Buffy the Vampire Slayer Reaction 6x07

It was actually because she was hosting Saturday night live.

Caught up with the patreon after you hit OMWF on Youtube :) Now that you're musical-spoiler-safe -- have you seen Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog? It's a short 3-act musical Joss and a few other familiar faces made during the writers strike of 2007-2008.

Jeremy J Nickurak

Also an interesting fact: I recall reading somewhere that the cast put in lots of extra hours leading up to this episode, with singing and dancing rehearsals. Especially SMG. Apparently, the schedule had been so demanding for her, that's why the writers included the invisibility gun in episode 11, to give SMG a bit of a break.

Catherine Conrad

One of my favorite episodes!

I like musicals, but usually hate musical episodes of tv-series with a passion. They most often feel forced, out of place and simply uncomfortable. This one I LOVE however. Most musical episodes I’ve seen just don’t «fit» the series or plot. They’re just thrown in there for the sake of having a musical episode, and not because it actually does anything for the show. The way they did it in Buffy though, makes it feel more believeable and organic. The fact that they address the singing as a consequense of a demon’s presence instead of ignoring it as if it’s nothing (like other shows often do) makes for a great plot twist. I can watch this one again and again. Great reaction!

"Cop Rock". 1990. 11 eps. I actually kind of enjoyed it, despite the cheese factor, partly because I new and worked with one of the actresses in it.

Thom Purdy

One of my favorite episodes of Buffy! Great songs & performances, great story progression, great villain in Sweet! Benson, Head & Marsters were the best, but the others did good, too!

JoDaNa81

This episode is in my top 10 for sure. Its a fun twist on whats otherwise rather dark stuff. All the secrets are out, and Willow's face when she realizes what she did is pain. Some of those duets are amazing, though I do have to say having worked with Melodyne, i can now hear were they used autotune :D. I could listen to Giles and Tara duet all day though. They do both sing in in some other stuff, and yes thats Tara's real voice. All the secrets are out now, but the ramifications will be left for the next episodes im afraid.

Got the album on your phone yet? Learnt all the words? So glad you loved it! When this was on first on tv (in the UK) I was watching it with my friend Sally (on video from our one friend who had Sky, the tapes got passed around about 12 people!) Until this episode our tradition was to watch the new ep with wine, cheese and crackers. After this one the tradition had to change... it was watch the new ep with wine and cheese... then watch the Musical AGAIN with singing along! Such good memories <3

Jude D'Westmacott

Top tier episode! It can seem fun and frivolous on the surface, but there's a lot going on with some darker themes underneath. It's fun seeing people react to Bufy and Spike back in 4x9 because of course we all know where things are going!

SoFie also picked it up, she was really happy about the kiss but was like "What? 'I know this isn't real, but I just wanna feel'!?!? How am I supposed to take that??"

Jack

Echoing Collinson, I'm not a fan of musical episodes. However, that only applies to those that have the musical aspect without any explanation. I remember the first one was some police drama back in the '80s (question mark?😉) That's not real life. Ones like Lucifer or Buffy are different because they were compelled to sing by someone or something (in those cases God and a demon). The Supernatural episode is another one in a way as it was a high school musical about Sam and Dean. I won't list all the songs, but I have my favorites. The obvious one for me is the scene when Buffy goes to swap herself for Dawn and the group arrives. Her revealing that she had actually been in heaven and was expelled due to Willow's spell made a little drop of water roll down my cheek; Willow's reaction and that little tear in her eye made another drop of water appear on my cheek. I'll check the upstairs plumbing tomorrow. Another emotional one was Giles' song during the training scene. I said in an earlier episode comment that Giles is a father figure to Buffy, and this song proved that he feels like Buffy's father (in a way) too. Dawnie's song and ballet-type dancing is a highlight of the episode and also, Sweet is probably the weirdest demon in the series. That montage group song was another one and was made better when Dak joined in. Loved it. Finally, Anya rocking out was incredible. 🤘🏻 I had long forgotten the blatant sexual innuendo in some parts, particularly the Xander and Anya bit. "Warm in the night when I'm right in her tight...embrace!" and while looking at her chest "your firm and supple...tight embrace!" and a couple of others. I had also forgotten about the memory wipe spell Willow cast on Tara. Again, the darkness in Willow is seeping out into the real world. See, Willow? If you continue on your Dark path, you might lose Tara forever. And finally, the kiss between Buffy and Spike. I have been eagerly awaiting your reaction to this episode. You did not fail me. By the way, if you happen to rewatch, close your eyes during the songs. It's a whole different experience. Thanks Dak! And remember to watch out for bunnies and don't forget the "plete".

