Woo, computing! A Thank You.

First off, thanks so much for the continued support on Patreon! Expanding LGR this year with nicer equipment, up to date software, and new shows has been awesome. And it's only gonna get better it seems! But yeah, I just wanted to let you all know something notable your patron dollars have been used for recently. After much research on "desktop replacement" laptops, I got a nice deal on this MSI GT60 laptop so I could make content somewhere other than my tiny computer room. Granted, it's a comfy little room and my 3-year-old desktop is still sweet for editing... but it's nice to be able to relocate every so often, and perhaps visit friends and family and still be able to work. That way, I don't have to destroy myself working way ahead and making a bunch of videos all at once to prepare for trips! The previous four LGR episodes have all been made on the MSI laptop, and it'll be helping me with many more. It's an awesome machine and I've been super happy with it, not having to skimp out on computing power in favor of portability. So thank you so very much for making this possible. And I wish you all a Happy Halloween! If you're in one of the areas in the US right now with awful weather, stay safe :) -Clint/LGR

Thanks, you too!

Happy Halloween, Clint! Stay awesome!

Congratulations! Soon you'll be enjoying the odd but sweet comfort of doing almost all the exact same things you do on your desktop on the couch of your friends. Well, editing-wise anyway.. I use both my PC and Macbook Air for photo-editing and it's kinda mentally refreshing to change your surroundings once in a while, both OS-wise and IRL.

Glad you're happy with your new device. It's good to see that the patreon support helps you to get things done easier - never doubted you'd put the money to good use!

icezolation

Wow is so awesome!!!

Being a laptop guy myself, I'd say : "welcome to the laptop club !" ;-) I'm glad I helped you, even a little bit, getting a computer that doesn't obligate you to stay in the same room all day long. I really understand how much it is more convenient. So... are you going to install Archlinux on that sweet computer ? just kidding ! ;-) Speaking of desktop computers, here is what I've built recently (had no Internet for a week, so...) : - AMD Athon Thunderbird CPU (1,3 Ghz) - SOLTEK SL-75KAV motherboard with Onboard AC'97 audio and Onboard legacy audio emulation (SoundBlaster, OPL synth, and MPU-401 emulation, with a 220H/DMA 1/IRQ 5 (configurable) config)) - 160 GB hard drive (UDMA 100) - 2x DVD-RW optical drives (UDMA... something) - ATI Radeon 8500 (AGP4X) - 512 MB SDRAM PC133 - 1360x768 LCD screen - Cable for analog audio CD play installed between the master IDE optical drive and the motherboard - PS/2 optical mouse with wheel and Microsoft PS/2 keyboard - Cooler Master 460W power supply - Windows 98 SE (French) - 4.1 surround sound system (logitech) - 3DFX voodoo 2 - Realtek RL8029AS ethernet PCI card I could not install my Sound Blaster AWE64 on the ISA port even when the OnBoard audio/legacy emu was disabled (kernel panic every time). I hope the SoundBlaster emu really works this time. I hope I'll be able to finally finish MechWarrior 3 on it, and play some late DOS games like Screamer Rally / Screamer 2 with their 3DFX patch installed. \o/ Anyway, enough rambling for now... ;-)

Oh and these are the specs, though with 16GB RAM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152557

LGR

Haha, well it certainly helps pay for some out-of-date equipment too. Just ordered a replacement 486 motherboard today, hoping to complete a computer so I can review it!

LGR

Thank you! And yeah, not dying and pissing off people I care about is quite worthwhile :P

LGR

I hated the idea too for the longest time. When I started having these needs/desires though, and found that I could easily get a machine with equal or greater specs than my desktop, it made a lot of sense! And with a nice mouse plugged in and set up on a nice table or desk, it sure beats lugging around a desktop to do work with :)

LGR

That's awesome! While I love your videos, I hate the idea of you killing yourself and pissing off your friends and family to make them. I'm so glad that your able to do so much with Patreon. Your videos are awesome. I am really digging the new Tech Tales series. And I can't wait for "Season 2" of Thrifts. I was thinking that somebody should do a parody of Macklemore's Thrift Shop song to go with the series.

Kevin

Nice! Me personally, I hate the idea of completely replacing a desktop with a laptop (which I'm just saying, I know that's not what you've done), but I understand the convenience factor of being able to take your computing with you to a temporary location so you can set up and be productive while not at home. :B Though I do like the idea of mini-laptops that are only a few inches wide for quick and easy note-taking, information lookup, etc., though they seem to have been supplanted by tablets now. :P

Kris Asick

Wait, I thought we were paying out to have OUT-OF-DATE equipment? Shouldn't you be putting these videos together on a 486SX running Xing Mpeg under Win3.1 or something? Srsly, though -- stay awesome. Your CP/M vid was one of your best evar.

Norman Rafferty

That they are, and I like the adjustments you can make to enhance certain types of audio. Useful stuff!

LGR

Awesome! I own a couple of MSI laptops myself, I really like their laptops. The Dynaudio speakers are pretty great too. :)

ReeseRiverson

I always kinda wanted to ask you how you use the funds, but I'm not the kind of person who asks things like that. I figure if someone wants to tell you, they will. If not, then you aren't supposed to know. Besides, the show has been kicking a lot of ass lately so I was always satisatisfied with that.

Matt Cain

Well... I hope you like snow? Haha.

Lindsay Michelle

It's better than where I was, weather-wise! But alas, still expecting snow.

LGR

Yay for not killing yourself with video making before going on vacation! That's always good. Awesome laptop! I admit I was tempted to get a laptop like that since mine is getting older, but I felt like it was out of my price range, and I think I should invest in a desktop first, especially since my boyfriend and I will probably go in on one together. And yeah, that icky Halloween weather... it was a rain/snow mix in Michigan today... glad I didn't have to walk around in that for too long. Bet you're happy to be back in the South. :P

Lindsay Michelle

Haha, yeah I had a slight pang of buyer's remorse when I saw the Cherry MX thing going on with the GT80. But whatever, mechanical switches or not this thing is awesome :)

LGR

Sweet! Those MSI laptops are definitely my pick for the best bang-for-buck out there. Good build quality, good performance, good pricing. Glad it's gonna be helping with the new episodes, good to see the Patreon funding going to good use.

Runefox

Love it. What're the specs? Also, when I read that, I thought you said the GT80 and got ultra jealous. now i'm just super jealous ;)
