LGR - The Way Things Work for Windows 3.1

I seriously freaking loved this software (and book!) as a kid, so it's high time I talked about it. Dug out my boxed copy while moving, so here we go!

LGR - The Way Things Work for Windows 3.1

Comments

I was quite surprised after listening to Ready Player One and Armada, Ernest Cline's newest book. Wil does both of those (kind of trippy because Wil is actually mentioned in Ready Player One). I was surprised because on top of some stellar voice work in general, Wil can do voices and impressions like nobody's business. At least that's what I thought.

Kevin

You know, I was watching the James May series "The Reassembler" and thinking it'd be a lot of fun to do my own videos like that. We'll see :)

LGR

You're very welcome, John!

LGR

Agreed, I really think that an updated version would do well

LGR

I do not have that one, but I absolutely remember it. There was also the Castle one, that one was surprisingly graphic

LGR

It was quite a refreshing thing to cover something I've got a history with AND enjoy, hehe. Especially after Leeper.

LGR

I can definitely see a young Kris diving into this! Lots of enjoyably-presented technical details to dive into

LGR

Pinball Science is a super cool piece of software as well, hoping to cover it in the future :)

LGR

Man, that TV series was awesome. I think I've only seen the first episode as well!

LGR

I've seen a few websites for kids that try and capture some of that, but yeah, it's really not the same as we had in the '90s

LGR

I know there was a UK release, but yeah, not sure of a Swedish one!

LGR

Thank you! And yeah, this is just a phenomenal way to show kids scientific concepts. I wish this kinda thing was still prevalent today. Or maybe it is and I haven't seen it.

LGR

Haha, yep! I'll be doing my best to cut that down as I fill it up

LGR

Can't be, since clearly MINE is better ;)

LGR

I really wanna read/listen to that. I've listened to several narrated by Wil, quite enjoyable!

LGR

This thing is awesome! I am going to figure out how to get this running. This is like Wikipedia but better. And to quote the book I just read, "This Wikipedia thing could have been compiled by idiots for all I know." This encyclopedia does not look to have been compiled by idiots. If you haven't read it, Redshirts is a great novel by John Scalzi. Yes the title is a reference to the "poor bastards in red shirts" on Star Trek and the audiobook is read by none other than Wil Wheaton.

Kevin

"my nostalgia trumps all logic" - ah, so that is why my collection is better than other people stupid junk.

mavrick

Was this recorded in your new, empty house? I can tell from the echoes, and from having been in empty houses quite a lot in my time. Edit: Hah, I should watch to the end before commenting.

RetroSwim

I'm certainly not familiar with the book, but that, that is how you put together an edutainment package. It feels like the interactive medium is perfect for it - just because of the animation possibilities, which you wouldn't necessarily get from a static page. Wonderfully put together review (and I didn't really notice the echo of the new place either :D)

Rob Caporetto

This is so cool! I waaant one !

Christian Meneses

Wish I knew about this when I grew up. But on the other hand it doesn't seem like there were a Swedish release of the game and my importing skills were quite limited in '94.

MrMattan

I miss interactive encyclopedias! The internet made them obsolete and it hasn't been the same since. I wish there was some way I could experience something like that again, but in a whole new way that can appeal more to this generation.

Caleb Bott

Thanks for covering this! I grew up reading some of The Way Things Work books and the first episode of the animated TV Series, but I never played with (or heard of) this program, thanks to being too young to have experienced that era of computers.

Harry Thornton

I had this when I got my first pc back in 94. It came with one of those bundles that they used to package with the pc. I was in my mid 20s then but still got a lot of enjoyment out of it just for the way it was presented.

Bryndal Dwyre

Oh man! My Junior High had a copy of The Way Things Work Pinball! Great game!

Ian Guebert

Somehow I missed this series of books/applications when I was a kid... If I had known about them I definitely would've gotten a kick out of them back then! :B

Kris Asick

I am happy you are reviewing something you actually like a lot for this year's Edutainment Month instead of those... erm... lovely games from earlier. I am not surprised you adore the book and the CD game. I still have my copy of the book in the basement. :) Not sure where they sell that "Death, Taxes, and Awkward Conversations with In-Laws" book, though. ;) Anyways, keep on tinkering and making awesome videos, Clint. :)

Lindsay Michelle

Do you have Stephen Biesty's Incredible Cross-Sections STOWAWAY? I thought it was a great edutainment title about 18th-19th century warships. I have the old CD somewhere I think.

Douglas Holmes

This looks like something they coould convert to iPad and sell for 10$. Very cool.

Michael Matzat

Thanks for a blast from the past, LGR!

John Kinsman

Nostalgia Overload! I remember messing with this so many times as a kid.

David Green

I'd like to see a video of you taking something electronic apart.

Christian
