Hello All!

OMG XANDER!!! My heart was in my mouth! I hope he's gonna be okay. This big bad Father seems terrifying. He was throwing two slayers around with ease and killed a couple(?) of potentials too! oved seeing Faith in Sunnydale and sharing the screen with some of my faves. I feel the intensity building with this episode now building up to the end and i'm scared to say the least!

Hope you enjoy the reaction folks. Have a lovely week everyone! Thank you for the constant love & support!

Much love

Dakara x

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Reaction 7x18

Comments

I'm finally,I' slowly, catching up! I've seen Buffy a few times, but the later seasons are not as strong in my mind as the early ones. I would re-watch it on syndication, and I missed some episodes. Anyway, it means that I don't remember much about what happens to who and when it happens and am a bit like you in watching this last season. I truly don't remember what happens. It's been so long since I've seen it. Poor Buffy. She just can't catch a break. But this time she should have listened to those around her. The girls needed some real fighting, but not against something so big so soon. I'm really pissed that Zander had to lose an eye. But, the "Father" was right in what he said about Zander. I was impressed that you noticed Nathan Fillion. I'd forgotten that he was in the show. He's so young! I didn't know who he was back then, of course, but I've watched all of Castle. AND he did actually play the lead in another Whedon show. Firefly. Which, sadly, only had one season. You should watch it. I think you'd really like it. I hope to maybe be all caught up by Monday. Going to go stake out a spot at the local library and use their wifi to do some reactinos binging. Yep, still no internet at home. Ugh! Luckily I can download a bunch of stuff on Netflix and Amazon Prime to watch at home. And some reactions where that's allowed. Fun times. lol

Michele

I had no idea it was a deliberate thing for the writers to have Buffy be like the council and the potentials be irritating on purpose? was this on a commentary or something? sorry I've just never seen it that way and wonder what I've missed.

Pauline Robertson

I have been waiting for you to get to this episode. I love Nathan Fillion, because of Castle. (IDC for Fireflies though) From now until the finale, I am going to be SO excited for the next uploads. Have been busy IRL for a while now and finally upto date with Angel/Buffy.. but now I have about 70 uploads of Grimm to catch up on :-)

William Lawrence

There was also the scene early in S3e2 where Buffy finds Xander on patrol: Buffy: It's all fun and games until somebody loses an eye.

Eric Hunter

I suspect I'm in the minority, but I really don't care for Caleb. Don't get me wrong, I like Nathan Fillion and he seems to be having fun here, but I don't think the character is particularly well realised. There's a lot to like in this episode though: Faith's return, Andrew's comical recap with a cameo from Spock (!) and Xander's speech. The potentials are a bit of a problem though, they get so little personality or character development, and you can only care so much when you're struggling to remember their names.

PaulC

This episode starts out as a big deal, because of the return of Faith to Sunnydale, and ends as a big deal, with the loss of an eye by one of our principals. One of these is happier than the other. Actually, the return of Faith (to Angel, and then Buffy) is a great example of these shows doing something they don't always do: giving fans what they want, even if for no other reason but that it's cool. Faith coming back is about as cool as it gets, and scenes like her meeting Spike and reminding him about the Freaky Friday moment in season 4, is icing on that particular cake. ... "Oh, bloody hell, she's back" would be one of the moments that would make the YouTube cut, if someone was reacting to YOUR reaction. XD Anyway, she's dead now, so that cloud is lifted from the rest of the show for you. ... Now, you were saying something about Jell-O fights, mud wrestling, and wet T-shirt contests?

Koz

I'm with Bart in that this is one of my favorites. I forgot that Nathan Fillion was in this episode for some reason and I don't know why because I had watched the series Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place (1998-2000) and another certain series he starred in around the same time this episode aired. Caleb has to be one of the best villains in the show; he's creepy, super strong, and ruthless. I was so happy to get another entry of Andrew's documentary, I love them. I'm sure someone has put them all together by now and I wish I had the link. I do question it though, because he's using old footage of Faith from the actual show. 🤔 Xander's speech to the potentials with Buffy overhearing it is one of his best and it did make me well up a tiny bit. And you're right, Xander is kind of a goofball and makes mistakes, but then out of the blue hits you in the feels. What a journey he's had. Oh my God, I just talked about eye trauma in a recent reaction comment. I know this series is from 20+ years ago, but once again I seem to be speaking things into existence or at least sensing when something is coming up. I have...powers... I'd be all about a Spike/Faith thing. The look on Buffy's face when she walked in on them being cozy was a mix of jealousy and "Girl, he MY man.". I did think there would be more sparks of anger or wariness from Buffy, but nope. Much bigger things to worry about. Oh, and the euphemisms were top tier: "Like you could ride me at a gallop till my knees buckled. Squeeze me till I pop like warm champagne... It's not the kind of thing a man forgets." 🤭 I figured we'd lose some potentials, but I'm glad they didn't kill Felicia Day or Sarah Hagan. I was so immersed that I had no idea the episode was ending, and that's getting fairly regular with some of these shows. I'm all for it. Thanks Dak, really looking forward to, I assume, more Caleb!

