LGR - World Class Leader Board - DOS PC Game Review

Comments

After watching the Test Drive 4 video, I immediately thought of "Mean 18", Accolade's golf game which came out the same year as Leaderboard. My dad had Mean 18 on his XT clone system when I was a wee toddler. At that age I didn't understand anything about clubs, the arrows on the putting green, and all that technical stuff, all I knew was hold space to fill the bar, let go at the top, and hit it again just before the gauge goes into the red bit. The man swings and the ball goes... places... Repeat that enough times and eventually the ball goes into the hole! Ah the ignorance of youth!

Nice :D

First game I remember... PC-wise, probably Wolfenstein 3D. Console-wise, probably Super Mario Bros.

Dizzy

Totally should! Really is something special about older golf games, it's weird

LGR

And btw. I loved and still love Golfgames I think back then I had a Microsoft Golf. I bet it is flying trough our house. Maybe I find it again and than I check it out again.

Even I try as hard as I can I think the first game I remember was Jazz Jackrabbit 2. I think even Addy Junior came later (It is like the German answer to jumpstart (I think it is only in german but if you ever find it, just check it out anyway)) I mean not even the dos games came before. I think Digger was my first dos game. But I love JJ2 it runs still without any combability mode or administrator settings. I ever wanted to test it on Win8 but till Win7 it just runs and runs. They just programmed it right I guess, but I bet it was more a fluke that they picked the one way to program it that it never dies, figuratively.

Ezydenias

That should be interesting. I'll be looking forward into watching whenever you decide to cover this. :)

Oh yeah, I remember freezing many a Windows 3.1 session with those PCM PC speaker drivers! Was awesome to be able to do though, still wanna feature these PC speaker innovations in a video sometime

LGR

Yeah, the only innovative golf games I can think of are those that add some kind of gimmick (Ninja Golf, Outlaw Golf, Links LS eXtreme) or add a lot of customization and/or a progression system (The Golf Club, Powerstar Golf, even some of the newer PGA Tour series). The base gameplay can only change so much I guess, but yeah, the newer console ones I prefer with the analog stick method. Man, I've played more golf games than I realized, haha.

LGR

Wouldn't be surprised!

LGR

Hehe, glad you thought so

LGR

Oh my. I have just remember when I was able to play music on Windows 3.1 with the PC speaker. I remember it worked very nicely, except for the fact Windows froze each times I tried to play music and had to reset. It didn't matter since it didn't took much for my 5 years old self to have fun around these things.

Pandatective

Loved it when they were in full color and had classy illustrations and extra stuff within

LGR

Ah yes, have still never gotten around to playing MS Golf very much, but I'd like to sometime!

LGR

This game really intrigues me, as I only ever played Microsoft Golf and a few of the later Tiger Woods games, from like 2008 on. The level of detail that they had even back then is very cool. The lack of innovation in golf games since then is not so cool. Basically every game has always been exactly the same, you aim, choose a club, set your power and try to hit it straight. The console versions were always better to me because they had a better (read: different) control scheme where your power was based on how you moved the analog stick, rather than the "click 3" method, but that was really the only difference. Have you ever seen a golf game that was really innovative? Oh, and I don't count the Worms games as legitimate Golf, but I have only ever played a few minutes before rage quitting because of awkward issues on my PC.

Pretty sure that "I think you hit the tree, Jim" quote is in every Access golf game, right through the Microsoft era to Links 2003.

RetroSwim

That was fun! "AWWWWWWW!"

Keith McCaffety

I love the way manuals we're done back then. It's a shame they're practically dead since the invention of in-game tutorials. Well done, great video!

Heartwork79

Cool review :) i remember my first golf game whas on windows 3.1 or 3.11 maby 3.0 not sure thoe but i think it whas microsoft Golf/MS golf it had 256 color or maby more not sure.but maby you can review that game? :D

StigDesign1

First instance of a dongle i heard of was in relation to JAWS or some other screen reading software. Priblem with accessibility programs is the user base was tiny so they over chargex and used odd drm.

Jessie Cook

Yup, same idea!

LGR

Real sound reminds me of a pc speaker sound driver for win 3.1 i downloaded from aol 2.5 back in the day before i installed a sound card.

Jessie Cook

I'll take any excuse to say dongle in a video. My DRM videos were great for that, hehe

LGR

Hehe, well I appreciate the vote of confidence

LGR

Gotta love those individually-loading trees. Also, "dongle" is a funny word.

Lindsay Michelle

i feel like i could watch you review anything and i'd probably be entertained xD

Jason Potter

No kidding. With a new game coming out, and the mass amount of my subs that constantly demand more Sims, expect lots more too! But til then, it's time for me to indulge the crap out of my DOS gaming love.

LGR

"Well. It's that time again, time for you to finally NOT do another Sims review."
