LGR - Year 2000 CompUSA & Best Buy Catalogs

Since my Toys R Us catalog video went over well, let's see how this one goes :)

LGR - Year 2000 CompUSA & Best Buy Catalogs

Comments

You're the only dude in the entire world who I would watch and enjoy flick through old computing catalogues, and that's why you get US $5 a month (adjusted for exchange rate) from me, keep it up, mate!

I love your long pieces on stuff like this. Also the calculators made me laugh SO hard.

Eric Christopher

The funniest thing about computers from late 90s early 2000s are the "speaker ears" on those crt monitors.

Ah man the memories. 2000 was the time I earned my first money ... the possibilities were unlimited....:-)

As far as mp3 players go, I still depend on my Creative Zen . People are so confused when they see this thick credit card shaped device. But, for a 5-6 year old device, it has a built in speaker, 32GB with SD expansion card slot and the battery lasts about 6-8 hours. Being able to just drag and drop podcasts into it, is so convenient!

Steve Martin

I used AMD from 1997 to until a few months ago, they still make some great processors at good price! Moved onto Intel though, they seem to have the upper hand for gaming.

LGR

Haha, the first PC I built on my own was a Duron-based one as well, I think it was 1.3GHz! That lasted me a while too, at least up until the Half-Life 2 and Doom 3 days

LGR

Fixed the titles at the end, thanks!

LGR

I've got some Radio Shack catalogs to show in a future video, and man, the audio gear is orgasmic

LGR

I've only ever played the first D for the 3DO and wasn't terribly impressed, is the second worth trying?

LGR

They are seriously awesome.

LGR

Queens of the Stone Age are the best.

Justin Dotson

Oh wow, that's crazy. At least, it sounds crazy over here over where that stuff reigned supreme! Really is a misleading practice though.

LGR

The professional server stuff of theirs I've used has been really solid, yeah. I used to have this massive Proliant server, it was awesome. Wish I still had it!

LGR

I remember having some real trouble with Firewire on my MiniDV camera, ugh. Very fast interface, but wow it was a pain

LGR

Glad it still brought back some memories even overseas :)

LGR

It really was the worst I've ever owned, argh. I think the PSU eventually went on mine as well, we just tossed it in a bin

LGR

Time isn't fair, argh

LGR

I mean, it was a joke... but okay :P

LGR

Best Buy and several other stores of that nature are able to stick around because they have online storefronts typically with BETTER inventory than their store locations, plus you can buy online and then pick up your order at one of their stores if free shipping isn't possible. They stuck around because they found a way to adapt in the ever-changing online marketplace. :B

Kris Asick

Soooo I had a random thought yesterday that went along the lines of "What if Clint did another catalog video and it was on an old Best Buy catalog or something?" Um... well... imagine my shock when I saw the email alert from Patreon with this video later that day, haha. I apparently have a skill for predicting your next videos (though my psychic abilities missed the Comp USA part, darn)... I should put that on my resume. :P But yeah... generic PCs from 2000s are generic. At least the Sonys and iMacs brought some variety. And with people our age, 16 years ago just doesn't seem like... 16 years ago. It all went by in a blur!

Lindsay Michelle

The computer that you're talking about, I work on once. I had to replace the power switch, the fan, and power supply. What a piece of junk!

Nick Schafer

Had the same Compaq you're talking about around the 8 minute mark. Oh god, the memories! Had the screen with the side-mounted ugly speakers and all. Can't remember which model I had of the computer though, not the most expensive one of 'em, that I remember. I really like these videos, even if I live in Sweden. So we didn't have these perticular stores around. But I remember a lot of the things that are in the catalouges ofc. Keep it up LGR!

I could never seem to get Firewire working perfectly reliably. There was always some glitch that would be a total pain in the ass, especially with audio interfaces and image capture, it would always not recognise the device, glitch, drop frames, etc. I was the happiest guy when USB 2.0 replaced it. Ah, the memories.

Ant Field

I would have to say yes it is possible to stop living and end up dead from Nostalgia LOL!

Ah.. nostalgia.. I'm sorry to hear you had such a bad experience with Compaq. My experience with Compaq, however with their professional branch, was very positive. Built like a tank , very easy to service and except for the Quantum Fireball drives living up to their name, very reliable. That said, I also loved Windows ME so it could be me.

himem.sys

Is it possible to die from nostalgia? I might be the first case

mavrick

The thing that really sticks out to me is how they headline the after-rebates-and-bundled-shit-price and put the real price in the fine print. In Australia, that's super illegal!

RetroSwim

Firewire! In 2012, someone stole my iPod Gen1, which only had a Firewire interface. I think the worst part about that, is that they probably threw the thing away because who the crummy heck had Firewire in 2012?

Sanguine Games

The 90's and the 00's the war between AMD and Intel processors. Which was your favorite at the time? Is AMD even still around? Something for a Tech Tale?

Druid Donagh MacBran

Had one of the iMacs in 2000 when I was a kid (13), you can't believe how envious I was of people with TNT2s, GeForces and Voodoos. Not to mention having a Windows machine that had a large array of great games on it. Using Mac OS 9 was a real trial, and I didn't get away from it for the next 3 years until I just went ahead and built my own computer (AMD Duron 1.2ghz, TNT2 Pro, a 40gb drive I got for Christmas, some other stuff I just don't remember any more), what a life changing moment.

Leigh Beattie

Wrong videos and title for the preview screen? :P Anyway, nice video. Have a Sony Vaio laptop next to me, with Windows XP on it. From 2002/2003. Should probably get it working again...

Curus Keel

Man, that was freaking cool to see. I remember looking at a lot of catalogs too as a kid. Audio gear especially always intrigued me the most in those. Best Buy sure has changed a lot since the 2000s too. Never had the luxury of seeing anything other than it or Circuit City.

ReeseRiverson

Oh man, I got so excited when I saw D2 for Dreamcast advertised on the back of the CompUSA flyer. Dreamcast was awesome and has a special place in my heart, and I really like D2.

The system at 4:34 into the video looks like another (older) HP Pavilion. Reminds me of a ~1998 model I used to have that was given to me a while back. It was a Pentium MMX 233MHz, had (I think) about 32MB RAM, and the biggest points of interest was the massive 8GB Quantum Bigfoot TX hard drive that came with it as well as the equally massive case. Makes me wish I still had it, or something like it... And there's the printer we used to have at 9:56.

Sutekh94

Ahh okay, I knew it had been a little bit of time since I'd seen one!

LGR

FYI Sony Vaios were discontinued in 2014 or 2015 :). I am typing this from a Sony Vaio though...

Heh, yeah around that time, the dream only lasted so long with PCs moving forward as fast as they were

LGR

Brings back memories about my first PC which I got in 1992. (Not my first computer by any means, though.) Was a 386 DX 40 with 4 megs ram, 105 meg hard drive with sound blaster pro, SVGA monitor, 1 speed CD ROM drive and three button mouse. It was for the mere price of AUD2500.00 (which was cheaper cause I got it at a computer store rather than one of the big name stores.) It was my dream PC. That dream sure went out the window fast, though.