“Where do we go from here”..the bedroom😭😭😭😭😂

One more piece of trivia… Sarah did not want to sing. She was not comfortable with it and wanted to get someone else to sing her parts. But when she found out she would be revealing that she was in heaven, she felt it was too important to be done by someone else, so she took some singing lessons! Also you were correct about Michelle. She does have a dance background which is why she dances instead of singing.

Teresa Schultz

Oh yeah, this episode. 😉 Three things I always remember: Emma Caulfield's ability to dance in high heels; the pun about Buffy needing Tara and Anya as back-up and them becoming backup dancers; and Executive Producers David Fury and Marti Noxon playing the parts of the guy who had the mustard removed and the gal who got the parking ticket (while not wearing underwear!).

denmaroca 2

Something I always draw attention to when someone gets to this point of the series is the very important yet often missed line that Buffy sang just before the kiss. Buffy: "I know this isn't real but I just wanna feel." You hit it spot on. Buffy is in a DEEP depression and the numbness can be maddening. One YouTuber who hadn't seen the show reacted to this episode and, at that point in the episode, described her kiss with spike as a form of "self-harm" and, I gotta say, probably the most apt description I've every heard given about that act. Lovely video, as always. looking forward to the next one.

Brandon Scott

I appreciate this episode for what it is - and I respect the hell out of the cast and crew for doing a musical.. its not an easy feat by any means -- but I just never "got it"; and thats a tough spot to be in considering how beloved this episode is.

m.,

Yeah, I agree. Xander is the least magically adept, and has really bad history with it. My head canon is that he confesses to protect Dawn.

Thom Purdy

I feel this one pretty much lives up to the hype. Sometimes it gets credit it doesn't actually deserve, but that's not the show's fault. And the whole thing about Xander being responsible really doesn't seem to make a lot of sense, but screw it, they had to end it somehow. I had a pretty good feeling that you'd like this episode, and it's no surprise that you did. 🙂

Koz

Your voice was a pleasant surprise too!!! Would love to see you watch this again but with you singing along ❤️ Great episode, great reaction x

Gary Smith

Been waiting for thisssssssssssss Ahhhhh

At 42:42 you can see Amber Benson dusting herself down in the background. This is because she'd just accidentally danced into the post she's standing next to.

I think this comment is mostly filler. Ok, FFS Xander.... people DIED here. I'm not a fan of that reveal and think the why of the demon being summoned could have been handled better; but otherwise, wow... this episode is definitely top 5 for me; and likely my favourite of the series. I don't think this was the first show to ever do a musical episode, but this has been the gold standard for many years now. So many shows try and fail to pull this off. Remove the music and this was a DARK episode where so many HUGE plot elements were brought to light - but add in those catchy tunes and its just such a fun ride. It's not just songs thrown into the mix during the show; each one actively advanced the plot or relationships. Plus I always laugh at the clever dialogue throughout. This is a very rewatchable episode. I'm so glad you enjoyed this one. Where do we go from here, indeed.? Thanks again D.

John

I usually can't stand musicals, but this is done brilliantly. The excellent way the song's lyrics work for the plot is amazing. I have to say though, the songs are a bit cringy musically. The only good one for me is Mr Sweet's jazzy number. The rest don't hold up, especially when you re-watch the episode. Unfortunately, this episode started a trend among shows to have a musical episode. They always fail miserably and are never good like this one was. I know I am in the minority here as many fans has this as their favourite Buffy episode. Me, I always mute when I re-watch so I don't have to hear the songs.

Jontor11

BtVS loves to have major character plot progression in epic episodes which have an otherwise unrelated "A plot". This one is a clear example, where the A plot is the singing demon but all the drama is in the character reveals; also things like Hush (where Buffy and Riley find out about each other and, to a lesser extent, Xander and Anya reveal their true feelings and Willow and Tara meet), and Lovers Walk (where the A plot is about Spike being back in town, but there's huge plot progression in all the romantic relationships). Each of these you remember primarily for the A plot, but BtVS slips in a whole load of arc progression at the same time.

