I'm on the fence over if old man did it alone or not I think it is possible as long as he had a decent common sense idea of physics and how to use it to his benefit like use leverage to his advantage, how to lessen sliding friction etc.

I think he sacrificed himself for his wife (not for Cathy, that doesn't make sense), knowing that he wouldn't live much longer, and maybe already contemplating suicide.

I don't discount that he may have gone and killed her with a hammer, but his physical condition... his wife or the friend had to have been an accessory after the fact because I just can't believe that dude could've done the cleanup his self. The friend knew much more about Nancy's physical condition which makes me wonder if he called her and really did leave his wife in the dark.
