LGR camera upgrade!

When you introduce this camera, you need to downscale the footage, and flood it with VHS filters. Make it seem like the old days of LGR. Just for a couple of seconds. "Yep, I paid 2000 bucks for this beauty!" :D

Great choice and the that image quality is going to be crisp and that 5 point in body stabliser is going to help a lot in terms of hand held.

Yep I know, I've been keeping a close eye on the GH5 since it was announced early this year, especially the AF issues after seeing dozens of reviews mention it. I only got it now because after trying a friend's unit with the updates I was happy with the results. They also recently came out with a v2.1 firmware that improves it even more, which is what mine has! Thankfully I don't rely on autofocus very much for the kind of filming I plan for this, and a big reason I'm switching back to a DSLR is the manual focusing goodness. And yeah matching the shutter speed is key to filming a CRT with minimal flicker! Obviously a speed of 60 doesn't work on refresh rates outside of 60hz though, but there are always further adjustments to make things better :)

I myself just got a G7 so that I can shoot 4k24 for my own videos. However, the entire Lumix line has a big problem that you need to be aware of: The continuous autofocus is terrible when shooting video. Lumix cameras, including the G7 and the GH5, use a contrast-detection autofocus method. This method is just fine for stills, but it tends to hunt for focus all the time while shooting video. There are many videos on youtube that talk about this, and I've tried many different focus options (face, tracking, etc.) and they all have issues. For shooting myself as a talking head, only manual focus works perfectly, as does a wide depth of field (ie. high aperture, high f-stop). But of course a wide depth of field doesn't give you that nice bokeh that is all the rage these days. The only mitigating factor is that the autofocus speed is tied to the shooting framerate. So if you'll be shooting 60p all the time, then it will operate 2.5x faster than if you were shooting 24p. The v2 GH5 firmware is supposed to help with autofocus, so definitely update the firmware. Good luck! PS: If you're going to shoot a CGA screen, use manual focus, manual exposure, and set the shutter to 60. Yes, I've recently tested this ;-)

I had the GH4 and it was a huge difference going from a Canon DSLR to the Panasonic, it has way more video "centric" features.

For the camera-curious out there: I really do still like the Sony AX53 for a number of uses, but for the kind of stuff I find myself frequently filming I have continually found myself irritated. Main thing I wasn't so keen on is color reproduction in certain lower-light cases, and it tends to be noisier and over-exposed on auto or semi-auto mode. This can be alleviated by putting it into full manual mode, but I rarely do that because the UI navigation is a pain, and controlling the lens manually with its tiny focus ring is a chore. As is the super sensitive rocker zoom button, I'm not a fan of that compared to the control of a proper DSLR lens. It connects with iOS/Android apps to provide a better interface, so that's nice, but also something I rarely do because again it's a pain to go through every time I film. The optical image stabilization for handheld or slow-moving shots was the big reason I wanted it, but after seeing how awesome the intelligent dual stabilization is on the GH5 I felt I could move on at this point. Seriously looks like you're using a gimbal in the right circumstances. I also shoot CRT footage rather often and want to show that in 60fps, but with the AX53 I was limited to 1080p for that frame rate. And seeing as I often film in 4K to crop-zoom down to 1080p or 1440p, I wanted 60fps in 4K for those situations. And finally, my previous DSLR was a Canon T5i, and a big reason I moved on from that is the short recording times and the fact that it heated up some much. I often just want to set up a camera and let it film for a couple hours when I'm working on a lengthy LGR video, so I needed something that would record indefinitely. The fact that the GH5 records to dual SD cards for however long I want is awesome. Then there is the fact that I can import my own LUTs to the camera. I don't know how often I'll use that since I usually record in a flat color profile and color grade in post, but it's great to have the option since I film in the same few spots over and over. It also does some extra stuff that I don't really need, like absurdly high 4:2:2/10-bit/400Mbps mode, but hey: if nothing else it amuses me that I can film a 4.77MHz IBM PC at such high fidelity. Because the juxtaposition amuses me.
