Buffy the Vampire Slayer Reaction 7x06

Comments

A lot of things in "Buffy" are told through metaphor. This is the episode where Buffy, of her own free will, lets Spike live not just anywhere, but with Buffy's metaphorical heart -- Xander. And overall, the episode is not about RJ, of course, but about Spike metaphorically.

ThePowerDrome

Some of the lines from Buffy reminded me of Buffy bot. "She's recently evil you know"

Stephen Wray

A fun episode up to a point, and a bit of silliness before the season starts to get serious, but the scenes with Buffy throwing herself at a teenage boy are a bit ick. The main plot is basically just a rehash of 2x16 only not as good, and I don't feel like this episode has anything to add. Not my favourite TBH. 🤷‍♂️

PaulC

Always thought it was a season one throwback with Buffy sitting with Dawn, watching RJ with her sunglasses and hair😍

After the heaviness that we've experienced in Buffy over the last number of episodes, this one is catharsis for us. A fun, goofy episode that harkens back to the more innocent days of the show and just gives us a chance to laugh and sort of relive those times. It was cool seeing The Breeders again after so many years. I don't recall if they were doing a comeback at the time this aired, but they sure blew up in the early '90s. I got so sick of seeing "Cannonball" on MTV that I would change the channel, even though it was a great song and video. The same year that this episode came out they released a couple of singles and each had one of the songs featured in this Buffy episode. The one to get would be the Son of Three release. Not only was it released on vinyl (I might still have my copy), but they did a cover of the Buffy theme too. Off You, which has the song "Little Fury" (also featured in this episode), was also released on vinyl. Both were released in the UK only.

Brian Dworak

I really like this episode. To me it feels like a bit of a throwback to classic Buffy before we head into the final arc.

I always feel this episode is there to show the differences between actual love and the sort of love spike felt for buffy that isn't actually true love when he was soulless. The love they felt for RJ was self-destructive and spike did basically all those things for Buffy. He was willing to kill her enemies for her (Buffy's solution), he tried to change her into something he would like so they could be together (willow's solution), he committed crimes for her (Anya's solution) and he was willing to die for her (Dawn's solution). RJ in this episode is a parallel to buffy and his jacket i think represents the status and power of being a slayer that gets passed down very similar to the jacket through generations. Spike has always been drawn to slayers and their power.

The jacket was affecting all women (regardless of orientation). Wood's line about 'stop getting these impressionable young women to do your work for you' suggests that, as does RJ's brother's story about how he was popular when he had it but not since, and about how his parents met when his dad was wearing it. Also explains the behaviour of the women around him in the 'young Wednesday therapist' scene, and the 'kick in shin and run off' girl. I wonder if it would affect pre op trans women? Probably not, as the original spellcaster was probably shallow enough to only put the magical roofie on people they themselves were attracted to, whether those people reciprocated or not. Hence why it works on lesbians. Which also means it would work on pre op trans men. Speaking of music, that's Coldplay's 'A Warning Sign' playing as Buffy is 'seducing' RJ. Her behaviour being a warning sign of the spell, and it's from the album 'A Rush of Blood to the Head' which is what the magic is causing. 'Theme from a Summer Place' is very popular among Simpsons fans, because of a scene involving Jasper (aka the 'that's a paddlin' guy). Maybe that's why the writers like it so much.

Ed Green

Dawn poses some excellent questions to Buffy at the beginning of the episode. And instead of a clear response from Buffy, we immediately jump into the love spell. Since the way of the Buffyverse is to take seemingly normal issues and amplify them under a magical/supernatural lens, I take this as the show's way of answering Dawn's question and exposing the underlying theme of this episode: "love makes us all do crazy and unexplainable things". Does this mean that Buffy loves Spike? Not necessarily. But as she says herself, Spike now has a soul- and that seems to have changed the way she sees him- perhaps now as something worthy of love. I appreciate the very purposeful use of music in this episode- as Dak noticed, except for the scene at the Bronze, it's very un-Buffy-like and very teen romance/Dawson's Creeky. Also, Oz in "Inca Mummy Girl", when a bandmate asks what he looks for in a girl: "Well, it involves a feather boa and the theme from 'A Summer Place'". The theme from "A Summer Place" (a 1959 teen romance film) is what is played when Dawn, Buffy, Willow and Anya each see RJ in his jacket for the first time. I guess someone in the writers' room has a thing for that song... And note Dawn's red jacket in the final scene, very similar in color to RJ's jacket- she's taking her power back!

I remember when I saw this episode the first time, I didn't like it much. I just thought it was random silliness, just filler until the meat of the season started. It grew on me with repeated viewings. Dawn as a character gets a bad rap because most fans view her has a whiny brat, based on her season 6 portrayal. I don't know if that's entirely fair since she was a child that has gone through a lot: an absentee father, the death of her mother, death of her sister who came back to life, as well as the creepy crawlies that reside in Sunnydale. I do like how she has matured a bit in this season, she was making valid points in regards to Willow earlier in the season as well as this episode before she got hit with the love spell. One thing I've always wondered is if the bazooka Buffy was gonna use to kill Principal Wood was the same one she used on the Judge way back in season 2? 😂

Gabe Morales

Not a lot to unpak in this one, but all in all a very awkward and hilarious episode. This one always makes me cringe soo much. There is some insight, as you said, in the buffy and dawn conversation. The episode does have a bit of a season 1-3 feel indeed. Lookin forward for the next one :)

Bart Aansorgh

When Buffy was coming onto RJ before they kissed, it gave me Cruel Intentions vibe - especially with the little plaid skirt...

Sharon Owen

"Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered," "Something Blue," and now this episode. This is the third time Buffy's been put under a love spell. While this isn't my favorite episode of the season, it does provide us with a few good laughs. It's worth watching sometimes just to see the scene where Spike tackles Buffy in the background and takes her rocket launcher away from her (who knew she still had that?) and then she chases him around afterward. Good times. Plus we get to see Spike and Xander work together with neither of them expressing disdain for one another. Speaking of Spike, I enjoyed your analysis about him at the end. No, we don't forget the terrible things Spike did last season. But that doesn't mean we can't acknowledge that he got himself a soul afterward to become a better man. Hopefully we can move on from there.
