGR

Totally stealing the WIMA cap idea. I had a good hard thought about it, and it's a really good idea. Plus, as a film capacitor, as they heat up, they have this ramp up as they discharge which can give audio a really warm sound. It's the same principle that audiophiles use those dangerously old paper resistors for.

avfusion

If your DAW or similar sees it as a 4-channel output it should be pretty straight forward routing.

Looking forward to a MT32 card.

Ryan Yoder

Whoa nice! I really want to buy one, because I really don't have an Ad Lib card anyway.

ReeseRiverson

I have been getting into playing with MIDI things over the past couple of years but I haven't done anything with retro PC hardware (only modern PC and modern/old keyboards/synths) - I wonder what's involved in arranging music specifically for this card? Hmm.... *scratches chin thoughtfully*

Peter Metzger

This is really cool. I would love to see coverage of more homebrew type equipment. I like to purchase newer equipment for my older machines so I don't have to deal with dead caps or other crazyness (I remember getting hardware to work pre-internet).

Matt Standish

#Notsponsored :P

LGR

Likewise! I'm seeing more and more homebrew hardware for retro PCs every year and it's awesome.

LGR

It pleases me to no end that new retro tech like this is still being developed and actually seems to be a growing market? :)

Nicholas Wilson

Every time I see those "Roland" speakers I feel like someone stamped a watermark on the video.

Pablo Rodriguez

Really cool! One use-case I immediately thought of would be to combine it with an AWE64 with CQM disabled :)

One can hope!

LGR

Yep, this is described in the video. The feature is already present on the original OPL3 chip and it just hadn't been taken advantage of in this way, hence the card!

LGR

I understand the OPL2 and OPL3 chips put out 4-channel audio anyway, the difference is that this one doesn't mix it down to stereo like most sound cards. Nice!

Hopefully 8-bit Guy knows about it! Planet X3 surround support anyone?

Christopher Bassett

Yeah I seem to be neck-deep in Adlib lately ;)

LGR

Sure is! Nothing quite like an original OPL3 chip.

LGR

Totes did not know there were so many neat Adlib repros :D

avfusion

That thing is just... amazing to hear.