Oh, Kristen- you have opened such a big ol' can of worms with that question! The Spike-Buffy dynamic is probably the most hotly debated in all of the Buffyverse. You are right that Buffy's attitude toward Spike often appears very confused. There is no definitive answer regarding their relationship. As you may or may not be aware, Joss Whedon did not initially plan for Spike to survive past 2x10. But the fans loved him so the writers had to figure out a way to keep him in the show and keep him relevant. Hence S4 and "the chip". There are those who argue that up until S7, Spike is a soulless vampire and could not possibly show the love and emotion he showed for Buffy (and Dawn and Joyce, for that matter). But- as Drucilla once said, "(Vampires) can love well, if not wisely". My own head canon is that in S5 and S6, though Spike is a vampire, he is unlike all other vamps in that he is the only one with a chip. This allowed him to be exposed to Buffy and the Scooby gang in a much more intimate way than any other vamp (besides Angel) and though soulless, this exposure changed him and his view of mortal humans in general. As for Buffy, she was obviously attracted to and drawn to Spike but she knew it was wrong, according to her very rigid view of "good" and "bad". Buffy has long had a very tough time accepting the concept of grey areas (see "Ted", "Consequences" and "Dead Things" for further explanation). Anyway, this is why I think Buffy has been so wishy-washy (for lack of a better description) when it comes to Spike. And now, in S7, she probably is more comfortable having feelings for him since he now has a soul- however the events of 6x19 ("Seeing Red") were so horrible and intense she cannot bring herself to be romantic with him again. At least- not yet? Hope that helps! I'd love to hear others' viewpoints!

Dawn to Xander in "Potential": Maybe that's your superpower- Seeing. Xander earlier in this episode: Go for the center- brain, heart, eyes. Everything's got eyes. And yes, Xander did wear an eye patch when he dressed as a pirate in "All the Way", Season 6's Halloween episode. The Buffy team knows how to foreshadow. Looking at this episode in a metaphorical sense, in the final battle scene at the vineyard Buffy's mind (GIles) and spirit (Willow) are absent- they are back at the Summers' house. It is no wonder her heart (Xander) is so deeply injured. Her heart, mind and spirit must be united in order to win this fight. There are so many levels on which to view this episode. In the DVD commentary, the writer (Drew Goddard) explains that this episode attempts to explore the male gaze and all the different ways that can be interpreted. He points out that almost every "chapter", or new scene, in this episode approaches the male gaze from a different direction, exploring the ways those who identify as male can objectify the female. In the first scene we see Caleb with the potential - the male viewing the female as something "dirty" and corrupting. The second scene is Xander sexually objectifying females in his dream sequence. Soon after is the scene of the female as victim, being chased, running through a graveyard (she is later revealed to be a vamp- perhaps an homage to the pilot ep of the series, refering to Darla in Welcome to the Hellmouth?). Then we see Andrew's Faith montage, viewing the female in a position of power (yet this power is also seen as problematic and subversive). This is followed by the scene of Spike and Faith, who here can be seen as the seductress, the confident sexual female. And then the scene of Caleb and The First, who is pretending to be one of Caleb's young, impressionable female followers, seduced by his position of power. Finally we arirve at the battle scene, where interestingly, a male loses an eye. Is the male gaze being punished? Are we being told the male gaze has no place in this story about female empowerment? Drew Goddard does not discuss this final scene in those terms. I wonder what others think of that scene from that viewpoint?

StephanieB

You are absolutely correct in your assessment of the writers giving Xander those ridiculous scenes then balancing it with his good qualities. I think it is there to show the scale of bad traits of men. At it's lowest is xander's dreaming but never acting on those pervy desires then there is caleb the extreme. So much sadism and misogyny cloaked in religion. The reason the potentials are irritating is a very deliberate choice by the writers. Remember that this show is all about metaphors in life and something I think you will eventually experience is your teenagers thinking they know better than you the adult. Buffy always rebelled against the council and we were always on her side. We thought it was unfair how the council would risk buffy's life to test her. We never saw from their point of view how irritating it would be to have teens complaining about everything you are trying to teach them. The potentials don't have super strength like buffy or faith or spike and they were understandably scared of a unknown threat that buffy knew nothing about before asking them to charge into. She is now the council. But they put their faith in buffy and followed her and look what happened potentials dead and now Xander is hurt bad as well. Buffy is becoming the thing she always rebelled against and this time she is on the opposite side. She expects people to follow her and is starting to treat them like weapons not people. Just like the council use to. This season is about Power just like the first said at the start of this season. Power can corrupt and leaders with too much power get careless sometimes. Caleb is a priest a position of authority that is sometimes known to abuse their power over young children and teens.