Jack

Dakara, there is a CD of these songs and they are also available I believe on the most popular music sharing services.

Chas Summers

The actors for Xander and Anya was so cute it looked like they genuinely were having fun performing that and them laughing at the end was adorable.

I have some potential insight into Dawn's shop lifting from my own experiences. It's not something I'm proud of, but I compulsively shop lifted from around the age of 11 until I was finally caught in my early 20s. Shop lifting can be a rush, and for me it was basically what drugs would eventually become; a way to block out negative emotions & life circumstances I didn't know how to deal with. I see Dawn doing the same thing, she doesn't know how to express her isolation and feelings of loneliness, so she shoplifts and for a little while it helps her feel better, to forget.

This is one episode that could’ve been disastrous. Musical episodes are hard to pull off. (Grey’s Anatomy I’m side eyeing you now.) this was pulled off tremendously. It was singing but moved the story a long. Not just the main story but all the side plots as well. Sarah, Alyson, and Nicholas won’t be winning any Grammy’s or Tony’s for their singing chops, but Tony Head, Amber, and Emma killed it. I had no idea Amber or Emma could sing like that before hand. Xander and Anya’s “I’ll Never Tell” duet was my favorite. James Marsters has a band called Ghost of the Robot, so his rock inspired song really fit.

Gabe Morales

I love how corny this ep is but like in an on purpose way with still being canon and still dealing with some deep topics. i love how they use all the cast's voices and i think no autotune or very little and they didn't need them to be singers but still i think the majority of the cast have some great voices! i wish i could hear more of michelle singing cause her high voice sounded great! Also dawn was my favourite character in buffy maybe cause i think i was around a similar age on first watch! love it!

megsyjayner

Ah yes it's the happy musical episode where Buffy attempts suicide, and Willow sexually assaults Tara by having relations with her whilst Tara is under a mind control spell and therefore unable to give informed consent. This episode is a lot darker than first appearances might suggest.

Claire Eyles

As someone else mentioned, the demon, Sweet, is played by tony award winner, Hinton Battle. Hinton Battle is a bonafide Broadway legend. As well as starting his dance training at the Jones Haywood School of Ballet, he was also granted a scholarship to the School of American Ballet where he studied under George Balanchine (if you know your ballet, yes I mean 'that'' Balanchine). In 1974 he played the role of the Scarecrow in the Broadway production of The Wiz, a role that would later be played on film by Michael Jackson. As well as being a singer and dancer, Battle is also a respected choreographer & dance instructor. Getting someone of Hinton's calibre for the role of Sweet was huge.

Claire Eyles

I've been anticipating this one for SO LONG :-) Can't wait to watch this today!

Xander and Anya song revealed the random fears they both have about marriage. Anya seems to care about mortality and growing old and being less attractive so Xander might leave her while Xander is worried about being good enough for her even though you see how proud she is to be his future wife but what is important about this is that Xander is the one who summoned the demon. He so badly wants everything to go right with the marriage that he summoned a demon. He wanted to be sure everything would work out like he said. The demon said it was summoned to help reveal their secrets while making everything happy. It did by making the songs cheerful even though the lyrics were dark and depressing lol. Xander wanted to tell Anya the fears but also make it ok to do so.

Tara song of course is meant to be ironic because she literally is under her spell but if you notice willow out of everybody doesn't have a huge song revealing her thoughts and feelings. That's in part because Alyson doesn't like singing. But I liked to put in my headcanon that she doesn't feel like she has anything to reveal because she doesn't feel she did anything wrong so the song tries to warn Tara through irony. You said you don't understand Giles thoughts but you are looking at it from buffy perspective. To him all he sees is buffy pretending to be ok routinely being the Slayer with no problems but ignoring her personal responsibilities and family and her friends problems. For example when they asked if dawn got to school ok buffy says what I think so in a very zoned out way. She assumed giles would talk to dawn even though that is not his job and she hasn't even noticed the issue dawn is having with stealing. In dawn cut short song we see all the stuff she has stolen and she says "does anyone even notice. Does anyone even care" This right there is a big sign of why she is stealing. She feels ignored by everyone especially since they won't let her be more involved and still treat her like a child. Trying to hide willow and Tara sex talk from her etc.

