Space management is absolutely the biggest headache. Space to store things, space to set up the computers to play them, space to still work while showing it off, etc

It's off topic but looking at all those shelves of games and being a PC collector myself with always limited resources I find myself being curious. do you ever stress about space management? PC collecting is probably without a doubt the least efficient game collecting out there especially if you factor in the PC's themselves. I barley had room for the collection when I lived in a home let alone now with an apartment where I must agonize over every placement and cram everything I can in boxes in the closet I've considered selling off the games in genres I play the least (flight sims, fighting). Thankfully I've always cohabited with someone that tolerates my hobbies else things would be way worse.

Just to be "that guy": You're right, the Japanese on the box isn't commonly used and wouldn't be read as Daikatana.

Yeah totally. Once you learn the quirks of the AI, it becomes pretty fun in my opinion. But with the hype going on, I can see why the game was a disappointment. In my opinion it is far from as bad as people make it out to be.

Also to add, I am thankful for The Indie Box at least. Such a great service shall not be forgotten!

Actually, I remember the even earlier registration pop-ups on DOS games, notably Interplay-published stuff, where your only options were "Register Now" and "Ask Me Later", and only on the third time you selected "Ask Me Later" would it FINALLY give you the option to "Never Register". :|
Incidentally, when I got my SNES two decades ago, my father had actually sent in the registration card... which ultimately led to my getting that Donkey Kong Country VHS tape hyping the thing up, so it's not that registering this stuff was bad, it was just annoying. :P

It'd be great if they gave two options. Standard of getting the game in a box, no extra rewards for those just wanting the box, and one that offers the box with many other rewards like we've seen. Heck, signed even for the costlier version.
Like that Descent Underground one I had linked you via email earlier. I wouldn't mind if a "standard" affordable option wasn't signed by anyone.

Mechwarrior 2 is such a legend. I remember when it was delayed repeatedly, and people were wondering if it would become vaporware, then doubting it would be any good once it finally came out. Boy were we wrong!

That is more or less my take on it as well! Where Romero and his team were trying to go with the concept is so forward-thinking for the late 90's. Shame that even with the patches it wasn't quite ironed out to the level of the hype.

That's the translation of the word daikatana, yes! But I am referring to the Japanese lettering on the box, above the title. I've just seen it referred to many times as "pseudo-kanji" as it's supposedly not quite legit, with it saying more along the lines of "dai-To" instead of "dai-katana".

Next time I should talk about some of the pre-Mechwarrior games from the Battletech series. Those featured AMAZING painted artwork on the covers. Something so wonderful about hand-drawn mechs.

I'm thankful certain Kickstarter games provide proper big box editions of their games now! It's just a shame they cost so much to get, due to being a reward rather than a normal edition.

Absolutely. Which is why I'm fully supporting companies like Indie Box and Gamer's Edition, due to their releasing wonderfully-made boxes for digital-only games!
Heh, you know what I don't miss even more than registration cards? On-line registration pop-ups after installing a game circa 1999.

And evil, don't forget evil! Evil is awesome, in cover art form.
Really not sure how many more parts I'll do, but I have at least one more ready to record immediately.

It seems like the theme of this video was demons and cyberpunk. :P
But man, how many parts of this series are you gonna have? Do you even know yet? Technically, you could keep on for a while, considering how many physical games you own... but really, I don't mind at all! Keep them coming! :)

I commented recently in a video of mine how I'm not going to miss those somewhat annoying registration cards as we slowly move into the fully-digital age of games, but cover art? That's definitely something that's going to be missed. :(

Man, there really are a lot of great artists out there that put in some great work into these boxes.
Makes me really miss having games come in big boxes.

That Mechwarrior 2 box. I always loved the design, but darn, it just shatters the illusion knowing it's just a composite of rendered art.
Then again, I guess that style is never going to feel as vivid as a well painted piece.

By the way, the Japanese on the Daikatana box says "Big Sword". Which is actually what Daikatana means. So its not gibberish :p

I actually wrote a positive review of Daikatana because in my opinion, a lot of what it tried to do was way ahead of the curve. Combining FPS with RPG elements was something that, at that point, was not common and just the amount of variety and diversity in the level design and the fact it tried to be a co-op FPS before this was even a thing (nowadays the Borderlands games have pretty much made this concept mainstream). In my opinion the problem with Daikatana is that it was just too far ahead of its time, the technology used wasn't really there for it to work entirely but I have a huge amount of respect for what Romero tried to do with the game and you can tell he wanted to push the genre forward instead of growing stale in the same Doom formula that id was just rehashing.

Very nice covers ! Mechwarrior 2 is 'my favorite, not to mention my first and most played Mech game. The music is especially memorable. :)