You can always rely on Xander for a rousing speech. I felt the same relief, I mean sorrow about that one particular "British" potential being killed, such a shame. Andrew is always good for a laugh and Nathan Fillion does so well playing a terrifying villain in Caleb.

Collinson

7:50 I knew it!

Was waiting for the Xander reaction and you didn’t disappoint! Pretty sure I had the exact same reaction my first view 20 years ago haha. I think that scene did SUCH a a good job of setting up the “strength battle line” (for the most part disregarding the random potentials between Spike and Faith). Caleb went through: (1) Buffy, (2) Spike, … (3) Faith, (4) Potential 1, & (5) Potential 2 so that, when he reached Xander’s head, you’re just terrified instantly. Many, many rewatches of this episode- back in the day there was a break between E17 & E18, and, new hairstyles aside, this episode just kicked in on another level. Hope you have a safe, happy, and healthy new year to come, along with everyone else. See you next year, and thank you for sharing your great reactions 🙏🏻🎉🥳

Chris Knuth

Oh no! Not that one potential slayer and the other definitely British potential slayer. So important.

Christopher weindel

I really like the Faith-Dawn interaction in this. Faith and Dawn have never actually met before this moment, and Eliza Dushku and Michelle Trachtenberg have never shared the screen as these two characters before this. But the extent to which they inhabit their characters, the emotions they put into their brief encounter - Dawn simmering with resentment and mistrust as though we spent all Season 3 watching her bond with Faith and get burned the way Buffy and the Scoobies did; Faith delighting in Dawn having grown up, as if we spent all Season 3 watching Faith get to know and impress Dawn at age 12. Because that's the Season 3 that Faith and Dawn remember, that they lived through, even though we never got to see it and it only happened in their world's collective memories, built by the monks. To be able to make that come through so palpably as their emotional history even without any actual prior screentime, that's some excellent acting - and writing. Recently I spent some time watching another show getting to know, and get attached to, a leading female character who had got married to an already-beloved main character and had his kid. She played someone who was a wholesome, heartwarming, sensitive matriarchal type. So it's strange to see the actor play the non-Rachel Bilson girl in Xander's dream sequence here. Then again, that character from that show is someone who has the kind of heart that could make me see her being in a relationship with Xander. That's the kind of guy he is; he cares about the mental and emotional wellbeing even of his fantasy subjects. Underneath his bizarre-to-behold stereotypical fantasies, he's still the heart of the group. The guy who sees everything. Or at least half of everything now.

Ed Green

Thank you for confirming that girl sleepovers are all wet t-shirts and underwear pillow fights, I long suspected this was the case.

Matt

So I'm brand new to Buffy, and new to your channel as a result. Glad I found you before the very end. One notable thing for me, I'm always confused by the way Buffy feels about Spike. She has gotten jealous a few times, and yet pushed him away so hard and told him to get on with his life in S6. I think maybe she's just as confused about this relationship as I am. I'm curious what other viewers might think of this. Thanks for the fun reactions! Looking forward to the last few episodes, and then maybe a new show.

Kristen Keys

Oh, you watch Angel, of course! I never did. I was waiting for you to be shocked at Faith's return.

Carl

Because she was with willow following a visit to Angel?

DakaraJayne

How did Dakara know Faith was in the car at the beginning of the episode?

Carl

so.... this episode is in my top list of favourites. The tention it has is amazing, and to me it really signals the builduip to the finale that every season has. Also the moment he has Xander, you realize that shit... its almost over, all bets really are off. Now... Caleb is a horrid piece of work. He's vile and awefull.... and i love him as a villain. The trap was really obvious, and not something buffy usually falls for. But she's really been antsy now for a while with everything that's happened. Combine that with Wood's words earlier, it really feels like this was Buffy's oportunity to make something happen. The chemistry between Buffy and Faith is great indeed, and gives instant season 3 flashbacks. Andrew has changed from an annoying twat in S6, to some comedy gold in s7. His recap of faith was gold indeed. One of the standout points of the episode is Xander. His speach about Buffy, but also at the end there. Where Calab says: "So you're the one that see's everything.", and then ofcourse proceeds to poke his eye out. Its very symbolic for how Xander fits in with the gang i think.
