LGR - The 1997 DVD-ROM Upgrade Experience

Upgrading that Packard Bell 955 computer that I recently restored with a classy Creative Labs DVD drive and DXR2 MPEG-2 decoder card! With mixed results, haha.

LGR - The 1997 DVD-ROM Upgrade Experience

Comments

I remember getting a DVD drive for Christmas along with Gone in 60 seconds. Great memories!

Andrew Buffenmyer

This was a cool video, thanks! And the best thing about the screen saver interruption was seeing your reaction reflected in the monitor!

and that last cable sticks in your arse.

Knocking the front panel out for the DVD drive reminded me of my youth. I tried to pull one out, and in my infinite wisdom, decided to pull it with my grip firmly on the sharp edge, and I ended up cutting my left index finger really deep, almost to the bone. I hated those panels.

I love these videos ( retro hardware ) Im waiting for an LGR meets LGR Foods video where you stop mid project to break down a killer meal and then get back in :) Awesome video like always! Nice to see a whole group of people on this channel that love retro gear like myself whether its audio / computers / general tech etc

Ebay

LGR

How did you get that still in the package?

I remember when we got our first DVD drive for the PC. Family huddled on the couch watching a little 15" CRT, with a picture playing in widescreen within it. Thanks for showing some nostalgic memories of radical late 90s software and design.

Ois

Can you post this gem of a video on the internet. The world needs to remember!

Let your guard down for a moment and surprise, penises.

Iron Arse Hands

xD That screensaver. Oh, LGR, you fountain of unintentional comedy. Never change. I remember when we got our very first DVD-Rom drive, my brother bought a copy of Jim Henson's The Dark Crystal along with it, which was a treat in itself cause I'd never seen it. That is, when we were actually able to watch it cause the drive didn't come with any DVD player software. All we could get was a crummy trial version of PowerDVD that cut out the sound after 5 minutes, but my brother was eventually able to acquire a registered copy so we could watch it to our hearts' content :)

You should upload that creative video to yt ^^

Now that is one rad boxart for a dvd player

I played the snot out of Wing Commander IV on CD-ROM, and I finally am getting around to playing the DVD version from GOG. I highly recommend picking it up; it uses a software wrapper to do the same sort of de-interlacing that the DXR2 card did back in the day and still looks great. Oh, and make sure you play it with a proper joystick; it transforms the game!

Bryan McIntosh

I had one of those back in the days. One odd quirk for me when hooking it to a TV was that the card didn't seem to remove macrovision copy protection, so as you watched a dvd on the TV it would constantly fade from very dark to very light and so on. Definitely could still watch a dvd and after a while one didn't really notice it much.

Smelled radical man.

chuckgrody

Love the screen saver!

Can you give a review on the 1990' s air that escaped from the bag. That's retro air there.

The classiest of screen savers. Also, dat promo video.... the cringe is real.

The Enforcer

I played through Wing Commander 4 on the Playstation and I never saw the word "Penises" floating through space in that version. I missed out.

Vlaphor

Normally one would probably reshoot the scene with the screensaver showing up. Thank you for not being normal

SuperBunnyBun

PENISES LOL

Now that would be a good day in 2000

LGR

I remember buying my first DVD-ROM in 2000. It was from Best Buy (can't remember the brand) and the outside it said 4x DVD-ROM but when I took it out of the box, on the inside was a 8x drive with a letter that said "Enjoy your free upgrade!" SCORE!

Neither one, but good guesses :) I fixed it just now and I'll be updating the video soon

LGR

Maybe the problem has something to do with more modern copy-protection systems? (I think modern Disney DVDs have quite unique protection on them) either that or it could be that the drive doesn't support dual layer discs?

LGR

That screensaver had me so confused, I thought it was part of the game lol

Zachary Outen

That Creative video NEEDS to be uploaded to YouTube. That was amazing!

Randall Strye

My Tom and Jerry DVDs are all double-sided. That's about it. ...also, I always love these fiddling-with-old-PC videos. Keep 'em coming!

Tim

That was a nice look back. I remember seeing the kit advertised… and honestly, had I been able to afford it then, Wing Commander IV would have been the selling point for me as well. And the screen saver kicking in was the perfect way to lighten up the mood there ;)

Rob Caporetto

That box just SCREAMS "'90s"!

I remember Selling Thise dets when i was a sales apprentice at a computerstyret in Copenhagen. The store bought Cutthroat Island on DVD from the US to show What DVD Could do, and we sold a ton of Encores. I remember a customer buying it but didn’t want the games, so he gave me the Wing Commander game. I didn’t get DVD for my co outer until the next year (being a laserdisc guy I bought a set top DVD player when they came out at the same time). I actually thought, during the wing commander part: “I don’t remember that text in the cutscene” until it hit me that it said Penises and you started laughing. Best ending... :)

Because Why-Nerd

I always put my references out onto a tray.

LGR

Yup, this is actually pretty easy to pull of in hardware, check out much older genlocking on Amiga hardware.

BastetFurry

Nice hiss ;) nice reference to Steve1989!

JF Caron

It is a true sound of success, I love it.

LGR

You bet, thanks :)

LGR

I'm glad you enjoyed it!

LGR

*makes out with a CRT monitor*

LGR

Pretty much every machine I have from before 1998 needs the cable for CD audio.

LGR

LJFox

Didn't most CD audio go over the bus even in the 90s? I seem to recall there wasn't much need to use all the audio pass through cables very often.

I think my first DVD drive was in an iBook clamshell. The density of DVDs didn’t change over time, they just added dual-layer support. So 4.7GB per layer per side. Might also be why your player can’t read those newer ones.

Bastien Nocera

how those that fucking passtrough work, does it just paint over the pixels where the video is? I mean that is kinda done anyways but it is weird like getting that from an already outputet signal. Like a video in video kinda thing?

Ezydenias

Needs MORE passthrough cables! Install a Voodoo 2 ASAP!

There ain't no coming back from that VOB file.

Matthew Dooley

YES! Bought that exact kit back in 1997 and had the 2.1 Cambridge Soundworks speakers. Guess that was my first HTPC 20 years ago. Very nostalgic, thanks for doing what you do.

Great hardware video as always! Brought me back to the late 90s, with all the screwing around inside of the computer. Keep it up man!

Timo Schmidt

Nice video, dude! I give it the score of Penises/10!

I always liked the Creative packs. I bought the Creative Sound Blaster live! Value pack with Cambridge Soundworks 4.1 speakers and it was a dream came true. Oh, I miss Creative old good times

OMG THE SCREENSAVER. I about fell out of my chair man.

Jason Dupree

I had the original kit! I bought one of the very early DVD players when I was still in college and didn't want to bring it with me due to limited space. So this was a great movie player for my tiny college room! I think mine also came with Wing Commander IV with its FMV scenes in MPEG 2 vs. the lousy codec they were using at the time.

Lon Seidman

Oh the plight and anger of getting IDE and power cables into those tight compartments! Hehe! ^_^ And that Creative Encore sound... <3

Anders Enger Jensen

I was bored and just thinking about taking a nap. Then here comes Clint droppin' content! Im up now!

Jason Dupree

Oh man, a Voodoo AND dxr2 card in the same system, haha. So many passthrough cables.

LGR

I had this. I remember going to Blockbuster and finding they had no clue when they'd start renting DVDs. There was a brief time when I had both a voodoo 2 and a dxr2 card. It was a mess. I remember all the games that supported it that were impossible to run later. I think fan patches came out for some games but I never did get the DVD version of Grand Inquisitor running on modern tech.
