I pay 2$ per month and I don't get a look of videos before friday...

Teemu Pekkanen

They have a long way to go before I will invest in it.

Well not fully correct. The Virtual Boy was technologically a 3D headset not a Virtual Reality Headset because it had no body motion controls (or whatever the exact term is) also they had technology in the 90s like oculus rift well not exactly like it, but also even 5 year before oculus rift was a thing there where actually Virtual Reality headsets and also gloves (You know like the power glove just working) that you could easily compare with oculus rift. Thing is, I was not at all talking about privat niche businesses, I am talking about big company niche nothing privat at all, where they set up entire virtual reality rooms with gloves and goggles that cost more than you could ever afford. The thing where oculus rift is kinda a pioneer is on the privat sector, especially for gaming. So they don't create Virtual Reality they make it affordable. You know they just talked allot of brag about that it was almost forgotten the usual bullshit. The real thing to honer and why it needs so long is that you have to built it to an affordable price for a very critical custom. And that is what I wanted to say. Well here you go, yeah their virtual reality rooms look pretty wierd if you ask me: http://a2.media.3ds.com/fileadmin/PRODUCTS/3DVIA/3DVIAVirtools/showcase/psa2.jpg http://a1.media.3ds.com/fileadmin/PRODUCTS/3DVIA/3DVIAVirtools/showcase/psa3.jpg http://www.3ds.com/customer-stories/single/university-of-patras-lms/ Seems to have different systems. But everything is expensive, they don't write prices because they know that their custom don't bother about it. And than there is the NASA crap which is even closer to oculus rift, Wanna know what that cost? I think millions. I only pointed out it existed so the hype is a big to high. But seeing it for the consumer market is pretty awesome. I mean seriously I am craping my pans just to think about it. Don't think I am an oculus hater. I really see it coming. No sir I love oculus rift and what they do.

The pile of cables on top of/around your keyboard in the background.... Looking at it at first, I was like... Is that a black LaserBeak figure? Or a plane of some kind? Robotech?? Oh no. Its just a pile of cables. I can't be the only one... I hope..

There is also the fact that Oculus has a VERY small team, and a very low... well it started off with a very low budget. Sony on the other hand has a comparatively unlimited budget and a much larger team. Thus, they get a lot more done, a lot quicker. And while I am aware that they have had VR technology for a few decades (even things like the Virtual Boy), they have never had anything even close to this. That is why it is taking so long to deliver. This in currently in uncharted territory. Trust me, if the VR Tech that is available now (even from the private niche businesses), Oculus would have found out about it and approached them, or would have been approached. Even more so, now that they have been bought by Facebook. (Don't you think that these companies would want a piece of that pie?) Unfortunately, they have nothing to offer, so Oculus in on their own. I have also heard it expressed by some people that Sony and Oculus should team up, and I pray that never happens. I want this "new" market to become as diverse as the automobile industry. I want the option to buy a Mercedes VR or a Toyota VR. Each unique, and each with their own quirks and features. And if the only two companies currently pioneering these technologies join forces, it will only take that much longer for anyone else to join in. :)

What most people seem not to know is that the way from the game to the working world like engineering or medicine is pretty much bringing people a tool they already have. Even my father has virtual reality goggles at work, and from what I am hearing they aren't the greatest tool for engineering but they are much used. And are extremely good to sleep behind them. Nasa already uses them for more than a dacade I think. So yeah oculus really just bring it to another level. Because it is allot more convincing that it is real. But I gotta be honest if you are engineer you have to use your imagination anyway there is no need to get the illusion to be really there but maybe they do already I never used one of those. Also they made it cheap as fuck, I don't wanna know what the VR Goggles in my fathers company cost, remember it was from a very special market. I think most people don't know that because who really knows about things that are way out of range. I mean it surprised me too that in my fathers company they use VR Goggles. So yeah I don't like this bullcrap with "What can do so much more than games with oculus rift" because we already do it. Also why was sony so fast with their goggles? Because well two things they could see how it has to look like at the oculus rift and using their own VR technology. I guess they just want to hype it as much as possible. I mean ask yourself what sounds better. I don't care because I am really excited to see this product. And it will ad more to the gaming world.

Just need to give them time to find the bugs in the new SDK which added a lot of new features in software and the new hardware. I left mine alone after the first day I got it and now 2-3 weeks later, some of the updated demos are working MUCH better. Many of them work without issue in Direct HMD mode which is far superior to Extended HMD. In a few more weeks we'll see many more demos running flawlessly on the DK2 and I'm sure Oculus will fix some of the core issues in the new SDK sooner than later as well. If you haven't tried it, check the dev forums for the Quake 2 VR release. This was incredible. No Direct HMD support yet, but soon hopefully. Even still, the best demo I've tried yet!

Ok, I admit, I laughed when you first strapped that huge thing to your head (and gave a thumbs up :P). But your enthusiasm is radiating when you talk about this product, even with your criticisms of what should be improved. I'm glad you enjoy it so much! Makes me want to try it, even though I'm afraid it'll crush my tiny head by its sheer size... is the Oculus Rift heavy or not really?

Lindsay Michelle

Wow, I'd never heard of Cosmic Smash. What an interesting game.

Keith McCaffety

I had virtually no interest in the Oculus Rift prior to this video. However... with these new additions to the hardware and software I think they've really got something going here. It'll be neat to see just how far they take this thing. :o

Kris Asick

But man, I'd love to see one of these in action. I wonder how far this thing will advance by next year. :)

ReeseRiverson

So excited to watch this :) I just read that Quake 1 was updated for DK2 by the way.

SNDTST

I keep wanting to think of it as Donkey Kong 2. Lol
