LGR - Doom 2016 Review

Man, this was fun to put together. Mainly because the single-player itself was so darned satisfying to play and re-watch the footage!

LGR - Doom 2016 Review

This game basically lived up to every last one of my expectations except for the developer's mode glitch. Playing on Ultra-Violence is significantly more reminiscent of Nightmare.

Eric Christopher

I enjoyed all the doom games, played the original as a kid and It's still one of my all time favorites.... But I honestly didn't like this at all... the constant melee glory kill thingy ma-bobs I hated with a passion, But It's nice to see original fans enjoying It and taking a lotmore from It than I could. Top review as always mate, Love the humor Keep It up!

Actually... yes, so goes the speculation! <a href="http://www.pcworld.com/article/2690724/why-windows-10-isnt-named-9-windows-95-legacy-code.html" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">http://www.pcworld.com/article/2690724/why-windows-10-isnt-named-9-windows-95-legacy-code.html</a>

"Glad you like it! It is from Windows 9x though :)" huh, maybe that's why we went from Win8 to Win10. We already had 9. Microsoft needs to learn to count

SuperBunnyBun

Personally I play the multiplayer a lot. I know it's not as "Doom" as many would hope it would be but I liked it in the beta and I like it in the final game. Might be because I am more "grown" into modern multiplayer shooters but I honestly don't mind how it plays. It's far more oldschool than something like CoD or even Halo to be fair so I think it's still a ton of fun.

Alyxx the Rat

Hopefully so. Crossing fingers there's a bit of room for them to expand that and revise it.

Rob Caporetto

Interesting... It's possible the devs are overestimating the minimum hardware just to keep the number of support inquiries down, though a 960 is going to outperform a 660 in terms of advanced features. The most prominent things High/Ultra settings seem to do compared to Low/Medium are dynamic shadows, fragment/pixel shader effects, and reflections, all of which are things a 960 will do far better than a 660, so while I imagine the low setting on a 660 will be similar to a 960, the ultra setting on a 960 will be FAR better than on a 660.

Actually, it's not that bad :D <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aXRTbLCJH40" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aXRTbLCJH40</a>

LGR

Good to know! Though... I have to wonder how ugly the game would look on the lowest detail settings... couldn't POSSIBLY be worse than the original Doom in low detail mode. Actually, I wonder how many people even remember that was a thing? ;)

Kris Asick

Was tempting to do that for the Duke 3D review!

LGR

Balls yeah it is

LGR

Haha, glad they're going over well. I thought they fit the theme nicely.

LGR

Glad you like it! It is from Windows 9x though :)

LGR

Thank you! And yeah, I've never been huge into Doom multiplayer either, but it still would be nice to have a more solid option for it. Oh well, maybe SnapMap will help a bit in that regard

LGR

Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed!

LGR

Hehe, Doom cleanup would be an awesome addition to the VCD series.

LGR

Actually, I've got a friend who has played through it with a 660! Granted, the settings were on low, but it was quite playable. Still probably worth waiting for a discount though, heh

LGR

Aw yeah, at least give the original a shot! It's so good.

LGR

This game is awesomesauce! :D

Alyxx the Rat

i love your information dialog windows

mega

Another excellent review!

Chris Roy

Mmm, good to know that the meaty giblets still fly handily in Doom. :3

The Enforcer

I would have laughed my ass off if you did the whole review in the DukeNukem voice...

I've been playing the campaign a couple of hours after the midnight launch and it was FANTASTIC! It sucks that the Multiplayer isn't as good though. Perhaps there are some mods out there who can make some really kickass maps on SnapMap...and some really clever mods might make a 2016 version of The Sky May Be.

I love the little win3.1 information box in the corner. a very adorable touch

SuperBunnyBun

I'll have to wait till it comes down in price if multiplayer sucks. The regular campaign looks great tho.

Justin Dotson

Hot damn. I was pretty skeptical about this, but it actually looks like it's gonna be great - and your comparisons to Wolfenstein: TNO pretty much sealed that. Truth be told, I know Doom holds a special place for a lot of peeps in Multiplayer, but I never really played it, so don't have the nostalgia for it. I'm going to have to pencil in an upgrade or something soon so I can actually check it out. Awesome review man… awesome review.

Rob Caporetto

Slick. One of the best game reviews I've watched in a long time.

Ant Field

I just know I'm going to get called in to clean that up in Viscera cleanup detail :(

I checked out the system requirements... I'm actually just shy on the GPU minimum, with a 660 GTX instead of a 670. Ah well, I'll probably still end up getting it eventually but definitely going to wait for a discount. :B

Kris Asick

Wooo! This came out earlier than I thought it would! BTW, I adore your little old-school Windows Information popup that's been in your recent videos. I keep forgetting to tell you that, and now I finally remembered to, haha. I usually don't go for first person games at all, really, but they've piqued my interest more as of late. After I watched your Doom video, I realized that I probably missed out on playing a classic from back in the day. This game looks freaking awesome, too. Love the metal music that goes with the game, and killing demons looks really satisfying. I don't think I'd pay 60 dollars for it (and I'm not too big on multiplayer shooters or much of multiplayer anything, and plus you say that mode is lackluster anyways), but I think I'll pick up the original Doom on GOG for now and possibly buy this game on sale in the future. :)

Lindsay Michelle

True. I think it'll have more of an impact than DOOM 3 did for just the campaign alone. This is much like Spec Ops: The Line in which the campaign is the main star and the multiplayer is tacked on. Restricted moddability is a shame too, especially since Bethesda of all companies should know the benefits of giving powerful modding tools to the community by now.

Curus Keel

Good multiplayer and mods kept it going, yeah. With this one lacking in both areas, I do wonder what the long-term story will look like.

LGR

Perfect

LGR

Wow, this looks to be a lovely game. Shame that multiplayer got shafted, it was a major reason for the original Doom's popularity and long-lasting appeal. If it was going to be outsourced, why couldn't the closely-related Raven Software be the pick for it? I mean, they are under Activison's umbrella, but I'd at least have tried to get to them.

Curus Keel

A pic that sums up my review of DOOM (not my pic, got it from the DOOM sibreddit): <a href="http://i.imgur.com/RxcVK50.jpg" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">http://i.imgur.com/RxcVK50.jpg</a>

Been waiting for this, awesome.