Christopher simeon

I apologize for the paragraphs in advance. I love when TV shows that aren't musicals have an episode that's just the cast singing but buffy's is my favorite. Each song says so much about the characters both visually and in what they say. At the start of the episode we see a quick montage of the characters. You noticed that while everyone else was moving around and getting ready buffy was the only one still in bed showing how hard just starting the day is for her. In the magic shop we see Xander and Anya looking at a wedding magazine showing that they are in the planning the wedding stage now. We see dawn trying to be involved more with the books about supernatural things but Giles taking it away and her being annoyed. Then willow and Tara looking at more spells just showing how much magic they are learning. Then buffy is not doing anything but shading in a notebook filling up the light parts with just darkness before giles snaps her out of it to do training which seems routine for her which is why she starts singing about going the motions and having lost the drive to do anything. She hides this when they ask her what she song about later. The song" what can't we face" is buffy playing the part of being the slayer the strong leader but she doesn't actually feel it. Buffy last big song is literally her attempting suicide by fire when nobody can give her a reason to live. Spike's song first line is very important to his character. "I died so many years ago but you can make me feel like it isn't so" He is talking about William the love sick poet human. Last season Spike said to buffy that he knows he is a monster but she treats him like a man. He tries to be that man. She sees the William part of the demon in spike and since the demon part of him is kept at bay because of the chip the William part gets to be more pronounced but if you noticed you can see spike songs showing both sides of him. He constantly aggressive like calling buffy a bitch or wanting her to die or saying he will kill her instead of the demon dancer then suddenly he is saying he needs to help her or that he is her slave. The William part of himself can't help try and make the woman he loves happy even though the demon part hates it so much to the point of telling her to get away. The human part of vampire is shaped by who the vampire was in life. Spike and dru still have the human parts unlike Angelus. Remember what the judge said when trying to burn him and even with vamp Willow angel said that the vamp does share aspects of the human. Vamp willow was attracted to women just like willow is now.

Christopher simeon

A few really dark things happening in this episode that can be hard to pick up behind a layer of supernatural metaphor and catchy songs (though a disclaimer that some of this can be classed as viewer interpretation). Willow goes down on Tara while she is under a memory spell, so its arguable that Tara is not really able to give consent in her right mind. It's hot and adorable but also uugh. Buffy sings "to save the day, or maybe melt away, I guess it's all the same", and then offers to go to hell in replace of Dawn. It seems Buffy still feels like this current life is hell, as she said to Spike in 6x03, so she doesn't see much difference either living or dying or going to an actual hell dimension. After pleading for "something to sing about" (something to live for) and getting no response, she seems perfectly content dancing until she burns, basically committing suicide through dance, until Spike grabs her. Lots of meaningful and powerful lyrics in this one - hard to catch it all on a first viewing though I think you did a pretty good job overall Dakara - but still possibly worth a rewatch. If only so you can sing along as Buffy suggests.

rattusprat

I'm not a fan of musicals there's only two exceptions for me The Book of Mormon and this episode Once More with Feeling. What could have ended up a huge cringe fest ended up being one of the best episodes of Buffy. It's an episode I notice more little details every time I watch it. I love how it wasn't just "Wouldn't it be funny if our characters sing and dance?" Instead the songs drive both the story and character arcs forward not just for this episode but for the whole season. Buffy just wanting to be her old self. Tara singing about being under Willows spell while literally being under her spell. Xander & Anya's fears about marriage. Spikes feelings about Buffy. Dawn feeling ignored. Giles feeling he's in Buffy's way and holding her back. Buffys big revel of being pulled out of heaven by her friends. All singing was by the cast. Anthony Stewart Head and James Marsters both have musical backgrounds. I think Amber Benson does too I know she's sung on a few shows. A few trivia bits. David Fury a writer and Producer on Buffy was the Mustard song man. Marti Noxon also a writer and Producer on Buffy was the woman singing about parking tickets. When Buffy says "Dawns in trouble must be Tuesday" it was a reference to Buffy airing on a Tuesday. The demon was played by Hinton Battle who has won three Tony awards for musical roles. During Xander and Anya's song the newspaper headline says "Mayhem Caused. Monsters certainly not involved, officials say."

Tara's reprise always makes me tear up: Wish I could trust just that it was just this once But I must do what I must I can't adjust to this disgust We're done and I just Wish I could stay
